Prince announces another epic residency on 'Lopez Tonight'

One thing you can safely say about Prince: dude is unpredictable. Sometimes he’ll invite Kim Kardashian on stage with him, only to throw her off moments later (when royalty commands you to dance, you dance, woman).

Other times he’ll record collections of absurdly politicized lit- jazz tunes. And just when you think he has retired to Paisley Park to hide from the world and do whatever it is guys in those houses do, he appears like a magical sprite to announce another big event.

On last night’s episode of Lopez Tonight, the Purple One suddenly appeared out of nowhere to reveal not only that he was going to be playing the show next Wednesday (April 13) but that he was also launching a 21-night residency in Los Angeles. Witness the phone call here:

Prince always seems to show up unexpected and in the most curious places (not unlike Bigfoot, or a Christopher Walken cameo). His appearance on Lopez’s show next week is probably the biggest booking in the show’s brief history, and Lopez is actually becoming quite a force for after-hours music performances on TV (who else would think to book 2010 viral hitmaker Antoine Dodson?). Prince very rarely finds himself on the sets of late night shows, though he did do a residency on The Tonight Show at the end of Jay Leno’s first run.

As for the big announcement, it’s certainly good news for residents of Southern California. Prince’s shows in the New York area in December and January provided incredible entertainment, and though His Tinyness is getting up there in years, he can still grind it out. And he also knows that people mostly don’t care about anything he has recorded since 1992, which is why most of the set lists in New York were less Lotusflow3r and more 1999.

So what song—or songs—should Prince bust out on Lopez Tonight next week? We’re always happy to hear a little “Let’s Go Crazy” or “Little Red Corvette,” but maybe he’ll reach deeper into the back catalog for a hidden gem. Is it too much to hope for “Let’s Pretend We’re Married”?

    • Tom

I want to buy him some shoulder pads.

  • Judy3899

Starfish and Coffee would be my pick.

  • Michelle

Saw him perform live in Vegas when he was in residency at the Palms and it was AMAZING. Cant wait to see his highness on Lopez!

    • B

      Palms? Wasn’t it the Rio?

  • Jon

He should do “Abraham Lincoln was a Racist”.

  • True Blue

Hmm, he’s 52, has hip problems, and can still put on better performances than most artists half his age. No lame excuses from him or his fans. Delusional people who stan for lazy no-talents should watch and learn.

      Amen to that.

  • BrandAid1138

just saw him in greensboro, nc 2 weeks ago and it was a fantastic show!! it’d be awesome if he’d play his 2nd encore which was: Jungle Love, Roller Coaster of Love and Play that Funky Music White Boy!! Just a fantastic performer!

“…he also knows that people mostly don’t care about anything he has recorded since 1992, which is why most of the set lists in New York were less Lotusflow3r and more 1999.”
Sorry to disagree. He’s had amazing songs on every single CD he’s ever released. Don’t get me started on how a hit becomes a hit in this day and age. It ain’t always about quality. You know it. I know it. Just purchase a ticket already and go. Whatever he plays is going to blow your mind. No other human being has the amount or depth of talent that this man possesses.

Totally agree with you. I’ve seen him live 26 times and I live in L.A. so I’ll probably see him at least 3 or 4 times more during this stint. He’s incomparable.

  • Miss Pam

I totally agree with Vera. Just because YOU don’t know any of his music past Purple Rain does not mean his fans are unaware. Black Sweat anyone?

    • Princess

I must agree w/ Miss Pam & Vera. I’ve been a Prince fan for many years and I’m always reading how anything released after the symbol album has lacked any substance. Prince showed amazing versatility, by exploring different musical genres and proving that he is an amazingly talented musician. If you choose to like material by how many units it sells, stick to your top 40. I would suggest when it comes to Prince to get over the Purple Rain era and give all the other stuff a listen; there are moments of pure genius and unparalleled musicianship contained within them all.

I was JUST in LA! Ugh, I must catch Prince next time he’s in NYC.

  • yepyep

    I hate all Prince fans!!!!
I have not been able to go to one of his concerts in God knows how long, so yeah Im a bitter fan, a jealous one, an envyious one, must I go on…lol
just joking, but the people that have gone to the concerts you guys are lucky. My cousin took me to a concert and it counted 18 fu words and it was only in the introduction.

  • BJohnson

Please come and bring your tour to Atlanta!!

  • suska

I think i’m the ultimate Prince fan, discovered him waaaaayyyy before Purple Rain. In the ’70’s just starting out. He had an afro! Can you believe it? I still have the foto.

    • Squishmar

I saw him live for the first time in 1981 when he opened for the Rolling Stones(!) I’ve been lucky enough to see him an additional 25 times since then. I also have two tattoos of the Symbol on my body.

The biggest let down of my life was to see my 1st Prince Concert in London at the O2 Arena (21 nights), good show with free CD, only problem was the SOUND SYSTEM WAS CRAP. Since that night I have NEVER been back to that Venue! So for the benefit of all those Prince Fans who have waited a long long time, I honestly hope the LA Forum sound system is better! Enjoy!

  • RBlues

Price is, hands down, the BEST concert I have ever been to (and we had nosebleed seats)! Every single person in that audience was wrapped around his little finger AND dancing non-stop (including my husband who a) doesn’t dance and b) wasn’t a Prince fan going in). It was awesome and I wish it would have gone on for hours. Note to Kim K.–how dare you think you’re gonna get pulled up on stage and just stand there looking pretty–WTF?

    • RBlues

Oops! Obviously, I meant Prince is the best concert, etc.

  • PT

    AMEN to ‘Starfish and Coffee’!
    how about ‘Mountains’?!!

    • Cheryl

Those are two of my all time favorites, too! I also liked TAMBOURINE, CONDITION OF THE HEART, BALLAD OF DOROTHY PARKER along w/Starfish & Coffee and Mountains.
