New York Dolls at the Bowery Ballroom: Still fabulous after 40 years

New-York-Dolls

While most of the music-loving world has descended upon the indie music mecca of SXSW in Austin, Tx., some of us poor souls are stuck tooling around in boring ole New York. What’s there to do in this city, anyway?

The answer to that was easy last night: see the New York Dolls. Even 38 years after their debut – which is still the most convincing argument that rock is best played loud, fast and in drag – the New York Dolls own the stage like they invented modern rock. Which isn’t that far from the truth anyway. READ FULL STORY »

The Strokes bring new album, crowds, fireworks to SXSW

The-Strokes

“Hey man, Merry Christmas,” Julian Casablancas called from Austin’s Auditorium Shores stage.

And it might as well have been a holiday for fans of the Strokes, which performed a free show Thursday night during the SXSW music festival, playing their classic hits plus songs from the band’s divisive new album, Angles.

The show drew an estimated 20,000 people, filling to capacity the typically tranquil lakeside venue. Outside, angry shut-outs got rowdy and attempted to pull down the Shores fence before police stepped in (there is nothing more meager than indie-rock fans attempting to riot). READ FULL STORY »

Jennifer Lopez's latest dance track 'Invading My Mind' leaks: Listen here

JLO-IDOL

By now, you’ve probably run your iPod dead by having Jennifer Lopez’s hot single “On the Floor” on near-constant repeat. (I know I have!) And you’ve no doubt been wondering: When are we getting more new J.Lo? (Again, I know I have!) And the answer is: right now! You didn’t think her PR machine would really let her huge American Idol TV platform go to waste with just one measly single, right? Right!

“Invading My Mind,” apparently the latest song from Jennifer Lopez’s forthcoming album Love?, has leaked onto the internets, and shocker: It’s real dancy and frenetic! Between “On the Floor” and this new “Invading My Mind,” she’s really made a glittery return to her extreme club/“Waiting for Tonight” roots. Sure, “Mind” may be shallower than the kiddie pool, but this one is up from the first second…and never goes down. Yes! Take a listen to a leak here: READ FULL STORY »

Rapper Lil Wayne has set May 16 as the release date for Tha Carter IV, his much-anticipated first album since his release from an eight-month stint at Rikers Island prison in November, according to MTV.  “Tha Carter IV is done,” Wayne told MTV. “All they need to do is tell Tez [i.e. manager Cortez Bryant] to stop sitting on it. Tez, stop sitting on Tha Carter IV and put the album out.”

Lil Wayne’s longtime manager Bryant confirmed the release date. “May 16, believe that,” Wayne said. “It can come out tomorrow ’cause I’m so finished… Tha Carter IV will be dropping May 16. If you’re not doing anything, do me.”

Excited that you’ve only got two months to wait until you get a little more Lil Wayne? Sound off below!

Black Eyed Peas' new 'Just Can't Get Enough' video, set in Tokyo: Watch it here

Categories: Black Eyed Peas

Less than a week after the tragic and devastating events in Japan, the country’s capital is showcased in the video for the Black Eyed Peas’ latest single, “Just Can’t Get Enough.” The video opens with the message, “This video was filmed in Japan one week before the earthquake and tsunami. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people of Japan. We love you.”

Vignettes of Tokyo nightlife are the video’s bread and butter: neon-lit high rises, young club-goers snapping photos with mobile phones, and the city’s sprawling and developed rail system. The song itself is a slight departure from the Peas’ uptempo dance-pop, and all four members (Fergie, will.i.am, Apl, and Taboo) are spotlighted with their own verses.

In defense of Duran Duran: New wave icons launch world tour at SXSW

“You’re going to Duran Duran?” my esteemed music critic friend said, appalled and yet also thrilled for the opportunity to mock me. “What are you hoping to hear? ‘The Reflex’? ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’?”

Um … well, actually … yes. And I wouldn’t mind “Planet Earth,” “Rio” and “New Moon on Monday” either. So there. READ FULL STORY »

SXSW: UK buzz band the Vaccines inoculate Texas

The-Vaccines

They’re from the UK and they’re called the Vaccines; they play high-energy, vintage Brit, punk-tinged songs. When they take the Club De Ville stage at SXSW, you expect the lead singer to come out looking like death warmed over—some Sid Vicious-meets-Alex Turner rocker in a T-shirt that was last washed during Margaret Thatcher’s administration.

Instead, The Vaccines are fronted by Justin Young, who looks a bit like Luke Wilson and wears a polite button-down print shirt. Thankfully, none of that mattered once the band started up with a strong and cohesive performance (impressive, considering the band only formed last year). READ FULL STORY »

The mtvU Woodie Awards: On the scene with Wiz Khalifa, scene stealers Odd Future, Matt & Kim and more

An awards show befitting the brief attention spans of its young viewers, the eighth annual mtvU Woodies packed a half-dozen prizes and performances apiece into one frantic, tightly choreographed hour in its first year at Austin’s South By Southwest music festival.

The show, which largely honors college rock and rising hip hop artists, gave its top wood block of the night to Wiz Khalifa, presented to him by the previous year’s winners and spontaneous street nudists Matt & Kim.

And while the “Black and Yellow” rapper received many of the loudest cheers of the night, both for his performance (of that hit and “Roll Up”) and award acceptance, the hour belonged to meteoric hip-hop crew Odd Future, whose pranks and general berserk-itude — their gonzo performance of “Yonkers” and “Sandwitches” included but was not limited to roaming midgets, high-arc crowd-diving, plushie costumes, and a hauled-away-by-bouncers stage exit — owned the evening.

MTV brings back '120 Minutes' -- my inner Goth is weeping tears of joy

matt-pinfield

Break out the eyeliner and your battered Siouxsie and the Banshees vinyl, because MTV’s two-hour tribute to all things angsty and indie is coming back both onscreen and online — with beloved host Matt Pinfield attached! Original episodes of 120 Minutes will begin airing monthly on MTV2 later this year, and starting March 18, fans of alt-rock can check out a weekly web show, 120 Seconds, on mtvhive.com. I’ve gotta tell you, folks, this announcement pushes all my nostalgia buttons — I can’t count how many hours of my youth were spent holed up in the rec room in the wee hours of the morning brooding and writing terrible poetry about my adolescent pain while steeping in the fabulous mope rock sounds of New Order, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and The Smiths. If you’re as excited about the 120 Minutes revival as I am, celebrate with a little “This Charming Man” after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
