Kanye West denies dissing Britney Spears on Twitter: 'Enough already!'

Kanye-West-Britney-SpearsImage Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR Photos; Albert L. Ortega/PR PhotosLast Friday, Kanye West made a joke on Twitter. It went like this: “Yo Britney, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z single is one of the best songs of all time! LOL.” Get it? Britney Spears‘ new single “Hold It Against Me” had just beaten his and Jay-Z’s “H.A.M.” for the No. 1 spot on iTunes’ download chart, so West referred back to the words he infamously uttered to Taylor Swift at the VMAs in September 2009.

This context, plus the “LOL” at the end of the since deleted tweet, made it pretty obvious that he was just kidding around. But some people somehow convinced themselves that he meant to launch actual verbal hostilities against Spears. Egads! West had no choice but to return to Twitter yesterday evening to clarify his intentions.

“Just saw that MSNBC said I tried to start a twitter war with Brittany,” West wrote in the first of a long series of tweets. “This s— takes the air out my lungs sometimes from blogs to news reports… enough already!!! All I do is focus on my work. There’s a new lie everyday… a new media spin… I never got a watch with my face on it!!! A company tried to give that to me 9 yrs ago! I’m one of the most considerate people in real life. Maybe over considerate. Over caring. Overly real. There is no astronaut training for celebrity… even though this whole life is so outer space! I was actually surprised that a record as raw as H*A*M could make it to #2 on Itunes. How can u ‘let’ someone be number one??!! That was the whole joke!!! I know intelligent people know this so bear with me. When I said the comment about Brittney I was giving her props for being #1 not dissing her at all! But stop making it seem that my aim is to hurt or down people! That’s just not my style! As pop stars we’re all in this s— together! We on the inside of the TV! If the media wants to make a story … just say I have atrocious spelling and terrible grammar… If you don’t give em a story they just make one up. I’m just trying to focus & stay creative! Keep bringing dope s— to the world!”

So, just for the record: Kanye West did not mean to diss Britney Spears last week with his self-deprecating joke. Kanye West did not actually commission a $180,000 watch bearing his own likeness. Kanye West is a good dude who means no one any harm, least of all Britney Spears. However, per his own admission, it is possible that West is unsure of how to spell Britney Spears’ first name. Also, he might or might not live inside of a television set.

Now I’m just starting to feel bad for Kanye. All he was trying to do was be funny but people take him too seriously now. I like some of his songs and think he’s a good rapper. That’s all that matters. I don’t know the guy in real life so why should I care what he does to other people as long as he doesn’t, you know, kill anyone. I think everyone should just give Kanye a break. I’m over all the Kanye bashing, how about anyone else?

I really don’t like Kanye’s attitude and his big ego, but even I took this tweet as a joke with no disrespect to Britney. I think people just like to drum up controversy where there isn’t any. Reminds of when people were making a big fuss over Faith Hill’s reaction when she lost out to Carrie Underwood when Faith was “clearly” joking!

Exactly. I wish Kanye hadn’t deleted the tweet though. The joke was funny. If you know it was a joke stand by it and just leave the tweet up there. People take stuff the wrong way let them.

I think Kanye is a douchebag as much as the next person, but he’s right in this case. Why should people wait to misconstrue anything he does when there are so many real opportunities to call him out? This is just stupid.

Who cares – Britt’s song sux.

I just think he needs to do a mental edit before he speaks and/or types because he *knows* he’s going to be scrutinized every time he does or says anything. And drunk Tweeting should be a no-no for him.

If you don’t want people reacting to your insufferably stupid tweets, then just STF UP.
    God, I hate this guy.
All you do is focus on your work? Really? Sounds like you focus a lot more on what people are saying about you. And whining when people call you an *sshole. Yet you continue to be one. STFU.

I thought the tweet was hilarious, especially leading off with the infamous “I’mma let you…” C’mon people, lighten up. (For the record, that doesn’t give him a pass for last year’s VMAs.)

    Get that promo,kanye!

A “redneck” friend of mine e-mailed me this “funny” piece. I thought it was a bit insensitive of her, but someone who is in the spotlight, such as Kanye, doesn’t help the matter, when there are impressionable young African-American boys & girls out there who look up to them and emulate what these performers say or do. I like my friend, thought I don’t agree with her, but I will not judge her sense of humor. Here goes…”A forth grade teacher in New Orleans was talking about how important it was for her students to have breakfast, and what they would like to eat. Hers was omelette, so she asked her students if they know what an omelette was & if they would put it in a sentence. A young boy raised his hand and said, ” I know what omelette is, for example, I don’t like it when Tyrone hit me just now, but omelett him get away with it this time.” It’s obvious that Britney’s people made fun of Mr. West’s grammar when they answered to his tweet. Wasn’t Kanye West’s late mother used to teach English? He sure let his mother down.

Everybody is so bad to him. It’s so sad. He’s actually not a bad guy.

Sorry Kanye, i really dont think you are considerate….if you were considerate, the Taylor reference would not be in existence. Stop telling the public that your a caring person, it does not come through in any interview i have seen u in. If you were a better person, maybe people would get your jokes. And also the reason people call the Taylor thing INFAMOUS, is because its not something you should brag about..or reference.

  • diane

He’s a bit of a nutjob. Not also did interupt Taylor Swift but he also freaked out and walked out of an interview with Matt Lautner. He probably was trying to be funny but he’s got such a bad rep that no one wants to give him the benefit of the doubt

  • mike M

    BORING! BTW: both songs suck!

    “If you were a better
person , maybe people would get your jokes.”

No, if people weren’t so thirsty for a controversy, this wouldn’t even be news. You don’t need to like Kanye to know that his joke was clearly an innocent one, and trying to make it out to be something else is just stupid. And please get over the Taylor Swift incident already , I mean for Christ’s sake, it’s not like he killed her or ruined her career! Even she has long moved on from it, why can’t everyone else move on as well.
