Rihanna sued by celeb photographer David LaChapelle over 'S&M' video

Rihanna-SM-video-LaChapelleFamed celeb photographer David LaChapelle filed a lawsuit against pop diva Rihanna on Feb. 14 in New York over the images in her sexy “S&M” music video, which was released about two weeks ago, according to Reuters. The shutterbug is claiming that what’s on screen in the candy-colored clip are “directly derived” from pictures he’s shot. LaChapelle is famous for his work, taking photos of celebrities for magazines such as Rolling Stone, GQ, and Vanity Fair. His suit claims that “the music video is directly derived from and substantially similar to the LaChapelle works.” He goes on to say that Rihanna stole eight images for the video, which copied the “composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colors, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting of his work.”

An image from Rihanna’s “S&M” video is shown here, and after the jump, you can find a similar-looking shot from a LaChapelle photo shoot, as well as the full video for “S&M.”

Esperanza Spalding: Who is the surprise Best New Artist?

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Esperanza-SpaldingImage Credit: Sandrine LeeFor Esperanza Spalding, the jazz bassist-singer named Best New Artist at Sunday’s Grammys (much to the shock of Justin Bieber fans, some of whom attacked Spalding’s Wikipedia page in protest), just being in the category was an honor. “I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination, me being a little old jazz musician and everything,” she told EW in December after the nominees were announced. ”Everybody and their mother-law started texting me and saying, ‘Oh my God!’” READ FULL STORY »

What was Grammy's biggest surprise?

eminemImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comLast night’s Grammy ceremony was full of surprising twists that enlivened the performances and had a major impact on the awards. Esperanza Spalding won for Best New Artist, upsetting box-office superstar Justin Bieber, Drake and Mumford and Sons. Arcade Fire lost to the Black Keys for Best Alternative Music Album, but then rebounded to edge Eminem for Album of the Year. Shady, who had been nominated for 10 awards, had to settle for only two trophies, for Rap Album and Rap Solo Performance. (Maybe that’s why he dropped that F-bomb during “Love the Way You Lie.”) And then there was Lady Gaga arriving in an egg, and then sporting a set of horns; Christina Aguilera nearly tumbled; and Cee-Lo’s outfit was a feathery rainbow connection. So many twists and shockers, but what would you say was the biggest? Vote below. READ FULL STORY »

Grammy Awards 2011: Backstage with Justin Bieber, Usher, Esperanza Spalding, Matthew Morrison, and many more

esparanza-spaldingImage Credit: Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesAs you might imagine, backstage at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards is a press feeding frenzy, with golden gramophone winners — and even some presenters — parading behind-the-scenes to various media outlets to take their questions and revel in the celebratory mood of the evening. The bold-faced names trek from the radio press to TV shows like Extra and — you guessed it — even us here in the print and online world. I resided backstage for the show and waited for folks like Esperanza Spalding, Usher, Justin Bieber, Train, and Matthew Morrison to come and bask with the reporters for a bit. Here’s what minute-by-minute account of what transpired:

6:15 P.M. PT: The band Train, winners for Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals for their smash single “Hey, Soul Sister,” are both the first winners of the evening and the first winners to come backstage for the evening. The first question for the group is about their surprising comeback last year with “Soul Sister.” “We’ve been through a lot, and to be here after so many years, it’s such an honor to be nominated,” says vocalist Patrick Monahan. “This was a beautiful comeback nomination. We feel we have many more albums to come that are going to be better. To have won this makes up for things that didn’t even exist.”

Surprise! Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs' wins Album of the Year Grammy: 'What the hell?'

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

As predicted by absolutely nobody, excellent Montreal indie band Arcade Fire beat favorites Eminem and Lady Antebellum for the night’s top award, the Album of the Year Grammy. First thing out of frontman Win Butler’s mouth at the podium: “What the hell?” We couldn’t agree more, but it’s the best kind of surprise, as was their bonus performance of “Ready To Start” right after their acceptance speech (which was weird; is there any way they didn’t know they were going to win given that setup?). Combine this with Esperanza Spalding’s bizarro win in the Best New Artist category and this was an amazing year for underdogs.

What do you think of Arcade Fire’s big win? Did anyone see this coming, or is it totally out of nowhere?

