Kings of Leon's mind-bending trailer for documentary 'Talihina Sky': Watch it here

Categories: Kings of Leon, New Stuff

Up until this point, Kings of Leon‘s narrative has mostly centered around the fact that they are all family members (brothers Nathan, Caleb and Jared, plus cousin Matthew) and that they have graduated from blog-rock darlings to mainstream arena-fillers (thanks primarily to smash “Use Somebody”).

But little is known of their early life, which Talihina Sky: The Story of Kings of Leon will apparently illuminate. The just-released trailer for the film (which will see its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival) focuses on the family’s transient life during the three brothers’ youth, which they spent driving around the South setting up tent revivals overseen by their Pentecostal preacher father, Ivan Leon Followill: READ FULL STORY »

Pregnant Mariah Carey gets naked, bares her baby bump: 'My ultimate goal was to share this incredibly personal moment with my true fans.'

Just last week, the very pregnant pop diva Mariah Carey gave us a glimpse of her butterfly-covered baby bump via Twitter, and now she’s gone even further: In a (possibly bizarre?) twist on that famous Demi Moore Vanity Fair cover, Mariah Carey has bared it all in the final few days of her pregnancy for the cover of Life & Style magazine, which you can glimpse right here. One word: wowza.

Carey says she went nude for fans.”I was feeling very vulnerable about taking pictures at all right now, but then I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to document this once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Mariah told the magazine. “My ultimate goal was to share this incredibly personal moment with my true fans.”

The “We Belong Together” singer’s due date is in a few weeks, but contractions sent her to the hospital on March 27. “Now I have so much respect for mothers everywhere, especially those who’ve had difficult pregnancies or given birth to multiples,” said Carey, who’s having twinsa boy and a girl. “We need to have Mother’s Day once a week!”

How do you feel about Mariah’s baby bump-baring nudity? Startled? Loving it? Freaked out by it? Are you ready for her twins?

Death Cab for Cutie delivers the first live-broadcast scripted music video: Get ready to 'meh'

Last night, Death Cab for Cutie made history of some sort when they delivered “You Are the Tourist,” the first scripted music video that aired live as it was being filmed.

Now you might be asking yourself, what does that really mean? Isn’t this just like a live concert broadcast, but instead of actually playing music, the band is just just lip-syncing on a closed set?

Well, that’s where the whole scripted element comes into play—or in this case, where it should have come into play. In a post-OK Go world, you would expect a stunt like this to have some eyebrow-raising choreographed craziness.

Instead, band members wander around while a line of Ziegfeld Follies-styled dancers handle any moves that might be tough to pull off in one take. Watch it here (skip ahead to the blue marker): READ FULL STORY »

Britney Spears premieres 'Till the World Ends' video: Watch it here

Till-the-World-Ends

The latest video from Britney Spears, for pulsing single “Till the World Ends,” has hit the web, and it’s pretty much just what you’d expect if you’ve listened to the lyrics (or, you know, read the title of the song): a bunch of people dancing, umm, until the world ends. Or, actually, while the world ends?

The clip opens with a date flashing across the screen: December 21, 2012. Sound familiar? It’s the date that has been bandied around forever as the one which some sort of transformative, apocalypitic event will occur and basically blow the world to smithereens. (Remember the Roland Emmerich disaster flick?)

But in Britney world, while December 21, 2012, might be the day the world is ending, it’s also the day that she sends it out with an underground dance party. Need access? Just find the nearest manhole in the street and slither down to the rave she’s cooking in the sewers. Because, children, she’s going to be dancing “Till the World Ends” for a long time.

Before we go any further, take a gander at the video here:

New Sade song, 'I'm Still in Love With You': Hear it here

Sade

The first of two new songs from Sade’s upcoming Greatest Hits collection has arrived, and it is—as one would expect from the smoky, ever-elegant chanteuse—a cover of a 1974 lighters-up power ballad from a hard-riffing arena-rock gods Thin Lizzy.

Are we joking? We are not! Stream her eminently smooth take on the band’s “I’m Still in Love With You” below: READ FULL STORY »

Remembering Kurt Cobain: Looking back at EW's archived Nirvana reviews

Seventeen years ago today, Kurt Cobain took his life. Even though it’s been nearly two decades, it’s still difficult to know what to say about something like this. Attempting to tease meaning out of the tragedy of his suicide or philosophizing about the burden of genius ultimately seems empty.

Instead, let’s focus on the reason so many people love and commemorate Cobain: his music. Entertainment Weekly has been around since 1990, which means that aside from Nirvana’s Sub Pop debut, Bleach, we have archived contemporary reviews of all their albums. Here was what we had to say about the major releases from the nineties’ most revered, beloved, and imitated band.

