Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me' headed for No. 1 debut on Billboard's Hot 100

Britney-SpearsImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comBillboard is projecting that Britney Spears‘ new single, “Hold It Against Me,” will likely become the 18th song to debut at No. 1 since their Hot 100 chart began keeping track in 1958. As we reported last week, “Against Me” has been getting a lot of love at radio and was immediately thrown into rotation at huge stations when it was released last Monday. It also shot up to the top spot on iTunes’ singles chart quickly.

I didn’t exactly give it the best review after I first heard it. But with a No. 1 debut imminent, the people have obviously spoken. What is it about this song you love so much, Britney fans? Do you expect “Against Me” to be No. 1 when the singles chart is released this Thursday? Let us know in the comments section.

Britney is a living legend; she’s come an incredibly long way for not having a great voice and not writing many of her songs. She is an amazing entertainer, and there is merit in that. Here’s hoping no one steals her throne, although I’m sure there’s no way for that to happen anyway.

Seriously? really? What’s up with all these spam comments? Why can’t EW tell the difference between spam and a regular comment? The only thing EW is worried about is pop up ads. I swear theres more ads then ever before.

    • Michael

Yeah, it’s not so much that this particular song is spectacular, but simply that I just love the girl, no matter what she does, really. So I’m always going to be a fan, and I feel that that’s how many of her fans are. So that’s why this new single is shooting right to #1, not because it’s her best single, but because her fans just love what she does and how she does it… at least, this one does.

  • Stacey

Because it’s a sexy song. Sure it doesn’t win any prizes for depth but it’s catchy, unique and Britney brings her quality to it that makes it very listenable and make you count the days until the video is released. She may have had better songs lyrically; but “Hold it Against Me” is just so damn catchy. And it proves that she still has it…over eleven years in the business…And still can put out #1’s.

most importantly: it’s NEW. radio has been stagnant since september, and if i hear Bruno Mars again i’m going to scream.

      • David

lol I swear I hear Bruno Mars every hour on every station.

      • PN

I think Bruno is great. He can write and perform some good melodic songs and he’s proving that he can be competitive with Britney, Katy, Keaha and other artists. I don’t get tired of hearing his music.

      • wellthen

Bruno is a good artist and singer but he’s not the best. I mean radio is really trying to turn dude into the next Michael Jackson. Bruno’s success has as much to do with his excellent songs as it does with the lack of urban rnb dudes on pop radio. It’s as if Bruno is the only ubran rnb dude that can sing that top 40 radio will let on. Neyo’s flop album and singles has created a void and Bruno is filling it. I hope that Bruno’s success reopens the door for more urban rnb dudes that can really sing on pop radio. I miss the days of singers like Tevin Campbell, groups like 112, Boyz II Men, etc…getting pop hits…sigh

      • wellthen

I would also like to add the lack of new Justin Timberlake music. Bruno really has no competition in his brand of pop music…Taio cruz, Jason Derulo, Jay Sean…none of these dudes have the songs or voice that Bruno has…Usher is excluded because he owns all, including Bruno, and has been doing this for almost 20 years and still gets mega/massive hits.

    • True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue

Yes, because Britney defines quality, talent & originality.

I’ll gladly put up with having to hear Bruno Mars every half-hour over some lame, generic, uninspired beat with vocals that don’t even sound like they came from a human.

  • Reena

waiting for Kanye to say that this is because of him…

Is this a current picture of her? Has she gone back to dark hair?

    • jj

its old from the start of 2010

  • Sloan

This song is just so fresh and different then anything on the radio…I am a huge Britney fan and am so proud of her! Happy for her successes and excited for her new album.

  • keith

I’ve listened to it a few times and still find it pretty dull. I knew it would be huge out of the gates. I could just sense people wanted a new Britney single.

She has never been one of my favorites, but I’ve really liked a few of her singles.

Glad her fans are happy, though!

    • Will

This sums up exactly how I feel. Thanks Keith.

