Robyn opening for Katy Perry on summer tour

robyn-katy-perryImage Credit: Rankin; Emma SummertonRobyn will open for Katy Perry on a North American tour this summer. A Perry rep confirms that (as first reported in Billboard) the Swedish pop singer will join the California gurl on select dates during her June-August run across the continent. Welsh artist Marina & the Diamonds will also open some dates; it remains unclear exactly which acts will appear at which shows.

This is fantastic news for fans of Robyn. Her brilliant Body Talk was EW’s No. 3 album of 2010, but it still hasn’t made nearly the commercial impact it ought to. In an ideal world, she and Katy Perry would already be equally famous; if this tour helps expose Robyn to a wider cross-section of North American pop listeners, that’s an important step in the right direction. (The same goes for Marina, another European talent who deserves more attention in the States.)

For much more on why Robyn isn’t a superstar here yet — and what she’s doing to change that in 2011 — check out the story on her in this week’s EW, available at newsstands tomorrow. Until then, what do you think of this tour announcement? Would you buy tickets to see Katy Perry and Robyn on tour together?

Thought they were talking about Robin Sparkles…..

Now THAT I would pay money to see.

  • Lynny

Pretty brave on Katy’s part. From what I’ve seen I wouldn’t want to have to follow a Robyn live show.

    • BJohnson

Yeah, usually the fluff act is the opener. Love Robyn. Too bad I couldn’t just do a partial payment to catch her and leave before Katy comes out.

  • joseph t

Robyn is amazing! Glad she is getting some more press with this tour…. even if it is with Katy

  • Strepsi

Agree it’s brave of Perry — she knows artistically, she should be opening for Robyn.

Perry is a great pop songwriter, I mean I love Teenage Dream (who doesn’t?) but the problem is that Darren Criss out-sang and out-performed Perry’s version.

The other issue is that Robyn produced THREE albums of brilliant pop songs in 2010 alone. She is “indestructible”.

So YES, I would buy tickets, and leave in the intermission.

She’s so much better than Perry.

  • Dana

Good God. Katy Perry should be opening for Robyn. What is wrong with people that they buy Katy Perry’s tuneless garbage and don’t know anything about Robyn’s Body Talk. It’s a great album AND Robyn can actually sing.

  • kat

um can I have just a Robyn / marina & the diamonds tour instead?

    • Lise

      SO totally agree!!!

    • Gloria

      Dear Internet,

A Robyn and Marina tour would have been better! But I’m still happy for them.

EW!! Where is the Marina love?? Way to slightly mention her … shes an amazing artist who needs more love

Robyn’s album was head and shoulders above anything Katy Perry attempted to warble this past year. Good to get some exposure, but this is like following your better and more talented co-worker after a presentation.

One of my best friends bought us tix to see Robyn at Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 5th for Xmas, so I’m excited, especially after seeing her last summer in Philly at the Troc with Kelis. Undecided if I’ll go to the Philly show on the 3rd or just wait for NYC and not know the entire set list, but the idea of checking out Robyn opening for Katy in June here in Philly isnt completely insane but its at an arena in Philly, and not even an outside one, I’m not so sure Katy can sell out the Wells Fargo Center here, but I’d be happy for Robyn if she can!

    • Phil

And now if pop radio would just start playing “Dancing on my Own” or “Indestructible”…..

      • Jonathan

Amen! Hang With Me would be nice too. Those were three amazing songs, especially Dancing On My Own which could’ve been a huge hit given some traction.

    • David B

I’ll be at both of those shows.. I got tix for Radio City aas soon as they went on sale. I didnt know Robyn was going to be in Philly until 2 weeks ago..luckily tickets were still avaialble. I have seen her 3 times already…she blows my mind each and every time!

      • Phil

So on a completely similiar note, of why isn’t she a bigger pop star here, why didn’t EW write anything about Kylie Minogue’s tickets going on sale yesterday for 3 shows at the Hammerstein Ballroom and a much more extensive American tour for Aphrodite than last time she just played a handful of cities like NYC, Chicago and SF!? This is MAJOR NEWS, especially during the winter duldrums! I got tix for her 1st night in NYC and felt like I’m one step closer to being able to die a happy gay man as I’ve never seen her live before!! If anyone is reading this, tickets went on sale in most markets yesterday (she is playing Orlando at Hard Rock Live too) and hopefully you can still get some!

    • Lynny

I bought a ticket to see her in Austin in February. It was only 15 bucks- felt like I won the lottery!

  • Patsy

If I could purchase 1/2 price tickets to only see the Robyn segment.

  • fancypants

Ummmm……I’ll just wait until Robyn has a solo tour. There’s no way I’d pay to see Katy Perry “sing”. I wouldn’t even watch Katy for free. But Robyn is so talented and deserves much success this year.

  • Marion

I just want to go to see Robyn!!!

  • Curtis

I like Katy Perry, I think she’s pretty and knows a good hook when she hears it, but Robyn knocked it out of the park this year, Body Talk was by far the best album of 2010 (yes even better than Kanye) Fembot, Call Your Girlfriend, Don’t Tell Me What To F***ing Do, etc. have all been on rotation on my ipod for months. In a better world Katy Perry would be opening for Robyn but til then anything that exposes her music to new audiences will have to do

    • Steve

Well Put and I agree 100%!!

  • Stephanie

If Americans had any taste in pop music, Katy would be opening for Robyn and Marina. Just saying.

  • dropper

I would absolutely buy a ticket just to see Robyn. Then I would leave before Katy came caterwauling onto the stage.
