Jennifer Lopez's forthcoming album 'Love?': Producer RedOne spills on the sound

Jennifer-LopezImage Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty ImagesAmerican Idol judge Jennifer Lopez’s long-gestating album Love? is currently slated for a March 29 release, and one single, the Pitbull-infused, “Lambada”-riffing “On the Floor” has already hit radio (although not the Billboard charts in the U.S….yet). So we’ve gotten a taste of what’s possibly to come, but what’s up with the rest of the forthcoming album? Lopez is reportedly using music that she recorded for the album back when it was in the works at Sony and songs that she’s newly recorded with producers Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, and RedOne. Which is interesting considering RedOne came down the red carpet at Sunday evening’s 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, where he spilled some details about what to expect when Love? drops next month. “I did  about half of the album and I am one of the executive producers with LA Reid,” Red One told EW. “The first song, ‘On The Floor,’ is already blowing up and the rest is even better. Lots of dance songs.”

The sound, as you might guess, nods to Lopez’s roots — but it’s more than that. “A little bit of the Latin flavor is infused in it,” RedOne explains, “but I would describe it more as a global sound. It is all about love and covers all emotional sides of Jennifer. She is in a good place.”

How does Lopez’s role as a new judge on American Idol fit into her new musical iteration? “Most of the album was done before she started Idol so I don’t think that will influence her sound, but I think it has probably been a great experience for her to be reminded what it is like to just be starting out and to be excited when everything is new,” RedOne offered. “She is an icon because she had a dream and a passion and then she worked really hard to attain it. But I think she was the perfect choice for a new judge. She knows what it takes to make it.” (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jen is a very fun singer. I don’t know why everyone raves about Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. Jen and Katy Perry are better performers than Brit and Gaga.

    • leah

No way! Brit is great and is far better at making pop music. KP is good I like her too. But Jen at best is mediocre. Don’t really care for any new music from her to be honest but we’ll see.

      • Jersey Jeff

        Jen has a great behind.

EW, you are incredibly too late reporting this story! And what of the Kat DeLuna controversy that followed her release of “On The Floor”? You make no mention of that little kerfuffle; it being said that she ripped off Kat’s “Party O’Clock” song and video. Having heard most of what “Love?” will consist of; I like it’s Euro-dance foundation. Songs like “Everybody’s Girl”, “Hooked On You”, and “What Is Love” are fun dance tracks, yet they really offer up nothing different from your Taio Cruz’s and Nicole Scherzinger’s of the current music scene. I feel Jennifer is desperate and had to resort to ripping others off and joining “Idol” to remain relevant. Too bad Steven Tyler comes off more memorable on a episode of A.I. than she ever will, and with the artistry to boot.

      • talent

She’s not desperate. And she watched American Idol before she became a judge. She’s always loved the show so I think the gig is perfect for her.

    • Adwina Lambert

      Retire hasbeen over-rated, over-exposed starlet!! tee-hee!

  • Jessica

Jennifer said the album is coming out in May/June. The march date is wrong. The new song is hot. i wish her luck. You don’t get much better than La Reid and Redone.

  • Michael

“On the Floor” wasn’t so bad. I think this album could hold some good dance floor hits. She just needs good comeback PR like Enrique has managed to get.

  • Bluto

J-Lo needs to go back to trying to make a decent movie, and realize that dance music has moved beyond what she’s used to churning out.

    • Jessica

She is not churning it out. Redone is. The guy that has helped make Lady Gaga the phenomenon that she is.

      • Will

Except for the whole Lady Gaga Can Actually sing thing, you know. Lopez’s “singing” career was just a vain fancy that struck her after doin Selena.

      • Jessica

A vain fancy that sold 55 million records and has had 4 US billboard number ones. That little old career lol. Don’t make me laugh. Your are obliviously clueless with your limited music knowledge.

Lady Gaga is a genius. She is my favorite singer but i like Jennifer.

