EW’s review of 2008′s Jennifer Hudson

Can’t wait! It seems like forever ago that her debut album came out, and I loved that album. With the exception of the T-Pain duet, every track grew nicely on me, and man can she sing!
I just hope it’s a thousand times better than her first album. What a giant disappointment that was. With a voice that big and bold, she shouldn’t be boring her fans with low-end r&b songs. She’s got the voice- but does she have the good sense to actually use it on an album? We’ll see. Oh, and if that Weight Watchers song is on the album, I’m so not buying it. Seriously, that has to be the most over-played commercial ever, and it made me hate that song.
Actually listened to the preview of the new song: this album with be just as disappointing as the first one. Oh well. Another big voice gone to waste.
You’re a smart man, James. And she doesn’t even write any of her own music. What a limited performer. All she is is just another generic diva who sings other people songs. There are a gazillion other girls who can do what she does.
At least she has an amazing talent and soul to her music. What about Britney, Rihanna, etc who on top of NOT writing their own music, have horrible voices? Not to mention great artists like Whitney, Frank Sinatra, Elvis etc did not write their own music. It sounds like “Davey Jones” has a limited mind.
@the truth Actually, every artist you named (including Britney and Rihanna) have some kind of writing credit under their belt. For example, Britney wrote “Everytime” which is one of her most critically-acclaimed singles.
Regarding Britney and Rihanna, having a limited voice does not equal having a horrible voice. I don’t know about Rihanna because there’s not as much raw video footage floating around, but Britney (surprisingly to some) actually has a pretty good voice. You wouldn’t know that because the record company has her record with that breathy voice she always uses.
Amazing how “someone with no talent who doesn’t even write her own songs” can not only win an Oscar, but somehow twist the minds of the common folk who don’t even have the intention of buying her records into taking the time out of their small, ordinary and unimportant little day to post how much they hate her on a message board.
Really, who is the success here and who isn’t?
Sorry Hudson fans but you knew a naysayer like me would pop up here but this amazing voice that Jennifer supposedly has never really clicked with listeners. Her first album had one minor non-hit and I’m not even sure it sold all that well. I remember she surprisingly won a grammy but I think if this album doesn’t click with listeners that ‘Dreamgirls’ buzz will have officially worn off.
While I agree with you that it’s hard to tell how well her 2nd album will do (I’m not gonna buy it, but I will check it out & maybe grab a song), I just wanna say that her first CD actually did pretty damn well. It certainly went gold, & last I heard it sold at least 750k. & that was a while ago; so by no means did it sell badly. It’s just a matter if she still has those fans.
14:57…14:58…14:59…
LMAO. I can’t believe these losers take her so seriously.
JJ: We are Jhuds true fans, and we don’t hear HATERS. Jen talent speaks for itself(Incredible and Amazing). She will be here twenty years from now still doing it her way(Timeless music). The best female vocalist in the business today hands down.
I hope she’s saving her Weight Watchers money, cuz she’s gonna need it. You can count on that.
Bruce Vain: you just make sure you got some money to put where your mouth is, because I am willing to bet you will be made out of a LIE. Now you can count on that!
OMG, I 4got she was doing those. Hilarious. Pretty bad sign when you’re already forced to do COMMERCIALS. LOL.
I agree – I don’t remember Whitney or Mariah doing commercials following their alleged “highly anticipated debut”.
Jhud is doing those commercials because she lost weight USING WW so obviously she’s going to capitalize on that, make ads for them and MAKE $$$. Duh.
She better pray to her gay-hating God that this album does well, cuz her “acting” career definitely ain’t going nowhere. I’ve seen the movies she’s been in – talk about taking a dump on the screen. She obviously won that Oscar for the yelling, er sorry, singing.
she is FORCED to do any commercials. Its a PAID endorsement like ALL celebrities have. PLUS she is starring in Winnie, the Nelson Mandela movie.
But I don’t like her voice. All power with no control and emotions. Its very strong, in your face and TOO bold. I won’t be buying the album, plus she DOESN’T WRITE. Where You At sounds EXACTLY like u think a JHUD track would sound LOL
How about you grow up, Chive Mavis? You’re nothing but a troll, and there’s a special spot in Hell for your kind.
ROFL, you’re really good 4 a laugh. I love how defensive these herbs get.
I guess 2011 is the year of real singers. Bring it on, J !
Gorgeous voice, the last album actually sold over 840,000 copies according to soundscan and has been certified gold by the RIAA.
Gold is nothing to brag about. Gold records are for over-the-hill artists with nothing left to prove, not for new artists (and I use that term loosely w/ her). She won’t last long.
STFU. You are speaking from your behind.
Sorry JJ but you knew someone with sense like me would pop up here. JHUD is here to stay. I hate to break it to you, but she isn’t even close to being done. As a Grammy and Oscar winner, she will have a long lasting career. And from the looks of it, this album is going to be HOT.
I doubt it.
You’re wrong.
Someone who is completely devoid of originality and who does not even write her own songs does not have much staying power in the biz. Sorry children, but that’s a fact.
Jhud is currently IN THE BIZ and I doubt some random internet posters are going to predict some imminent removal of Jhud from “the biz”. You people need to get over yourselves.
JJ has a point — although all the JHud freaks aren’t going to acknowledge it. The first album didn’t sell well enough to assure her an immediate splash with this one. More importantly, the debut album didn’t have any real hits, so radio and consumers won’t be eagerly anticipating the new record. It’s going to be an uphill battle. Can she do well and have a hit? Does she have talent? Yes and yes, so settle down, everyone. But is it going to be easy? Not really.