On Nevermind

“The problem with current college-radio rock is that most so-called alternative bands desperately want to sound normal. On their collar-grabbing second album, and their first for a major label, the Seattle trio Nirvana never entertain that notion.”

“Nirvana may not stand a chance of selling anywhere near as many records as Guns N’ Roses, but don’t tell Cobain; you never know how he’ll react.” —David Browne, Oct. 25, 1991 [NOTE: You might actually be surprised-slash-disappointed to learn that statement still holds true—worldwide, Guns N' Roses have sold more records than Nirvana. Also, this write-up originally ran far below a review Kid 'N Play's long-forgotten Face the Nation album.] READ FULL STORY »

EMI artists Coldplay, Katy Perry, Daft Punk and more auctioning off a load of cool stuff for Japan relief

EMI and their roster of pop stars are offering their clothes, concerts tickets, and an assortment of fan must-haves for a great cause. Partnering with the Red Cross, EMI is hosting a worldwide auction for victims affected by last month’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Starting today, fans can visit EMI Family 4 Japan on Ebay and scoop up things like Katy Perry’s California Dreams Tour cupcake trampoline.

Not into that? Well, maybe you’d like Chris Martin’s  jacket from the Viva la Vida world tour. What about Daft Punk’s 1987 Ferrari 412 from their Electroma movie? Or a guitar signed by Willie Nelson? They’re all there for the picking. The first half of the sale ends April 15; the second from April 11 to the 21st.

To top that off, EMI plans to match the cash earned up to a maximum of one million euros. Classy move, right? Weeks ago iTunes released Songs for Japan, featuring 38 tracks of well-known hits with proceeds going to the ailing country. It’s nice to see the entertainment community playing its part.

Plan on checking out EMI’s Ebay auction? Let us know.

Mary J. Blige preps sequel to her 1994 classic 'My Life': Watch the first video here

Mary-J-Blige

Mary J. Blige cemented her title as the Queen of Hip Hop Soul by exposing her sorrows and heartaches on her classic 1994 album My Life.

Cuts like “Be Happy” and her cover of Rose Royce’s “I’m Goin’ Down” revealed a young woman unable to give or receive much-needed love. 17 years later, Blige–married and mature–seemingly is past the pain that once plagued her, which is why the title of her forthcoming album throws me for such a loop.

This morning Mary announced that her next offering, out Sept. 20, is called My Life II, The Journey Continues. The fact that she’s revisiting themes from the original certainly makes this an ambitious effort, to say the least—the album features production assistance from a who’s who of hip-hop and R&B’s elite, including Danja, Kanye West, Stargate, Swizz Beatz and The Underdogs.

My Life was an extremely personal set, recorded during a period when she was experiencing domestic abuse. Though she might not have those struggles to pull from this time around, Blige says inspiration’s not too far away.

“This album is a reflection of the times and lives of people all around me,” she explains in a press release. My Life II‘s Jerry Wonda-produced first single, “Someone To Love Me (Naked),” out yesterday,  finds a not-so-happy Mary J. wrestling with her temper. “I’ve got issues just like you,” she sings. Well, maybe that old Mary’s not as far gone as we thought. Check out her, Diddy and Lil Wayne in the video after the jump.

'Glee' creator Ryan Murphy offers apology to Kings of Leon; did Gwyneth fix it?

Apparently “f— you” means something different to Ryan Murphy than it does to most of us, because he has apologized for dissing Kings of Leon back in January, claiming “That’s not what [he] meant” to say after they declined Glee use of the song “Use Somebody.”

“I didn’t speak with as much clarity as I would have liked,” Murphy explained. “Who am I to say, ‘F— you’? That’s not what I meant. I completely understand when artists don’t want a show or another artist to interpret their songs.” READ FULL STORY »

Britney Spears' 'Till the World Ends' video teaser: Look, I can bounce-dance!

Recently, it seems like a musical treat from Ms. Britney Spears has been dropping nearly every day: snippet after snippet, single after single, a video, the full album! Today (err, yesterday, really) it was a 30-second teaser for Spears’ next video for club banger “Till the World Ends.” (The full video will hit VEVO tomorrow, and don’t worry—we’ll be all over it here at The Music Mix.)

The clip we’ve been treated to is basically the “oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” chorus part of the jam, and the main feature — when it comes to Britney’s ever-delightful moves — is bouncing! Because, why wouldn’t you bounce to such a chorus? It just feels natural. Also, the vid features a post-apocalyptic vibe that finds people going underground…to go bounce-dance with her. Naturally! As of right now, there seems to be no product placement, except, of course, Spears’ standard wigs and weaves (if those count). Enjoy here:
