After seven years of cultivating the careers of Island Def Jam superstars like Rihanna, Kanye West, and Justin Bieber, Island Def Jam Chairman L.A. Reid resigned this morning. In a letter to his staff, Reid explains that he’s “always thrived on growth and the next great challenge, and I look forward with much enthusiasm to what the future holds.” This seemingly sets the table for the record executive to join Simon Cowell as a judge on the new singing competition series The X Factor.

To my Island Def Jam family:
After much consideration, I have decided to leave my position as
Chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group.
I have always thrived on growth and the next great challenge, and I
look forward with much enthusiasm to what the future holds.
I am extremely proud of our beautiful roster and all we have
accomplished in my seven years with IDJ. We continue to have
incredible success together with today’s most phenomenal superstars –
Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Bon Jovi, Jennifer
Lopez, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, The Killers, The-Dream, Chrisette Michele,
Jeezy and Ludacris to name a few.
I want to thank all of you for your amazing contributions.

Pink is on LaFace/Arista, which are Sony labels. So yes, he signed her, but not to Island/DefJam. He’s only been there seven years; Pink arrived earlier than that.

L.A. Reid is going straight to Sony. I believe they have a chair waiting for him.
Again with Sony, he really should be careful after the way he butchered Arista records back in the 2000-2005 after Clive Davis said goodbye.
He is headed to Sony to take over RCA/Jive Label Group
Good – maybe Jive wont be such a meat grinder anymore and they’ll actually cultivate the artists they sign.
I read he was going to be a judge on Simon Cowell’s show the American version of The X Factor.

The only reason people even know the name “L.A. Reid” is because of Babyface. Period. L.A. has made a career off of riding the coattails of others, essentially stealing money (hence, the reason Face left), getting lucky on occasion, and running up huge debt for labels. Period.
