Today in Covers: Katy Perry does Gaga's 'Born This Way,' and Selena Gomez does Jessie J's 'Price Tag'

Covering songs is fun! And singers love to do it! Just see the recent spate of covers, with pop stars taking on the songs of other pop stars.

On Sunday night at a concert in in Houston, Disney princess Selena Gomez made her love for rising poptress Jessie J apparent with a stirring performance of “Price Tag,” while yesterday, Katy Perry did the same thing with current Lady Gaga anthem “Born This Way.” (Note the screams as she uttered the opening line, “My mama told me when I was young / that we were already superstars.” This crowd loves Gaga!)

The criticism I’ve heard of both covers doesn’t have anything to do with how Selena or Katy performed the songs, but rather that they performed them at all. Is it a bit early for one pop star to be covering other pop stars’ songs that are currently on the charts?

I don’t know what the protocol is, but I get why that would seem a little egregious: Basically, these covers could be seen as plays for attention. Like, are your own songs—or even older songs by other artists—not enough to generate the buzz you desire? Regardless of that line of thinking, I still rather enjoyed both covers, especially Katy’s acoustic take on “Born This Way.” Watch them both here:

Selena Gomez takes on Jessie J’s “Price Tag”:

Katy Perry takes on Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way”:

Do you like one better than the other? Have you seen either live in concert? Is it too early to be covering these songs?

Lady Gaga = Queen Of Pop

    • Lindsey

I think it is a compliment to do a cover of another artist’s songs. It means that you like what they wrote. Society is always trying to pit female artists against each other, and I think it is great when they are nice to each other.

      • jase

true but perry pit herself against gaga when she criticized the alejandro video

    • Nick T

Yeah, that sounded great. I’m liking the song more and more.

      • Lesley

She is amazing and NYCMatch.net was perfect

  • UGH

Hmph. Wasn’t Perry trashing Gaga a few months ago about one of her videos or something?

    • KC

Yeah, she must know that everyone’s tired of her own music being overplayed so she had to sing something more current.

      • Danielle

Speak for yourself KC! Katy Perry has sent three songs from “Teenage Dream” to #1 and her new single “E.T.” is climbing the charts as well.

      • KC

Horribly annoying songs I might add…

      • jase

so that doesnt mean anything california gurls, teenage dreams, firework, and ET are all poorly written and produce songs and katy perry has nothing good to offer
teenagers only like katy perry because they dont know what real music is
even though i dont agree with everything gaga does, she is a much better singer and musician than katy perry

I actually really enjoyed Katy Perry’s rendition of Born This Way. I like that it was acoustic and she sounded good singing it.

  • HaHa

    Selena Gomez playing a rodeo.

    • Leithen

Um, the Houston Rodeo’s a pretty massive event. Last year, 2.2 million people attended. Beyonce’s played at it several years. Elvis played it. Janet Jackson, Keith Urban, and Tim McGraw are playing it THIS year.

      • HaHa

She’s playing a rodeo! *wipes eyes*

Actually, artists covering other people’s songs (new or old) was commonplace in the 50’s and 60’s. In fact, various artists used to cut the SAME track and let the listeners choice their favorites! Perry’s voice is much better when she’s not moving around.

  • anya

Wow Katy sounded really good singing Born This Way. And I don’t see anything wrong with them covering those songs. They’re just singing a song they like by someone else, not trying to leech onto someone elses spotlight.

    • Ethan

No doubt Lady Gaga loved it too. We forget sometimes that folk and soul music had a long tradition of everyone covering each other’s songs. When artists bring a different personality to a song like this, it shows the strength of the song and the performer. It’s only when artists rip each other’s songs off that it becomes a problem.

  • katie

selena gomez ruined a perfectly good some

  • ben

yeah! This is my boyfriend’s video! Thanks (from France) EW :)

  • meg

This is not really anything new. Hendrix did a cover of Sgt Pepper not long after that came out. I do not think there is really a problem with it. Now Katey Perry’s “singing” on the other hand…

    • Jean Genie

Said it so I didn’t have to, Meg – thanks! I also thought I heard Katy hated Gaga’s guts. Then again, maybe Katy’s still jealous of her?

  • jasmine

i’m going to see katy perry in concert in june, and i can’t wait! i think she did a good job doing lady gaga

  • MR.cAcA

katy is much better than mr.ugly gaga sucks!

    • jase

see you are probably a teenager that only likes music based on what the singer looks like
your superficial view on music is sad
if gaga sucks then why is she singing born this way

  • True Blue

Wait… the one time I think Katy sounds like crap singing a song, that’s when everyone says she’s good? Am I missing something here?

  • Ethan

She sounded terrific, I loved that! It also indicates how good the song actually it is.

  • cheeky

I like Gagas version of BTW better bt i like Katy Perry bettr as a person

    • jase

gaga is a nicer more down to earth person if u compare their interviews you will see
the misconception about gaga is her personality – yes she may wear clothing people dont understand but she seems like a nicer person than katy perry

  • Irwin

It’s an honor to do one’s song, but it’s been out less than a month. Oh, well. Katy’s good, but LG is soooooo incredible. I can’t wait till 3/28 at Staples. Go Little Monsters, paws up!
