Can you believe it’s been almost a decade since Kelly Clarkson beat out Justin Guarini to become the first American Idol? And can you believe there was a time when “Kelly or Justin?” was actually a valid question?
Still the all-time reigning Idol in terms of worldwide sales and vocal prowess, Clarkson performed a knockout medley of her hits yesterday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Although her upcoming fifth album has been held back until September, the Texas powerhouse wasn’t holding herself back when she ran through “Miss Independent,” “Walk Away,” and “Since U Been Gone” for a lucky Florida crowd. Watch it here:
Her voice is strong as ever, her attitude still grabs you by the collar, and her hits still sound as relevant. And she looks awesome in those sunglasses, even though they’re usually reserved for irritating sorority girls.
Did you watch her on Ellen? What did you think of her performance? Is she still your favorite Idol winner, or will you reserve judgment until that new William Hung album finally comes along?

Still my favorite and still has the vocal chops.
Is she still fat?
It’s spelled phat and yes. :p
No, she is not still fat. She’s losing weight & good for her but weight shouldn’t matter.
Yup, the first and still the greatest.
Screw Brittany, Beyonce, Ke$ha, Rhianna and all those other pop divas. This is what its all about; no lip-synching or choreographed dance routines, just straight up spontaneous passion and REAL performance. Kelly is the only pop diva worth a d*mn.
She is my fave idol. The first and the best! Love Ya Kelly!
The Real All Time Champ of Idol is Carrie Underwood. Much better performer, more compelling to watch onstage, much more likeable. Kelly flamed out with her My December album, or whatever it was called and never quite came back with All That I Wanted. The songs were a rehash of Breakaway down to every single beat.
Well that depends on your musical taste, obviously you are from South, Carrie, who I like has only had one big mainstream hit that I know of, so the question could be Carrie or Kelly and I say Kelly.
Yeah cause Billboard named Kelly the most succesful Idol for no reason, your obviously into Country which isnt at all important to most of the world, which is why Carrie only sells in US and Canada, unlike Kelly who is challenging the likes of Gaga, Beyonce and Eminem. By the way Carries only competition is Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift and there hardly any competition yet Carrie loses to them ( sometimes )
Actually, this week’s Billboard lists Carrie Underwood as most successful Idol in terms of album sales.
WELL SAID DEVONTEI!!! KC has way more competition in industry, she can hold her own!! and can sing any genre no other artist out there can do that!!!! LOVE KELLY, THE BEST OF THEM ALL!!!
@Brian, Carrie has only sold more in the U.S. but Kelly has sold more worldwide which is better. More album sales, more digital downloads. And last year Billboard named Kelly the most successful Idol so nannner-nanner.
Carrie is so predictable and BORING. If she wasnt pretty should would have faded LONG ago. Kelly is more talented, has better range, and take chances with her music. Carrie is a one trick pony. Everything she sings still sounds country. Kelly’s voice gives chills!!! Greatest singer out there. KELLY IS QUEEN!!!
Brian…do your homework before you speak. Kelly has the biggest sales worldwide. Kelly is a worldwide superstar. Carrie will never be that. She is boring and sings the same old songs. Kelly is superior and versatile. Her pipes can CRUSH Carrie Underwood’s voice in seconds. When Carrie’s looks go so will her career.
Your argument might be more compelling if you’d actually gotten the title of her album right. For your information, “All I Ever Wanted” sold 1.5 million copies worldwide, and churned three big radio hits – one of which still churns out 3,000 recurrent spins a week.
I think there’s room for both Kelly and Carrie. They’ve both been successful with their hits and I don’t care if one of them outsells the other in the sales. It’s the music and how they sing the songs that’s the strong point.
Remember when a non-white male could win? And Lee is the idol vocal champ. jk
Kelly is the one and only Idol.
Always loved Kelly and her songs. Looking forward to her album in September.
I’ve loved a few idols over the years, but Kelly remains supreme. Her voice is a hurricane and she uses it perfectly. Idol was lucky the day she walked in their door.
Whoever said (or has ever said) that Carrie more likable than Kelly is seriously diluted. There is almost nothing innately likable about Underbot.
Kelly, meanwhile, has both an infectious personality and unparalleled vocal ability. The original and still the best.
Amen to that!
Deluded not diluted. “Real Critic” is not liquid.
Deluded (not diluted).
You are so right. Carrie is a fake piece of plastic. A Barbie doll is less fake than Carrie. Who else thinks Carrie dances like a drunken stork on stage. I hate her. It looks so embarrassing.
Kelly sounds and looks amazing. Carrie Underwood is a hack. I can barely remember any other so-called “winners.” Think that about says it all.
holy friggin’ heffer! I remember when she was reasonably thin, now she looks like she swallowed herself! Mooooooo!
She looks beautiful. You have serious issues. You must be really ugly to make a comment like that.
Tears… oh you mean the ripping through action… at first I thought you mean she was crying through (and the pic of her in sunglasses didn’t help the mis-context). Before reading the main body of the article, I was thinking, is everything OK with KC?
Look at that lady in the pink shirt in the still of the video before you press play! She’s fat, too! Fat! Fat! Fat! And I think the lady next to her is OLD! Can you believe that FAT and OLD people actually show themselves in public?
and I can’t believe people like you exist.
Kelly and Carrie are BOTH fantastic singers. Fantastic! Why the need to compare them, or put one down to build the other up? Neither needs it. They have the talent and both seem to have their heads firmly planted on their shoulders…not up their butts. I’m sure Kelly and Carrie would be appalled by the manner by which some of their fans feel they need to use to defend the singer they like better. If you like pop or rock music, chances are you’ll favor Kelly. If you like country music, chances are you’ll like Carrie. Then there are the true idiots like the above poster, who knows what sound cows make! Can you do a ducky now?? How about Mr. Rooster? Give us more of your finely tuned artistic commentary.
This has got to be one of the more intelligent posts on here! i agree one hundred percent. Kelly is still my favorite Idol, always will be, but there’s no reason to hate on other singers because of that. “Can you do a ducky now???” That was hilarious and right on the money!
the thing about kelly is that her songs are memorable. its been about seven years since her album breakaway came out and they still play those songs on the radio. she’s an amazing vocalist and so it doesn’t matter how she looks.
Kelly’s voice is perfection.
