Johnny Depp talks about filming his Keith Richards documentary: 'It was intense' - EXCLUSIVE

Keith-RichardsImage Credit: Eric Charbonneau/WireImage.comEverybody knows Johnny Depp is a big fan of Keith Richards and that he based his Pirates of the Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow on the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist. But did you know he is also a keen admirer of non-fiction films? “I’m a psychotic for documentaries,” says the actor. “I adore them, you know.”

Given these two enthusiasms, it was perhaps only a matter of time before Mr. Depp got round to making a documentary about Mr. Richards, which is exactly what he is now in the process of doing.  “It’s coming along great,” says the actor of his second directing gig, after 1997’s drama, The Brave. “Any time that he’s got a minute, any time I’ve got a minute. We’ve done one, let’s say, installment that was fairly intense. We shot for a few days, and we got 35 hours of footage. That’s me and Keith sitting and talking in a room that’s very, you know, apropos of Keith. We’re sitting on couches, having a drink, and talking.”

In addition to the interview footage, the as-yet untitled film will also contain performance material featuring Richards, members of his band, the X-Pensive Winos, and famous guests. “We had Patti Smith, which was miraculous, we had Norah Jones, and I think there’s going to be a few more,” says Depp, “I think we’ve probably got two more installments [to film] and then we’ll start cutting it together.”

The documentary will be the third movie collaboration between Depp and Richards. The pair both appeared in 2007′s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and will reunite in the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. “It was perfection!” says Depp of working with Richards on the latter project, which is due out May 20.

Although the Richards documentary has no release date as yet, Depp says the film will definitely get a theatrical run of some sort. That would befit a movie which was shot by Pirates cinematographer Dariusz Wolski and which, according to Depp, looks like a “a cross between The Godfather and a painting by (famed 17th century Italian artist) Caravaggio. It’s really something to see Keith in that atmosphere.”

Lady Antebellum hits studio to record third album: Charles Kelley on trying to follow up 'Need You Now' -- EXCLUSIVE

Lady-AntebellumLady Antebellum had the second-best-selling album of 2010, thanks largely to the massive crossover title track, “Need You Now.” The country trio (Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood), who have six nominations at next month’s Grammys, headed back into the studio this week to begin recording their third album. “We were touring between the recording process the last two times we’ve done it. We actually just went ahead and decided we’re gonna take two, two and a half months straight in the studio to create this thing and not have all this distraction. Hopefully that will be a good thing,” Kelley told EW earlier this month when he interrupted a skiing trip to chat with us for our 2011 Preview issue, on stands Friday. “I always laugh and say that I thought we worked good in the chaos, and that was why it worked. We’ll see if having too much time, what that does to us. Hopefully it’s gonna make the process more enjoyable and not so stressful.”

Kelley says the group is more prepared to record this time than they’ve ever been. READ FULL STORY »

What is the greatest guitar riff of all-time?

Keith-Richards-1964Image Credit: Peter Francis/Retna Ltd.Spinner has posted an agreeably catholic-minded list of the 50 Greatest Guitar Riffs in Rock ‘n’ Roll. True, most of the usual suspects are present, from “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos to that scourge of guitar store employees, Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” However, the list also finds space for a slew of great but less obviously riff-tastic tracks, including The Smiths’ “This Charming Man,” The Meters’ “Look-ka Py Py,” and Chic’s “Le Freak.”

Etta James revealed to have leukemia and dementia

Categories: Soul

etta-jamesImage Credit: Times-Picayune/LandovA court battle over the finances and care of soul icon Etta James has revealed that the 72-year-old singer is suffering from leukemia and dementia, according to Southern California’s Press Enterprise.

The information came to light during a civil case between her husband of 41 years, Artis Mills, who is seeking financial control of her accounts, and her son Donto James, who wants that responsibility assigned to a third party.

According to her doctor, James has dementia and organic brain syndrome, and is currently being treated for leukemia. She is no longer able to sign her name or feed and dress herself, but does recognize her husband and children.

Beyonce Knowles portrayed James in the 2008 film Cadillac Records, and sang her 1961 classic “At Last” at President Obama’s inauguration the following year (an event which famously displeased James at the time).

Kelly Clarkson says new album 'supposedly' coming in March

Categories: Kelly Clarkson

Kelly-ClarksonImage Credit: Frederick Breedon/FilmMagic.comOn her Facebook page yesterday, Kelly Clarkson revealed when her latest album, May, is “supposedly” going to see the light of day. She replied to a fan’s question, “Kelly when does the new album drop?” with this response: “Supposedly March but who the heck knows haha! Just know that I am trying to get it to y’all asap!”

The exchange doesn’t currently appear on her Facebook page, but screen grabs of the banter are posted around the internet. The fact that there’s been little promotion for an album that would supposedly be out in as little as six weeks points to the fact that March is probably a little on the hopeful side, but weirder things have happened in the music industry. What’s even weirder? Why an album titled May wouldn’t be held until, you know, May in the first place. Right?

Taylor Swift's new 'Back to December' video: So cold, so very cold

back-to-decemberTaylor Lautner, your video apology has arrived. Well, you’re not in it (that would be some other, unknown actor with ridiculous cheekbones), but it’s here.

Unlike Swift’s smitten-kittens-and-happy-endings clip for previous single “Mine,” the clip for “Back to December” is fitted for a mood of melancholy and regret: Taylor in tank top and a ribbed cardigan made of sad, wandering the rooms of a sparely furnished house and mourning the love she let go, her misery manifesting as indoor snowflakes of the mind.

Meanwhile, her rejected, dejected paramour walks a wintry landscape, puffing out mouthfuls of cold air and despair. Good times! But actually, kind of lovely; watch it below: READ FULL STORY »

Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett: How should this duet shape up?

Amy-Winehouse-Tony-BennettImage Credit: Dave M. Benett/Getty ImagesCan you imagine what a mash-up of “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and “Rehab” might sound like? Well, you might not have to imagine for much longer—the disparate artists (in sound and age!) behind both hits, Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse, are apparently teaming up for a duet, likely to come later this year. Few specifics about the collaboration have emerged yet, but Winehouse is said to be a big fan of Bennett’s work. The crooner confirmed that he’s working with Winehouse, saying, “We’re working on partnering up to record a duet together, but it’s still in the works.” And Bennett’s wife, Susan Bennedetto, added that Winehouse “went to see him twice while he was performing in London.” Awww, Amy Winehouse has a crush!
