Foo Fighters recently unveiled the documentary Back and Forth at South By Southwest, and though it met with general acclaim, one person isn’t a fan: Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins.
“I wish we wouldn’t put that f—ing movie out,” said Hawkins to NME of the film, which openly chronicles his battles with drug addiction and the band’s brushes with near-dissolution. “I’m not really comfortable with the public sort of openness.”
Take a look at the trailer:
Turning the camera on yourself is always a dangerous concept for a band; Metallica ran into just such a problem a few years back when they released Some Kind of Monster, an unflinching look inside the recording of their 2003 album St. Anger that saw them coping with James Hetfield’s alcoholism, Jason Newsted’s exit and Lars Ulrich’s general personality. The Flaming Lips also dealt with some harsh reality in their otherwise feel-good flick The Fearless Freaks, mostly due to the drug use of lead guitarist Steven Drozd.
Still, even Hawkins recognizes that a movie about a band getting along probably wouldn’t find much of an audience. “We almost broke up and I almost died and all those crazy things have happened,” he said. “And that’s what people want. If they’re gonna watch a f—ing movie about you they don’t just want some guys sitting around and going, ‘Ooh, it was really great and then we were all so happy and then we played this show and things just got better and we made lot of money.’ That would be boring and unrealistic.”
Though as frontman Dave Grohl points out, perhaps the most unrealistic concept introduced in the movie is the fact that a band called Foo Fighters has become one of the biggest rock acts in the world.
What do you think, Foos fansâwill you be seeking out the movie, or content to stick with the band’s new Wasting Light?

Foo Fighters preview new album at SXSW (yes, it rocks)

Can’t wait to see this, and I am VERY excited about their upcoming show in Tulsa!
BOOO Foo Fighters- I used to like them ok until they faked everyone in Charlotte out on Twitter and said they were going to play a surprise set a local bar, and we waited for a couple hours only for an old white limo with “ff” to pull out and some promoters jumped out and said they would play the new cd inside- LAME.
We should’ve at least gotten the movie in Charlotte…..I mean, Winston-Salem and Hickory got the FF movie, but Charlotte DIDN’T?? At the FF last show in Charlotte, the crowd was not as loud or rowdy or appreciative as they (probably) should have been and I think they punished us all for it!!! My other half and I were there for the show and yeah, we’re uhhh…a bit on the “mature” side but the crowd just wasn’t as loud or nearly as big as what they’re used to. (maybe, possibly…i don’t know!)
I LOVE Dave and the Foo Fighters and I hope they give us another chance to show them the Charlotte love!
I WILL buy this if/when it comes out on dvd……as I do with Everything Foo-related.
I saw the movie at a special showing on Tuesday night, its an awesome movie, although people who are complaining of a bit of huckster-ism with this new CD are probably right, the movie was supposed to be followed by a live 3D performance…..which it was. Of course, the performance was the band playing their new CD in their living room (literally). It was kinda cool I guess, but not what anyone was expecting. I wouldnt get bent out of shape about not getting the movie, Philly and Maryland didnt get a single showing. As far as the Charlotte crowd, the most recent Philly show’s crowd 2 years ago was VERY dead for a Philly crowd. I think with the economy, everyone was kind of down and didnt feel like partying. The last shows at the Spectrum with Pearl Jam were the same way, kinda surprisingly dead.
Its on tomorrow (Friday April 8th) on VH1 at 9ET
thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!! That’s great news!!!!
Okay, first off:The white limo tour is separate from the Foos. It was only parked in front of their secret LA shows. Then It parted ways and is on it’s own promo tour. There are two different twitter accounts for the band & for the limo tour. It was clear from the beginning that Dave & Co. Wouldnt always be with the limo.
cheers fellow foo fans!
Secod, For those of you, like me and my husband who went to see Back & Forth, there is an email address on Cinedigm’s (the company that did the live feed) Facebook where you can email them an let them know you didn’t get to see the movie. They are doing a free repeat of the film on April 14th. The FF message boards are full of info!
P.S. Forgive any typing errors, I’m on my iPhone and it’s late. Just wanted to spread the word about te repeat show!
Oh and by the way, the movie was fantastic! The live performance was great. So thrilled for the album!