Katy Perry is really sparkly at Grammys

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

Katy-Perry-sings-Grammys_240.jpg Image Credit: Michael Caulfield/WireImage.com Katy Perry sparkled, quite literally, onstage for her Grammy performance. She looked gorgeous, yes, but was also covered in sparkles — a sparkly mini dress, sparkly face, sparkly eye shadow, sparkly microphone, sparkly legs — while she sat on a pretty sparkly swing. This was good news, mainly because she was singing kind-of a downer of a song that was not one of her massive hit singles. (“Not Like the Movies,” for those of you keeping track while counting the seconds before she launched into something recognizable.) To entertain us while this continued, the swing slowly rose while home-movie footage of her recent wedding to Russell Brand was projected on the curtains behind her. This was helpful to the three people left in the world who didn’t know these two got hitched.

Finally, we got to “Teenage Dream,” which is one of those songs that has so saturated the culture, it’s hard for it to make a big impact. It was a pretty straightforward performance, with lots of Valentine’s hearts and dancers in cute little red dresses. It kinda made me wish Darren Criss would suddenly appear to do his version of the song from Glee, Though maybe I felt that way just because this came on the heels of that other Glee-inspired pairing, Cee-Lo and Gwyneth.

What did you think of Katy Perry, Music Mixers? Did you like “Not Like the Movies,” or prefer her bigger hit?

Cee Lo Green joined by Gwyneth Paltrow, puppets at Grammys

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Cee-Lo-Paltrow-Grammys_510.jpg Image Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty Images) How long before Cee Lo has his own kids show? His peacock-feathered, puppet-backed performance of “Forget You” would fit right in after Yo Gabba Gabba! (as long as he avoided the song’s actual lyrics, of course). And Gwyneth Paltrow — whose tasteful black jumpsuit looked positively ridiculous set against the puppet color-explosion rainbow everywhere else — could be his sidekick, dishing out kiddie hair-care tips between storytimes.

Anyway…their performance was nuts. High point: Gwyneth dancing on top of Cee Lo’s silver-studded piano. Low point: wishing those puppets were actually Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem and this was The Muppet Show in 1978. Oh well…

Bieber and Usher relive their history for Grammy performance

Filed under: Music and tagged: , , ,

Justin Bieber and Usher teamed up for an irresistibly sweet Grammy performance, starting with the little Biebs’ 2007 audition for his mentor on video — singing “U Got It Bad.” Their banter onstage was pretty eye-rollingly sentimental: “Now it’s your time,” Usher told Bieber as he left the coiffed teen idol to perform an acoustic version of his massive hit “Baby.” What no mention of his origin-story documentary, Never Say Never 3D, in theaters now? Biebs has been promoting that thing everywhere — even the freaking Daily Show! — so I was a little shocked to see him actually singing again.

Fact was, though, he sounded great, especially on the stripped down “Baby.” His movie theme song, “Never Say Never,” was up next, and while it’s just not as beautifully pure a pop song as “Baby,” the Ninja drum corps/gymnasts really spiced it up nicely. We were also treated to yet another omnipresent tiny entity, Jaden Smith, of the Will and Jada and Willow Smiths, rapping. (And, man, were his parents proud during those reaction shots!)

Usher had to follow all of that up with his performance of his own hit “Oh My Gosh,” which was, well, pure Usher: Great dancing, rousing beats, and a nice dance bit at the end with Justin. Count this as one more way pop culture is beating every last one of us into submission: We will like Justin Bieber. Oh yes we will.

What did you think, PopWatchers? What was the best part of the Bieber-Usher performance? Bieber? Usher? The tiny Smith? Or the Ninja drummers?

Bruno Mars' Grammy performance: Proof that he can do absolutely anything?

Filed under: Music, News and tagged:

Bruno-Mars-GrammysHe sings! He dances! He writes massive No. 1 hits for himself and seemingly every other artist on the planet! He (did everyone but me already know this?) plays the drums! At this point, it’s no surprise that Bruno Mars can put on a good show, but his Grammy performance — which also featured B.o.B and Janelle Monae — was a total blast. First the trio attempted a strings-backed take on B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” (Mars wrote and sings the hook for the tune), which sounded decent, if a little shaky. But then Mars launched into a revamped, classic-soul take on his No. 1 hit “Grenade,” and as the cameras clicked over to black and white the performance came alive, with Mars showing off his sweet, touch-of-grit voice. Then it was Monae’s turn, and while her typically manic performance of “Cold War” was fun (though really, Janelle: crowd surfing in 2011?), Mars kept snagging the camera with his surprisingly slick drumming performance, which managed to be both technically adept and entertaining to watch.

So what do you think? Could Mars be the most all-around talented new pop star out there? Or is he just okay?
