Jennifer Lopez's 'On the Floor' video to debut March 3 on 'American Idol': Is J.Lo back?

JLO-IDOLImage Credit: FoxAmerican Idol judges using the TV juggernaut as a launchpad to revive their own ailing music careers isn’t a new concept—former Idol pundit Paula Abdul attempted it three years ago with her catchy-but-unable-to-catch-fire single “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow,” to little success.

And now, Jennifer Lopez is giving the strategy a go by announcing that she’ll debut the video for her new, hot-on-iTunes jam “On the Floor” on Idol‘s results show next Thursday, March 3. So far it seems that Lopez is enjoying a greater measure of success. Let’s examine.

Without question, this is a shrewd move on Jenny’s part: Her viability as a viable Top-40 artist all but evaporated back in 2005 after single “Get Right” hit No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, she’s had a number of bombs, highlighted by her 2007 album Brave. That disc sold only 650,000 copies; only managed to chart “Do It Well” at No. 36; and then was followed with a string of singles like 2009′s “Louboutins,” which failed to go anywhere. Just about a year ago, she was dropped from her label.

But now, Lopez is undeniably hot again. Her stint on Idolincluding moments where she’s broken down and cried—have humanized her. And “On the Floor”? It’s made her club-cool again. And like I said, the banger is sitting at No. 2 on iTunes, just below Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” (Personally, I have to resist hitting repeat when it pops up on my iTouch, and it really gets me going when it comes on in spin classes.)

The minds behind Idol are (of course!) all about her comeback, too: They’re currently hosting a vote on AmericanIdol.com where fans can vote for which ending of “On the Floor” they’d like to see when it debuts next week. Both endings look pretty similar, but that’s besides the point: The video looks amazing. Lopez is serving flawless realness, and it looks very expensive—both very important elements in the pop music world and to the old Lopez that everyone knew and loved.

So back to the question I posed in the headline of this post: Is Jenny from the Block back? Seems that way. But are you all embracing her as much as it appears? Sound off below, please.

    She’s having the ultimate comeback!

    • Jonathan

The song is current;y the # 2 selling single on the US Itunes charts (just behind Lady Gaga’s monster Born This Way) and it’s been # 1 on Itunes in 9 countries and top five in overall over 15 global charts.
Clearly, the public is seeing her in a new light post-American Idol. As much as people deride AI, this proves that the show can even resucitate a dying pop career.

I don’t think that the show has much to do with the success of the song, she finally got a fun track, the last 2/3 she released all sounded dated that was her problem.

      • Bungo

I think I just threw up in my mouth

    • Adwina Lambert

this starlet posing as a singer is soooo over-rated and over-exposed!! J-Ho must Go! tee-hee!!

      • MC

Immature haters like you need to focus your energy on something more productive. J-Lo is one of the most successful stars out there, get a life. :)

  • jdawg

Yes, yes, yes! Haven’t liked her this much since Selena and ‘If You Had My Love!’

  • PN

I’m looking forward to her new single and album. I liked her Brave album in 2007 better than her 2005 album and I did feel that her momentum was slipping on the later albums when the singles weren’t charting that high. I hope this new song gains traction. I think she’s that good a multimedia celebrity with these different platforms from TV to music to movies. There have been a few things she’s done that weren’t good, but most of what she’s put out is very solid.

    • Abby

      Well summarized PN.

  • cedric

    • gato

Did Rupaul ghost write this article? lol

  • kat

She never left! Don’t even try to tell me that Louboutins is not a good song. Jamming to that right now <3

    • Nicole

Yep, she just disappeared from the music charts, but her record company wass the blame for doing bad direction last few years ago, her last few songs were also good but On The Floor is much better, one of her best songs. I’m so glad she’s BACK.

  • Stephen

I guess Jenny driving past “her block” could possibly restart her music (I won’t use the term “singing”). She is no longer from the block thats for sure.

    • Nicole

This is as we see a club banger not a ballad.

      I love it so much.

    • Nicole

she’s always proud that she’s from the block, what’s wrong with this ?

  • kittykat

Well her giant ego will certainly be back and we best get out of the way.

  • Al

She’s back big time. And I’m glad for that.

  • Nicole

I love her so much, and I’m so glad she’s back, I love her singing, dancing, acting, everything about her.

And we know AI is not the reason only, it helped a bit in the US yes but she also hit #1 in 9 countries and top 10 in numerous countries that don’t even care about American Idol.

  • Maria Sakhrani

I’m not a huge fan of hers but damn if this isn’t a fun song. I blame the ubiquitous Pitbull and RedOne for this.

  • Tasha

I’m just going to go out and say this…

    I officially LOVE Jennifer Lopez!

    • jpratm

      MKAY !!!

  • jpratm

JLO is def. back lets hope the rest of the album sounds as fun as the lead single.

  • Ziggy

Jennifer’s a strong, genuine, gorgeous role model for lots of people and I think re-igniting her music career will be simple given the high profile she’s earning as a judge on Idol. She’s funny, smart, honest and so beautiful! I also love how self-deprecating she can be and the fact that she knows she’s no real singer, as she constantly talks about her experience as a “recording artist.” She’s just real. I love her.

  • bruno

kind of patheltic. way to make it about the kids jlo! you attention seeking fake moment making wh#re.

    • jared4ever

She’s rich, hot and got a song at #2. If that’s pathetic you need a new dictionary, Bruno.

    • MC

      Keep hating, you nobody!
