Tom Hanks' son 'Chet Haze' debuts 'White and Purple' rap song: is he any good?

Tom Hanks’ son Chester has already begun to follow in his dad’s footsteps with small roles in movies like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and as Gawker dutifully pointed out, Bratz: The Movie. Now a student at Northwestern University, he’s throwing his hat into the world of rap music. As rhymer Chet Haze, he recently put his spin on Wiz Khalifa’s hit “Black and Yellow” to shout out the Chicago-area university’s colors. The result is “White and Purple (Northwestern Remix),” a campus banger sure to have the kids going nuts at the next keg party.

Check out the song after the jump.

Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against' me breaks radio records, tops iTunes-will she perform at the Grammys, too?

Filed under: Britney Spears and tagged: , ,

hold-it-against-meOops, she did it again. Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me,” leaked Monday and officially released on Tuesday, shot straight to no. 1 on iTunes and also set a new bar for first-day radio spins, according to a statement released by her label.

Says industry analyst Kevin McCabe (via MTV), “Top-40 outlets across the country immediately put ‘Hold It Against Me’ in rotation and received instant-reaction airplay at America’s most-influential stations, including Z100 and WXRK in New York and KIIS and KAMP in Los Angeles”—not entirely an unexpected result for a new Britney single, considering her last two, “2008′s “Womanizer” and 2009′s “3,” performed similarly well, and also jumped quickly to the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Perez Hilton is also reporting today that Spears will be performing at the upcoming Grammys ceremony in Los Angeles on Feb. 13, though her rep will not confirm the news.

Is Britney Spears' new single a rip-off? The Bellamy Brothers tell EW why they think so

Bellamy-Brothers-Britney-SpearsImage Credit: Rick Diamond/Getty Images; Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos“It’s not every day you get in the middle of a Britney Spears brawl,” David Bellamy tells EW, laughing. True. But that’s where he finds himself today after taking issue with Britney Spears’ new single “Hold it Against Me,” which he feels rips off the title of the Bellamy Brothers’ 1979 No. 1 country hit, “If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold it Against Me,” which he penned. Spears’ track, produced by Max Martin and Dr. Luke, hit the Internet Monday, and Bellamy’s son called him from Nashville to tell him it was using “pretty much the same title.” READ FULL STORY »

Country singer Chely Wright on the effect of coming out: 'My record sales went directly in half'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

Chely-WrightImage Credit: Howard BragmanWhen Chely Wright came out to much hoopla and controversy last May, the country singer, natch, was promoting a memoir, a new album, and a Today show appearance — and she positively glowed about her public revelation: “Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out.” But in a new interview with website Autostraddle that was posted yesterday, things seem a little less rosy for Wright, and she blames her coming out for poor record sales: “It didn’t help my career,” she says. “My record sales went directly in half.” It’s unclear how she can say that for sure, but it’s what she believes.

Wright discussed the perception from the gay community that coming out helped her career, thanks to all the publicity. “They’re wrong,” Wright says of people who have that perception. “There’s the gay community that now knows my name and it’s a long leap from the new demographic of people who will come to my Facebook page and hit the ‘Like’ button to them buying my record and coming to live shows. It’s a big stretch from those new fans to make up for the fans I lost.” Wright explains: “If it appears from the outside in that it’s helped my career, it could be because I haven’t talked about the negative. You won’t hear me bitching and moaning on my Facebook page about the hate mail I’ve gotten.” But, apparently, you will hear her talk about it now. “My life has been threatened. I get nasty letters every day, ‘I’m through with you Chely Wright, you’re going to hell.’”

Kanye West and Jay-Z's 'H.A.M.' debuts: What do you think of the first 'Watch the Throne' single?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , ,

jay-z-and-Kanye-westImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com“H.A.M.” is here! As promised, the first single from Kanye West and Jay-Z‘s collaborative album Watch the Throne debuted online today. After months of feverish speculation, we finally have an official taste of one of 2011′s most anticipated projects. Does it live up to those sky-high expectations?

Listen at Watch the Throne‘s Facebook page and decide for yourself. After a few listens to “H.A.M.,” I’d say it’s a fierce opening statement that’s unlikely to disappoint fans of either artist. The song begins with a double-time flow from West over fizzy electro burbles and a ghostly vocal sample courtesy of hot producer Lex Luger (Rick Ross’ “B.M.F.,” Waka Flocka Flame’s “Hard in da Paint”). West is in full-on arrogant star mode, spitting slick hostilities laced with so many obscenities that I wonder how this song’s radio edit will sound. READ FULL STORY »

Kid-music star Justin Roberts talks about his Grammy nomination and why children's music is more serious than you think

Filed under: Music and tagged: , , ,

If you hear the name Justin in the same sentence as the word Grammys, chances are you’re thinking actor/producer/hilarious SNL-er Timberlake. But this year, another Justin — one even more popular to a certain diminutive set of music lovers — is poised to take home a Grammy on February 13th.  And chances are if you are a child, have a child, or live within earshot of a home where a child lives, you’ve heard and heard of Justin Roberts, a religious studies graduate student turned preschool teacher turned hilarious and heartfelt kid rocker whose album Jungle Gym is nominated alongside offerings from They Might Be Giants and Pete Seeger for “Best Album for Children” this year.

EW: Jungle Gym is your seventh album…each more beloved than the last by fans but never rewarded by the Grammy voters. What did it feel like to finally get a nod this year? READ FULL STORY »

Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me' leaks early: What do you think?

hold-it-against-me“If I said I want your body would you hold it against me?” Britney Spears asks coyly on her new single, “Hold It Against Me.” Nope. The track wasn’t supposed to hit the airwaves until tomorrow, but I’m sure that her fans streaming it on Z100′s site won’t be holding it against her, either. Max Martin and Dr. Luke, the cut’s producers, likely will be opening 2011 with another hit record. “Against Me” is classic Britney — that is to say the vocal performance is far from stellar, but it serves as a nice accessory to the duo’s thumping Euro techno groove.

Trent Reznor talks scoring David Fincher's upcoming 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo': 'This one's different'

Filed under: Movies, Music, News and tagged: ,

trent-reznor-dragon-tattooImage Credit: Michael Loccisano/Getty ImagesHe was coy when speaking to EW last month, but Trent Reznor finally revealed this weekend in a New York Times livestream conversation that he has in fact been working on the soundtrack for David Fincher’s upcoming Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation, due in theaters this December.

Reznor seems to be developing a partnership of sorts with Fincher; last year, he and co-collaborator Atticus Ross paired with the director on The Social Network; earning a Golden Globe nomination for their dense, atmospheric score.

Reznor and Ross have completed some four weeks of work on Dragon Tattoo, which Reznor says is “coming great”: “We started recording things in a different way that was all based on performance, nothing programmed. And that would be my limited skills at stringed instruments, and trying passages that we would get that and then we would process them in a way that would give us a real organic, layered feel that felt like something we’d never done before.” READ FULL STORY »