  • Brett

It uses a variation of dubstep. The people claiming Lady GaGa “reinvented pop music”, take note.

    • SP

It’s a bangin dance track. People loved Rihanna’s “Only Girl”, Britney knows a trend and latches on. Rusko helped her on a few tracks… I’m a little scared it’s all dubstep!

      • Britney is Crazy

Britney doesn’t know sh!t!! This is all her music manager’s doing. Britney is too stupid to know what time it is much less know what is good music.

    • mscisluv

It’s hardly revolutionary, but her people are super smart to get her to jump on the dubstep bandwagon before it really reaches the US.

      • Cilla

She used dubstep in Freakshow for Blackout. And that album was recorded in 2006-07. Her friend DJ Chris Harris has said that they used to smoke weed and listen to Rusko at her house. So obviously she did it way before Rihanna or whatever.

  • emmanuel

it’s a great track, the reviewer was wrong. perhaps a little too britney in the breakdown and chorus. but the dubstep is fantastic. club banger. the structure is off, but longevity will depend on the individual components, and maybe a good remix or two. the verses don’t go anywhere but they sound awesome. the video will make the breakdown…she will make it look good, the lovely britney, america still loves her

  • Tha Phoenix

Because it’s Britney, b**ch. Surely by now you know.

    • Godloveher

      Loves it!

    • Classy

      That’s right!

  • Oliver

It’s a very catchy and fun song. Not only that but she brought dubstep into light and that is a pretty new and inventive thing to mash with her pop/dance music. Not only that but her vocals are less auto-tuned than he previous singles.

And finally, it’s BRITNEY! Everything she sings/releases sells.

    • Electronaut

Wrong. Dubstep has been around for a few years, and is the most popular style of club music, has been for the past few years. Britney, nor her producers, brought anything into the light. They only succeeded in jumping on a bandwagon. Now it will become synonymous with pop music, but its a average sounding effort. Destined to join the hundreds of generic dubstep songs already out there.

      • Classy

I sure the heck never heard of another mainstream U.S. artist using dubstep. I never even heard the term dubstep until this single dropped. None of this is to say that the technique is new, but it is quite true that Britney’s team has brought it to light and that alot more people are learning what it is now.

    • PN

I hear more of Britney’s singing on here and it isn’t as overly Autotuned as her previous singles from her last 2 albums. I think she wanted to bring more personality to the song by singing more on here.

  • Lloyd

I love her new song!! I listen to britney not in the same way I listen to Adele or Hayley Williams. It’s because her songs get my gay on and I’m swept to the dance floor dancin like theres no tomorrow. Love ya, b**ch!!

  • brrrr

I LOVE IT, this song is AMAZING

    • LOL

      You are easily amazed.

      • Jonathan

Or you’re just mean. It’s an amazing dance song; no one is saying it’s going to revolutionize the music industry, although dubstep being brought mainstream is a solid accomplishment.

  • TC

Who is that in the picture with the dark hair? Oh I won’t buy it, but you teens and tweens enjoy it.

    • Jonathan

I’m pretty sure since most of us were tweens and teens when Britney came around and got us hooked, we’re adults now. Miss Britney Spears is no longer for children. :)

  • Bradd Bradd

Her songs are brilliant. There is something special about them, almost magical. Most of them take a couple of listens to grow on you, but when they do, it’s an addiction. This song is still sick to me, and I think i have heard it well over 100 times. Unlike ‘3’ though, I hope this song can stay at number one for more then one week. But given the obsession and the fading power of ‘grenade’ and ‘fireworks’, next week is as good as hers. She is the Queen of pop–and there is absolutely no question about it (sorry gaga or beyonce)

    • PN

I think that the Katy Perry song is cooling down and Bruno Mars might still stay on top, but this is Britney’s week to take No. 1! That Britney song is still in my head, even echoes of those thumping grooves and Britney’s singing.

  • Addi

the song is amazing! its so diffrent from the other songs you hear on the radio these days! its Fresh and New :)
