'Glee' star Matthew Morrison and 'American Idol' winner Kris Allen talk collaborating on new single, 'Still Got Tonight'

The worlds of two of Fox’s musical giants are colliding: Glee‘s Matthew Morrison and American Idol season 8 winner Kris Allen have collaborated on Morrison’s second single, “Still Got Tonight,” off Morrison’s solo album due May 10.

So how did these two superstars get together? Call it a happy accident. Allen originally wrote “Still Got Tonight” years ago, with songwriters Andrew Frampton and Steve Kipner, but ended up not using the track. Morrison then wound up working with Frampton and Kipner on his upcoming album and they brought the song to the Glee star. But Morrison didn’t realize that Allen was also involved in the song’s creation.

“The funny thing is I didn’t even know he wrote on it,” says Morrison. “Steve and Andrew said they had this song and I heard it and I was like ‘Oh my God this song is incredible.’ I just put down a vocal on it. The first I heard about [Kris' involvement] was he tweeted it that he had a song on my record.”

Adds Allen, “I got an email a couple weeks ago from one of the guys and it said, ‘Hey man, we’re gonna get this new song on the Matthew Morrison record.’ And they said it was going to be the next single so it was pretty exciting.” The two singers finally met for the first time this week on the set of Glee. “He’s a really cool guy,” says Morrison of Allen. “Really kind of just down-home, a down to earth Arkansas guy.”

For Morrison, it’s a chance to display a more emotional sound compared to his first single, “Summer Rain.” Says the actor, “For me, I love how my voice is just different on this song. I kind of try and rough it up a little bit more. I don’t have that rock voice in me innately but, when I have to dig deep, I’ll go for it.”

It is a really terrific song. I bought it on iTunes today.

    • Tim

      I still have heartburn

  • Joseph

Personally, I think Morrison’s talent is not meant as a recording artist. He is terrific as Broadway song and dance artist. But I wish him luck in his recording endeavour.

  • Lolo

I think the song is great. Very easy on the ears!

  • SAHSOUHA1

Love, Love, Love your recap .. it’s amazinggg…I adore KRIS Allen & I am heartbroken he didn’t include this epic song in his amazing first Album..KRIS GIVES EXTRA DEPTH TO ANY SONG he does….I can hear his fingerprints all over this song..it’s just fantastic..wish MATT MORRISON all the best & success with it! IT’S A REAL GOOD SOLID SINGLE, I ALREADY BOUGHT IT FROM iTunes!

      Paaalease…they both suck

Hey AnonymouSly yourS, I don’t think anybody’s being ‘Racist’ on here. Slang talk or aiverbbated phrases are used on short chats to make points without writing monologues. If anything approaches ‘Racist’, it’s the crowd of “Thia Lovers” that are trying to make it look like there’s an overpowering number of people that favor Thia over all the rest. And usually, bloggers only mob up in this sort of way when they are of one mindset to favor only one type of contestant with all the same kind of lovefest comments in other words “disguised racism” that acts all offended when others notice there’s a strange pattern of comments going on. My advice to ‘you people’ (LOL) would be to stop attacking those that notice the Thia Wierdness Fans, otherwise you might start losing some of us who actually like her for her voice, looks and talent irregardless of her Asian ethnicity. Yes, I really like Thia. But, I like Naima better; just like other folks like other contestants better. So stop with the attempted mind control AnonymouSly yourS!

…I’d rather hear Kris sing it…

    • Ktct

      Me, too!

      • Rox

The song is more suitable for Kris I think

    • Dee

I wonder if that’s how the Script fans felt when Kris sang LLWD? I’m a Kris fan, but I think this song sounds really good…bought it on Itunes.

      • LAMusic

Dee, yep. That’s how it is with some hard core fans of singers/songwriters. Reality is they can’t record and release everything they write. It is great if another artist records it and has a hit. Win/Win situation for all involved.

      • PN

Maybe Live Like We’re Dying didn’t sound well for The Script, so they left it off their first album and gave that rejected song to Kris Allen. It sounded great on Kris’ own album.