      • Will

Oh, I know she sold all those albums. And I know that she had 4 # 1 hits (ALTHOUGH out of those 4 hits, only one was herself alone….all the others had a big-name rapper adding street cred and more starpower) and a couple of top ten singles. But her last THREE albums all flopped…REBIRTH, BRAVE and COMO AMA UNA MUJER. She has not had a hit single in God knows how long, her last THREE films went nowhere, and she was given the pink slip by her record company when none Right Out of The Oven and Louboutins both tanked, even though ‘Oven’ had a video already shot and they already had a big marketing strategy of an alter ego set up (LOLA)…including a website “WHO is LOLA?”
LOL Everything she’s done lately has tanked, flopped and bombed. Her music is stuck in 2002, and her “singing career”, which shone brightly but VERY shortly, is no more. She’s never toured, she’s never won any Grammys, and she’s never been regarded as a true singer, but as an actress who got into singing. And even her acting career is already has-been territory. Think about this…between 2000-2002, Lopez would have laughed at you and felt insulted if you had told her that she would end up being a judge on a TV reality Show/singing competition. But now, she knows that she needs to make her career happen again, somehow.

      • Will

Don’t forget her fiasco at some award show in which she performed “Loboutins” and she fell on her ass. Literally. And of course, the TV shows she produced all tanked and her perfume lines and clothing lines have stopped selling like in 2003. The public realized that she was just a celebrity, a star. With no real talent to back it up, and that she was more preoccupied with furthering the “J-Lo” brand name than furthering her talent or her skills. Talk about fizzling out quickly.

    • eloise

I agree with you, I don’t mind her music but she’s a more talented actress than singer, she just need the right movies like when she firt started with Uturn and Out of sight.

    • FromChicago

Hmmm….tell that to Lady Gaga who uses the same producers.

  • dconroy

hey what ever happened to the 40 is the new 30? from a few years ago? we are 10 years behind now. so she is really 30. just kidding. hey the girl still has it but “good hit” is better than this song

  • Kalie

Why doesn’t she just give up already? When was the last time she had an actual hit? She should just stick w/ dancing and acting because she’s a terrible singer.

  • jason

    Love American Idol this year…

  • Farris Flagg

It Better Do Well…OR ELSE!!!!!! She Had A Good Shot At A Comeback And A Grammy Award To Prove To Her Kids And Her Step-Kids That She Did Not Marry Marc Anthony To Make Her Look Good. She Better Take Her Musical Career Seriously Because I Don’t Think Lady Gaga Is Going Away Anytime Soon.

  • jpratm

i like the new track minus pitbull

  • B-

Jennifer releasing her CD the same day as Britney? Come on Jennifer… Love you. But when the Britney Promo Machine is on, she sells well first week… Don’t do it to yourself.

    • PN

Look, I’m all for the competition! Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez’ albums on the same date! They each put their first albums out in 1999 and their hits are still played to this day! Britney will obviously sell big her first week, but don’t be surprised if Jennifer has some strong sales too given her being a new judge on Idol. And two dance heavy albums on the same day too!

  • rocknmovies

If we don’t like it, we don’t have to buy it. I won’t buy her new CD. There are female singers like Anna Calvi, Laura Marling, PJ Harvey, Marianne Faithfull, Adele, all with recent CDs. Who needs JLO?

    • Janice

      Love you!!!

  • Ramon

No one needs Jennifer Lopez. The woman cannot sing well, only dances decently. HOrrible actress. NEXT please. Just in case u wonder, I’ve NEVER been or will be a fan of hers.

    • f**k haters

If YOU don’t need her, don’t check put her news, and next time don’t talk about the majority, cause as you see her song is smashing iTunes #1s in numerous countries, #2 in US, so you have nothing to prove. Without forgetting her other achievements through the years.

She can sing, act, dance and do everything right, that’s something that you can’t stand, cause you are simply one of the haters, and I’m not wasting my time. Everything is obvious anyway.

  • jennifer

I LOVE her and the song! I want to buy it already because I am tired of listening to it on youtube.

  • as

Wow…making the American Idol gig work….that should help sell a few albums J-Lo.

    • f**k haters

Idol did nothing for Paula. That’s just a promo as everyone needs and I’m sure she will clearly stay long to slay.

  • Deborah

We all knew the gig on Idol which would bring her to light, there would be an album coming…she only did Idol for more front and center fame to get the album out
