The Notorious B.I.G.'s murder investigation 'reinvigorated'

Its been almost 13 years since the Notorious B.I.G.’s death, and the murder remains unsolved. It’s one of the most frustrating stories in hip-hop: on March 9, 1997 the rap icon (born Christopher Wallace), 24, was killed in a drive-by shooting after his album release party at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. And no one knows who did it. But today CNN is reporting that an investigation into the case has been “reinvigorated” due to some kind of new information, saying that the Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, and FBI are all involved.

Over the years, much speculation has surrounded the case. Some claim a rivalry between Wallace and slain rapper Tuac Shakur fueled the attack. Others accuse L.A. authorities of not trying hard enough to find the killer of a famous rapper, supposedly not deeming it important enough to warrant an extensive investigation. After all these years, it’s possible that the case could finally be headed toward some kind of resolution.

Do you think this case it will ever be solved? Why do you think it’s taking so long?

Britney Spears' 'Hold It Against Me,' Kanye West and Jay-Z's 'H.A.M' both come out Tuesday: Which are you most excited for?

January is usually a particularly sad month for pop music. Coming off the industry’s big-release-heavy fourth quarter, the top of the year is usually a time for new acts. This year, however, is rolling out a bit differently. Pop starlet Britney Spears is set set to drop new single “Hold It Against Me” on Jan. 11, and Kanye West and Jay-Z will debut “H.A.M,” the first single from their collaborative Watch the Throne effort, that day as well.

At this point, little is known about Kanye and Jay-Z’s collab. Kanye sort of let the cat out of the bag earlier this week, but cleared up the confusion last night by tweeting the single’s artwork and release date. With several crowns and vicious dogs barking, it’s a regal one, indeed. They’ve remained pretty tight-lipped about the record’s sound, opting not to reveal who produced it or even what the acronym stands for. On the other hand, there’s plenty of info out on Britney’s “Hold It Against Me.” As we reported last week, it was produced by hit-makers Max Martin (“DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” “Dynamite”) and Dr. Luke (“California Gurls,” “We R Who We R”). A demo with singer/songwriter Bonnie McKee’s vocals leaked yesterday. Its knocking bass is not unlike the smashes those two producers flooded the airwaves with in 2010.

Check out our poll and read what Britney had to say about her single after the jump.

Eminem attracted to 'Random Acts of Violence' but 'nothing is set in stone'

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Nine years after starring in 8 Mile, Eminem is poised to get back in front of the camera. According to Fox, the rapper is attached to play an ex-con in the crime thriller Random Acts of Violence. His character is torn between falling back into a life of crime and cooperating with the feds. David Von Ancken (Californication) is writing and attached as the director. Update: Eminem’s camp confirmed his involvement, but emphasized caution with a statement: “Eminem’s producing team, including his manager Paul Rosenberg, have been developing this project for some time. Everyone involved hopes that it comes to fruition and the film goes into production, but as of right now nothing is set in stone and there is no firm start date.”

Eminem's 'Recovery' was 2010's best-selling album: Good news or bad for the music industry?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , , ,

EminemImage Credit: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comEminem‘s Recovery was the best-selling album of 2010, according to year-end figures released by Nielsen SoundScan. Recovery sold 3.42 million copies in the U.S. between Jan. 4, 2010 and Jan. 2, 2011, easily beating runners-up like Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now (3.09 million), Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (2.96 million), and Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 (2.32 million).

Those numbers are obviously music to the ears of the labels that released those albums. But the rest of Nielsen SoundScan’s year-end report contains some less pleasing news for the industry as a whole. Album sales were down 12.7 percent in 2010, with a grand total of 326.2 million albums sold compared to 2009′s 373.9 million. That figure includes all physical formats (CDs, LPs, even cassettes), as well as digital albums sold via services like iTunes. The tally looks a little better if you also include “track equivalent albums,” which count groups of 10 track downloads as one album; using that metric, overall album sales in 2010 were down only 9.5 percent. Finally, if you count all individual digital track sales as well, plus music videos and CD singles, the percentage decline in overall music sales goes down to 2.4 percent. READ FULL STORY »

Japan bassist Mick Karn dies at age 52

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Mick-KarnImage Credit: Fin Costello/Redferns/Getty ImagesBassist Mick Karn, who co-founded the U.K. band Japan, has died following a battle with cancer. According to a message posted on the musician’s official website, Karn passed away yesterday at his home in London. He was 52.

Japan were leading lights of the so-called “New Romantic” musical movement along with Duran Duran, Visage, and Spandau Ballet. Duran Duran bassist John Taylor has posted a tribute to Karn on the band’s website in which he described seeing Japan in the late ’70s. “When I think back to that night,” he remembered, “the image that first comes to mind first is beautiful Mick, red hair and Ibanez bass, shaved eyebrows and ballet shoes, shuffling around the floor like a docile robot, playing also with great beauty and verve, punching delicate holes in the fabric of the songs; in Mick Karn’s basslines no notes were ever wasted.”

Crystal Bowersox outselling 'Idol' champ Lee DeWyze

dewyze-bowersoxImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesAmerican Idol champ Lee DeWyze might have “Sweet Serendipity,” but runner-up Crystal Bowersox has gotten her sweet revenge. The latter singer’s debut album, Farmer’s Daughter, has officially surpassed the 100,000 mark, selling 106,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan (via USA Today). That means Bowersox is outselling Idol‘s season 9 victor, DeWyze, whose Live It Up has sold 102,000 copies. This news must especially hurt the Idol winner, considering Live It Up has been available since Nov. 16, while Farmer’s Daughter hit shelves fairly recently on Dec. 14. (Not to mention the fact that DeWyze’s debut scored the lowest first-week sales out of all the other eight Idol winners.) READ FULL STORY »