  • FionaG

Love this song! I brought it on itunes as soon as it was out, it definitely has Kris’ touch on it, but Matt sounds simply wonderful.
Great collaboration between Kris and Matt! Maybe someday they can sing together? That’d be awesome!

  • katy

    Sounds great.

  • AndyA

So, Kris and Matt collide, the sparks fly.
    Great song!

  • Trish

What would overwhelm me with joy would be if the two of them would sing this together on American Idol! FOX needs to make it happen!

    • Bree

Matt would be better off trying to sell the song himself on Idol. Kris hasn’t exactly set the world on fire when he has appeared on the show.

      • Jane

Seriously? Set the world ob fire? What does that even mean and why shouldn’t he help sell a song he has a hand in writing? He was able to go over platinum (1.6 million +) on his first single. I’m sorry that you don’t see that as an acomplishment. No many artists acomplish that in these times in the music industry.

      • Dee

Seriously? Kris was in the audience on idol a couple of weeks ago. He got 3 seconds of air time and trended WORLDWIDE on twitter. I’d say that’s pretty hot!

    • G-Mom

Wow! Great idea!! A.I. really needs to have Kris on this season!!

  • Julia

They did a little interview on MTV together today. There was so much cuteness on that screen it just about killed me. I am loving the song.

    • emily

      ^^
They were just so cute together, and the interviewer said that a new bromance was born, I’d totally ship them. haha

      • Areewan

Light My Fire was written by Robbie Krieger, not Jim Morrison. Morrison cnriotbuted with a few words only (^no time to wallow in the mire ). Also I don’t agree with most of what you wrote but no problem, that’s your opinion.

  • kunde

Lots of extremely good reading here, many thanks! I was searching on yahoo when I uncovered your article, I’m going to add your feed to Google Reader, I look forward to additional from you.

  • Michael

I think that is the first Matthew Morrison interview I read where he didn’t make a point to mention he “isn’t” gay.

    • emily

That’s obviously not true. Or you just happened to read all those interviews where he mentioned his sexuality, of course there are a whole lot where he said nothing about it, people just didn’t notice that.

      • Michael

You obviously take this waaaaaaay to seriously. So wait is he straight? He hasn’t mentioned it over and over about all the “girls” he got on Broadway…Yeah and I like girls too.

    • Kathleen

It is not like he tells reporters “I’m straight” or “I have banged a lot of girls”. The reporter asks him questions about this stuff and he answers the questions. Then everybody zeros in on his answer and acts like he is the one obsessed with making sure we all know he likes girls when in fact it is the reporter who asked.

      • Michael

It is not like he tells reporters “I’m straight” or “I have banged a lot of girls”.

Um…that IS exactly what the closet case does.

      • Jude

I get what you are saying, Kathleen. He is answering questions he is asked. He doesn’t walk in the room and announce that he is straight and make sure to print that. And Michael, you seem to be a bit obsessed with Matthew’s sexuality. Get a hobby or somethin’. BTW, it is a really good song!

      • Lee

I’m with Kathleen and Jude. Not everyone is a sex pervert like Michael. Who cares what his sexual orientation is. The bottom line is does he make good music. That should be the only thing important in an interview.

  • Mimi

Great song, but they were a little heavy on the production during the chorus. Morrison has a good voice.

    • econruth

That’s what I thought too. Can’t really hear him during the chorus.

    • Angie

I have to agree–they were a bit heavy there, but I still love it.

  • mar

Matt is a consummate performer. He can do anything. I love Kris too and I really love the song.

    • Halil

I’ve always had a weird roahtienslip with the Doors. For every song I hate by them, there’s always another song that blows me away. I detest The End , yet I love Alabama Song . I can’t stand Light My Fire but I always get happy when I hear Peace Frog . I’ve thrown people out of my car for turning up the radio when Break On Through or Touch Me or Hello I Love You comes on, but whenever LA Woman comes on, I turn it up to 11. Morrison’s restrained vocals at the beginning of The Crystal Ship are just fantastic. It’s probably one of my favorite Doors songs.

  • 8IrisDor

two talented guys collaborate = ears in heaven.
    Love Matt and Kris.
