Gerry Rafferty: An appreciation of the late 'Baker Street' singer-songwriter

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: ,

Gerry-RaffertyImage Credit: Estate Of Keith Morris/Redferns/Getty Images“Baker Street” is easily the song most associated with Gerry Rafferty, who has died at the age of 63 after a long illness. Yet there was far more to the singer-songwriter than that sax-driven radio staple. In Rafferty’s long, if still sadly truncated career, he progressed from the U.K. folk circuit to worldwide rock fame. He also accrued a range of celebrity fans from Quentin Tarantino to the “Baker Street”-covering Foo Fighters.

Paramore responds to departing band member's exit statement: 'Yeah, it hurts'

Hayley-WilliamsImage Credit: Michael Buckner/WireImage.comIn music, there are quiet, no-fault divorces, and then there are splits like Paramore’s: the unpretty kind. After remaining members Hayley Williams, Jeremy Davis, and Taylor York announced the departure of brothers Josh and Zac Farro (the group’s guitarist and drummer, respectively) on Dec. 18 in a blog post littered with upbeat phrases like “We look forward to our best times, and we hope you will go there with us,” things quickly devolved.

In a lengthy screed posted to his own personal blog, Josh Farro painted a far less harmonious picture of the split, one instigated by Atlantic Records, Williams’ family, and her management controlling and misusing the band’s other members for her singular benefit. READ FULL STORY »

Rihanna gets love on Rick Ross and Drake's 'Made Men'

Rick-Ross-rihanna-drakeImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR Photos; Bob Charlotte/PR Photos (2)This morning, Miami rhymer Rick Ross debuted the Drake-featuring “Made Men,” a track he held off of his new Ashes to Ashes holiday mixtape. (Ross explained to Power 105.1′s Breakfast Club that he “just wanted to put some finishing touches on it.”)

Over a menacing beat and a thumping bass fit for a hip-hop mafioso, Ross raps about the usual: coke, “bad” (meaning good-looking) women, stacks of cash, and the luxury cars he’s purchased with them. To that end, the Boss—being the lyrical wizard he is—likened his vintage automobile to a certain Island Def Jam label mate, one of pop’s biggest acts. READ FULL STORY »

Georgia rapper Waka Flocka Flame jailed on drug, weapons charges: Depressing day for hip-hop fans continues

Waka-Flocka-FlameImage Credit: Jordin Althaus/WireImage.comWaka Flocka Flame is currently incarcerated in Henry County, Georgia, the county sherriff’s office confirms. The rapper, whose major-label debut album was released in October to positive reviews, was arrested yesterday and booked on charges including possession of marijuana (less than one ounce), possession of firearm by a convicted felon, possession of hydrocodone, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, violation of probation for driving on a suspended license, and violating Georgia’s Criminal Street Gang and Terror Prevention Act. The charges stem from a police raid on his home last month.

A preliminary hearing for those charges today set Waka Flocka Flame’s bond at $31,950. His bond has not yet been paid, but even if it is, he must remain behind bars awaiting a probation hearing on Jan. 6 (this Thursday). A rep for Waka’s label declined to comment. READ FULL STORY »

Gerry Rafferty dies at age 63

Filed under: Movies, Music, News and tagged: , , ,

Gerry-RaffertyImage Credit: Estate Of Keith Morris/Redferns/Getty ImagesSinger-songwriter Gerry Rafferty has died at the age of 63 after a long illness, according to the London Guardian. The Scottish-born Rafferty first achieved U.K. success in the ’60s with the Humblebums, a folk act which also featured the talents of Billy Connolly. In the early ’70s, he formed the band Stealers Wheel, whose single “Stuck in the Middle With You” was famously used by director Quentin Tarantino in his debut movie Reservoir Dogs. But Rafferty will be best remembered for his solo single “Baker Street,” a saxophone-driven, soft-rock classic that has been a radio staple around the world since its release in 1978.  READ FULL STORY »

Stars' favorite Beatles songs: Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Diddy, Lady Antebellum and many more reveal their picks for iTunes

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

BEATLESImage Credit: Popperfoto/Getty ImagesEveryone loves the Beatles — even postmillennial pop stars like Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. iTunes recently asked those two and 30 other present-day artists, many of whom were born long after Abbey Road, to name their favorite Beatles tunes and explain why. The results, posted today on iTunes, are a cool window into Beatles fandom among today’s young and famous.

A few notable examples: Perry picked “Happiness is a Warm Gun,” an edgy choice that instantly raised her in my estimation. Bieber chose the slightly more predictable “Let It Be,” saying that it “has taught me to accept the hard times in my life.” Ke$ha is feeling “I Want To Hold Your Hand” (“It’s what pop music should be”). Coldplay collectively digs “Something,” because “just when you thought Lennon and McCartney couldn’t get any better, Harrison comes along and writes the best song of the lot.” Lady Antebellum feel that “Across the Universe” is “probably the most melodic Beatles song.” The Roots’ ?uestlove pays savvy tribute to “Lovely Rita.” The ladies and gentleman of Diddy-Dirty Money love “Yesterday,” though I am not 100% convinced that they didn’t just say that because their own new album includes an unrelated track also called “Yesterday.” Trey Songz raves about “If I Fell” (“The harmonies are craaaazy!!”). Those jokers in the Lonely Island give top honors to “Why Don’t We Do It in the Road,” calling it “a query, repeated 15-fold, that we like to imagine ended in a beautiful, albeit likely uncomfortable, act of love.” Indeed.

The whole list is well worth reading for insight into these stars’ and others’ favorite Beatles songs. Check it out at iTunes and let us know: Whose favorite Beatles song impressed you the most?

Gucci Mane sent to psychiatric facility by judge

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

Gucci-ManeImage Credit: Ric Feld/AP ImagesA judge in the Superior Court of Georgia’s Fulton County ordered rapper Gucci Mane to a psychiatric hospital yesterday, according to court documents.

Gucci Mane was arrested in November for alleged reckless driving; the charges were soon dropped, but Gucci nonetheless faced possible revocation of his probation from a previous crime. The documents reveal that his lawyers filed a Special Plea of Mental Incompetency on Dec. 27 arguing that he is unable “to go forward and/or intelligently participate in the probation revocation hearing.” He is currently awaiting a hearing on his competency. In the meantime, the judge ordered yesterday that Gucci be transported to an Atlanta hospital identified on its website as “an 111-bed psychiatric and chemical dependency treatment facility.”

This is only the latest troubling development for Gucci Mane, who despite growing fame and critical acclaim has repeatedly run afoul of the law. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that he has been incarcerated in Fulton County “at least five times since 2005.” Gucci Mane’s label declined to comment on this story.
