Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me' debuts at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 chart

As expected, Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. This isn’t the first time she’s accomplished that feat: Her 2009 smash “3″ debuted on top as well. Mariah Carey, whose “Fantasy,” “One Sweet Day,” and “Honey” all debuted at the apex, is the only other artist who shares that distinction.

Check out the rest of the top 10 list after the jump.

A spot well-earned. Britney is a living legend, and while this song obviously doesn’t have a ton of depth, the beat is insane. It’s the best mainstream dance song in a long while.

Even though Iam a Brit fan ,I have to say this song is mediocre at best ,it is one of her weakest

I like this; while I don’t necessarily agree with some of the grades, but I may adopt this method of commenting if that’s alright.

        Feel free.

The time sounds really flat for Black Eyed Peas–the other songs on their new album are FAR better that that weak song.

So happy for Britney. She truly has shown she still has it, a decade in. I hear “Hit Me Baby One More Time” on the radio a lot (mainstream radio), but let’s be honest, we won’t be hearing “Just Dance” on the radio in a decade… Well done!

Also… Can people STOP playing “Firework”? It was great at first but now I can’t drive 5 minutes without hearing it. It’s actually turning me off of Katy Perry entirely. Almost at the point where I can’t stand to hear any of her songs.

    • Bryan

Beg to differ Brett. I never hear Hit me baby. Probably Toxic or Womanizer. But Just Dance will be heard in the next decade, at least on my playlist

I’m happy for Britney, and I hope she continues to have record-breaking successes. Whatever her personal issues, her career is amazing! I admire her. She may be going through or doing whatever, but she still surpasses industry standards when it comes to her work. Cheers Brit Brit…we love you!!

she’s great! I love britney and I love the song!!!! and I’m happy to see her still on top. But people will always say that she’s “back”. Her last two cd’s, especially Blackout are some of if not the most influential pop album of the last half of the decade. Just listen to the cd and then give Ke$ha and katy perry and rihanna a listen and see how similar the beats are. Brit was the first person to feature an urban/euro dance album in ’07 and now that’s all we are hearing. Lady gaga is the only one that is taking the feel of what britney started and building on it to make it better. Now that being said I love hold it against me and I just hope it isnt the best on the cd and they are teasing us for something even better on the second single!!!

Of course she’s #1. The 9 other songs are on the charts since last year.
It surprises me the way people act like europop was discovered by Britney. That music has been the livelihood of DJs and struggling/unknown artists for decades. It’s all about the hook, the singing is secondary.
Now that A-list artists are jumping on the bandwagon, *beyonce’s voice* this is a “disas-tuh”. The least they should do is adding their personnal touch on it, to make those europop songs sound “elaborate” therefore epic. Madonna’s “Music” was elaborate, Chris Brown’s “Forever” was elaborate, Britney “Womanizer” was elaborate. But “Hold it against me” is just not. It’s just another commercial tune. I wish Britney would have done a better job, because she can.

I’m so glad Britney is back on top and hasn’t sank away to the Phillippines. With all the hoopla over Gaga in the last year, it’s good to know Britney has come back fighting to reclaim her throne. Sure, when Gaga’s new single drops, it’s likely to merit the same achievement, but for right now we have the right person showing us how to do crazy just right. Love U Britney!

  • Michael

Britney debuted at #1 but this song has zero depth and I seriously doubt it will stay there. If the new album is like the single then the album will be about as big as “Blackout.” I don’t understand why people still go nuts over her. Sure, she’s got some great tunes but she has never actually WRITTEN a hit song, she doesn’t sing live (even after 12 years) through an entire show (can’t use the excuse she dances, Gaga dances her whole shows and sings all the way through), and her albums are still chock full of AutoTune. There is no way she has the same real singing voice at 30 that she did at 17. A womans’ voice deepens with age, especially if she sings.

    • KP

People go nuts over her because she makes good pop music. I could honestly care less if she sings live; I’ve never seen her live, but I read that she puts on a good show regardless. From what I hear, she usually (excluding the Circus tour) sings along to a backing track which is not out of the ordinary. Britney wrote “Everytime” and it’s one of her most critically acclaimed singles.

  • PN

Britney’s song was the one to dethrone Bruno Mars’ song! Katy Perry was Bruno’s competition and returned to No. 1. The other songs below 5 and 10 never did for a couple of weeks. Strong start for her song! Hope that this helps her upcoming album’s sales in March! Her songs always do well in January at this time! Circus and Womanizer did that 2 years ago.

  • Britney is Crazy

Who cares? She can have all the #1 hits but at the end of the day, this moron is still unable to take care of herself. She needs a babysitter to make sure she doesn’t drive around aimlessly, lock her kids in the bathroom, get married on a whim and all the other things you know she is dying to do. Her songs all sound the same and she is too overweight to dance the way she used to and don’t even get me started on her God awful hair. She will never be the superstar she had potential of being.

    • Jonathan

All you are is a troll, and sad, misinformed one at that. Go waste your time on a comments board that embraces your kind.

    • Classy

Britney not as big a superstar as she could’ve been? How much bigger could she possibly be?!?! Oook, that last line shot any credibility u might have had.

  • PN

I finally got to hear it on the radio today after 10 to 11 days of waiting. Played it after Bruno Mars’ Grenade. The radio station was playing everybody else but this new song. Britney Spears’ song sounds good! It’s very infectious and catchy and they have the beats and synths all charged up and jacked up in this song. This song fits perfectly and sonically for Britney and nobody else! I don’t think she was trying to top her other hits songs, but just put it out to her own liking. Radio’s going to play this song for months!

  • morgen

Brittney Spears true fans will ALWAYS be here for her. We love the old & new music. She’s a true performer & chameleon which we love. Perfumes are awesome too. Just wish she was working more, some calabs maybe. You still got it girl so Ignore the Haters. Give your fans more than a crumb here & there.