She definitely didn’t blow up like Ke$ha or Bruno Mars did with their debuts, but she had a number 1 R&B hit with Spotlight and If This Isn’t Love made the top 5 of the same chart. It’s easy to assume artists are struggling when they don’t make the Hot 100, but Jennifer did well within her specific genre. She could’ve rolled out several more successful singles if she hadn’t decided to focus on her pregnancy.
If she sticks to the music, I can see her having continued success. She won that Oscar for singing And I Am Telling You, and that’s it. I’ve seen her in the other movies. She is a horrendous actress. Ugh…
This.
it’s no wonder. she can barely speak english.
She’s such a bad actress, the Creative Workers Union of South Africa are pushing 4 a moratorium if her casting isn’t reversed in Winnie. That’s a fact. LMAO.
She can act. She showed the transformation of Eiffe. A stubborn diva who struggled in life, but eventually came out on top. If she did win that Oscar it would have been the biggest robbery since Grace Kelly won for “The Country Girl” instead of Judy Garland for “A Star is Born.”
She was basically playing herself.
I meant if she DID NOT win that Oscar.
I agree- if she hadn’t had that “moment” during Dreamgirls, she never would have even been considered.
Of course the album will do well. There’s always room for an Aretha Franklin copycat. Truly. People just eat that stuff up.
“Where You At” sounds like more of the tired same from her debut which only had about 4 stand out tracks. Jhud is most certainly talented but people still don’t know what to do with all that voice. Thing is you really can’t make it radio, which isn’t a bad thing. I thought they would realize that if they build strong songs that suit her strong voice and actually try not to cater to radio tastes, they might actually have something.
After hearing the snippet though I am not really looking forward to this anymore. But I’ll buy it on the hope that there still might be a couple of surprises in store.
At least they stopped talking that Whitney Houston mess. Jhud, as much as I like her is so Whitney.
The problem seems to be that “JHud” doesn’t know what to do with that voice.
Word.
Her voice isn’t even all that great. Her fans are pretty easily impressed. They must be in a coma or something.
Or you obviously lack taste by arguing facts. Go listen to Heidi Montag, troll.
Interesting that u mention trolls, cuz guess who looks like one. JDud’s got the kind of face u just wanna piss on. (Luv it when these losers pitch it right down the middle.)
Oh Roger Sterling, why don’t you take your hate somewhere it’s welcome. Jennifer is beautiful, inside and out. Go finish jacking off to your pictures of Courtney Love.
LOL, I love it. JDud has the face of a baboon. Oopsie, I don’t mean to be insulting…..to baboons.
LOL. I totally agree. She’s nothing you haven’t seen a million times before. She’ll totally be gone in five years (or even less).
omfg @Howard and Roger. u just made my morning. these Jdud fans take themselves so seriously. they $h!t a brick if anyone says anything remotely negative. sad and hilarious at the same time.
only group that acts as asinine are Gaga fans.
Gaga is an actual artist. Those fans are justified.
Gaga fans actually suck worse. They think she created the universe.
For the record, I think Gaga sucks.
Jennifer Hudson is wonderful. I love her voice. I hope they get a singer like her on American Idol this year.
I CANT WAIT. Please support this beautiful black woman with the gorgeous voice. REAL SINGERS are making a comeback! Please support singers such as Jennifer, Fantasia, Chrisette Michelle, Jazmine Sullivan, Faith Evans. Also KELLY PRICE album is about to drop, go cop it.
Jazmine Sullivan quit music.
@Dee I love Jennifer and I love the idea thar “Real Singers” are making a comeback. The problem is they are saddled with this auto-tune neo-soul hip/hop trash that makes them sound all the same.
I believe that these real singers are all against the autotune trend that’s so common in R&B and won’t put it on their albums. Bravo for Fantasia, Jazmine Sullivan, Chrisette Michele,my girl Faith Evans with their solid albums and even Jennifer Hudson with her upcoming March album release! They all can SING!!!!!!
I’m white and I like Chrisette, Jazmine and Faith. I don’t like the rest that much. Jennifer has a loud voice with no control and no versatility. She’s not that great of singer, and I’m tired of people overrating her.
Not sure. May have to hear the single first. Love Jennifer Hudson’s voice and she is a really good actress.
She’s not that good of an actress have you seen Sex and the City. She got lucky and was able to sing And I Am Telling You. The only reason she won that Oscar. Where was her so-called great acting in the rest of the movie.
The only reason the album didn’t go platinum is beacuse of the deaths that took place in her family (mom and nephew) all promotion was stopped. She has a fan base that is waiting and ready. Non musical infomants (HATERS) keep your day job (if you have one)#teamJHUD
Love that u went there. The only reason she’s still famous is because of those deaths. It kept her in the spotlight.
@larry u ignorant mofo she was famous before her familys death she won an Oscar 2 years before her familys sudden death.
That’s why Larry said “kept” her famous. Wow, her fans apparently don’t know how to read, either. Pathetic.
Her album did well, sold over 800,000. I wasn’t looking for it to go platinum, just sell respectably, but focus on her singing first.
I can’t wait to her her new music. She has a wondeful voice and is a sweet, genuine person.
I heard she had a real attitude with the media after she won her Oscar.
