It’s not every day that we lose a legend. The New Republic is reporting the unfortunate death of Nick Hathaway (né Jameson Babcock) at age 96.

Hathaway is best known for penning songs like “If You’re Running Away from Me, I’m Behind You All the Way,” “The War Between the States of Mind,” and, of course, his oft-covered ditty “Ooka Dooka Dicka Dee.”

While he may not be as well-known as some of his contemporaries, Hathaway still helped to influence a whole generation of musicians. Here is a clip of singer-songwriter Jill Sobule and John Doe, of the seminal punk band X, doing a short tribute version of his iconic Tin Pan Alley tune: READ FULL STORY »

Now that the smoke has cleared from Enrique Iglesias and Britney Spears’ botched attempt at a joint tour, Spears is rumored to have her eyes on several new prospects.

TMZ has quoted an unnamed source as saying the she’s in “serious talks” with rapstress Nicki Minaj. Lil Wayne’s Young Money teammate would be a great fit for Britney’s tour: She’s hot, pop, and insanely energetic. And the tour Nicki’s currently on, Wayne’s I Am Still Music jaunt, will be over in time to make Britney’s June 17 start.

In addition, MTV is reporting that Jersey Shore cast member DJ Pauly D might be spinning at the top of Spears’ show (he and Spears share a manager). The Jonas Brothers’ Joe Jonas is also in contention for the opening slot, they say—less odd than you might think, since he’s set to release a dance-oriented pop album.

So who do you think Britney should pick: The rapper, the rocker and hopeful dance star, or the Shore-thing DJ? Take our poll after the jump and weigh in.

Producer Linda Perry—she’s conjured hits for Pink and Gwen Stefani, among others—has come to the defense of Christina Aguilera, for whom she helmed the 2003 smash “Beautiful,” noting that the recent flack her musical collaborator has endured is nothing new for Xtina.

“Christina’s always had the bad rap,” says Perry of the star, who has been roundly criticized in the press for her under-performing album Bionic and film debut Burlesque and that absent-minded National Anthem. “As far as I’ve known her, everybody’s always given her a hard time. She’s a different little bird.”

Perry wasn’t trying to stir up sympathy for the full-throated pop star, though. In fact, according to Perry, Aguilera “definitely doesn’t care” what critics have to say about her. READ FULL STORY »

Jay-Z under NBA scrutiny for post-game visit

Categories: Hip-Hop/Rap, Jay-Z

The National Basketball Association is looking into an allegation that rapper Jay-Z visited the victorious Kentucky Wildcats in their locker room following Sunday night’s win against North Carolina, the AP reports. Jay-Z is a part-owner of the New Jersey Nets, whose arena in Newark hosted the game, but league rules prohibit team personnel from mingling or having contact with amateur players who are not yet eligible for the draft. Jay-Z’s spokesperson said the artist had no comment on the matter.
