Katy Perry covers Rihanna, Jay-Z, Willow Smith: watch the video here

Put her on a candy-cane stool and Katy Perry can actually bring it pretty well live, haters.

Looking like a bridesmaid at Julia Goolia‘s wedding and singing like Sophie B. Hawkins with a Hova fetish, Perry tore into acoustic versions of friend (and birthday girl) Rihanna’s “Only Girl in the World,” Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin’,” and Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” at a concert in Lisbon last night.

Bonus points for bedazzled-flute karaoke, delivered via velvet pillow:

I saw Katy Perry live at a small venue in 2009 and she really does have an awesome voice and is great on the guitar. I think people hate on her because they think someone that beautiful can’t possibly be talented.

    • Jase

People don’t hate on her because she’s attractive, I think people just hate on anyone who is popular/sings pop music. According to the comments on EW most people in the entertainment industry are untalented.

WHY WON’T SHE COVER PIERCE THE VEIL

      • Odavid

WHY WON’T SHE JUST GET NAKED?

      • Tiffany

Katy has earned her rep as a bad singer from the hideous performances she has given at awards shows. She is never in tune, always pitchy and shrill. Even in recordings, like Teenage Dream, she sounds like she is going to bust a vocal chord because she pushes soooo hard. Awful, awful voice.

    • bruno

uh, i too have had the displeasure of hearing her live. she sounds like a banshee in heat half the time. not pitch, no problem!
love that she’s covering other people’s hits…must help when u only have a handful of decent songs you can’t sing.

    • anthony

funny no1 has noticed she “lip played” the flute, as evidenced by the fact that it kept going, when she had already put the flute down

      • calebJ

i thought she lipsynched the flute as well but played it again and the video freezes, then the flute stops and when it picks up again the video shows she is playing the flute so i think it is the camer phone in error, not her lipsynching.
It wouldn’t make much sense to do a flute solo if she didn’t play it. She could have played the guitar instead. besides the flute was played at the level of a high school music education, it was adequate, but not special. I thought the performance was adequate.

When I see her in concert on TV (Palladia) she gave a great performance in both the concerts they show of her.

      • calebJ

        camera phone, not camer phone:)

      • calebJ

        and apparently recorder, not flute.

      • calebJ

or maybe she did fake it. the video is out of sync with the sound but i did hear someone laughing…

      • Will

um, I think it’s pretty obvious that that part a joke. After the first set of “recorder” (a flute is different) notes she turns to the audience to say thankyou and misses her cue, then instead of trying to fake, she gives a sad, embarrassed face. She tried to pull a joke, the audience seemed to get it, the EW boards did not.

Please search YouTube for Katy attempting to sing “Firework” live, and you’ll experience the pain we all hear when she tries to sing live. The crowd completely drowns her out on “Only Girl” here, so who knows if she sounded great, but from what I can hear, she doesn’t sound great.

      • mark

totally agree. The crowd overpowers her, plus those songs are sooo easy to sing. ‘Only girl’ has like 4 notes.

      • Will

please search youtube for “thinking of you mtv unplugged” proof she can sing.

    • Tiffany

I find her voice to be incredibly shrill. Whenever she performs at awards shows, she is always pitchy. It has nothing to do with the way she looks, their are tons of gorgeous girls who can sing.

    • Adam

totally agree with you ,i love her so much got you back

  • Sam Puckett

no, she still sucks, better than Taylor Swift live, but thats not saying much

    • lefty

      and better than Rihanna live.

      • D2

Lefty, I have seen them both live, and TRUST ME, Rihanna blows Katy out of the water.

      • Tarc

Nah, I don’t trust you, D2. Perry’s voice isn’t great, but everybody beats Rhianna’s tonedeaf goat impression. *shudders*

      • ashlee

I have also seen Rihanna and Katy. Rihanna definitely had the better voice in concert. Katy is also an amazing artist, but Rihanna does have a better voice IMO.

    • Ralph

lol seen katy, rihanna and taylor live and they are nothing compare to taylor lol….she can sing and play and instrument by herself and can command a room of thousands of people….i admit, i cried during her acoustic performances.

  • PK

“You know those songs you’re tired of? Well here they are again, only even worse.” — Katy Perry

  • Jase

She sounds great on Only Girl!

  • Lee Harvey

People singing at shows is annoying. We paid to hear the singer, not you a-holes.

    • Mel

So you’re not allowed to sing along with your favorite song? Yeah right.

  • LOL

    Lee Harvey FTW!

  • BeBe

I actually liked this quite a bit!

  • Alice

    She sounds great.

  • nana

Love Katy Perry and think she sounds great! But haters ‘gon hate no matter what.

    • Tarc

Perry has to work at it, and sitting and singing improves things. But poplet need to sing and dance, and therein likes the problem. Katy seems to have great writers, she picks great songs, and she’s a heck of an entertainer. She just isn’t great at moving and singing at the same time.

  • Sonny

    Never heard of ‘em.

  • D

It was a recorder, not a flute. I was entertained.

  • craig

Um yeah, so not playing the flute, very obvious and sad …

    • calebJ

it’s a video error, not her faking it. watch it carefully. the moment she isn’t playing skips to her suddenly holding the recorder in her hand.

  • Rich

that “flute” you speak of is called a recorder. and it was kinda obvious it was fake.

    i loved this performance tho.
i admire her voice. its very unique

  • Lori R

People don’t hate on Katy Perry because she’s beautiful (which she is). They’re annoyed that she’s not growing as an artist. Her lyrics are lacking – she should pay attention to what Pink is achieving. You can’t simply put “Oh, Oh, Oh,” in every song and expect us to like it.

    • Renaton

In my opinion, “Teenage Dream” is better than anything Pink ever did.

      • Tarc

But once you take it out of the realm of once personal opinion and look at it objectively, Pink’s carreer has been pretty stellar. And, mind you, she writes her own material.

      • Lori R

Writing your own material is key. Teenage Dream is one of her better songs, but my point is she’s not growing as an artist. Pink has grown over the years and just keeps getting more mature and her writing shows it. Taylor Swift – a very young girl is even writing better and growing as an artist. I don’t think Katy sucks – I think she should be better and she’s going to blow her own career out by not evolving.

    • Joel

Really? Pink? Seriously? “What’s the Deal-io?”

      • Mel

Yeah..maybe early Pink. These days all she is cheesy repetitive songs. Can’t hide that behind “attitude”.

  • theBigE

Her medley of popular hits reminds me of what Barenaked Ladies used to do in concert. The good old days.
