TV on the Radio's Gerard Smith loses battle with cancer

Only a month after announcing that he was taking time off from the band to get treatment for lung cancer, TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith passed away today, according to a statement on TVOTR’s official website. He was 34.

“We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer,” the announcement read. “Gerard passed away the morning of April 20th, 2011. We will miss him terribly. There will be more information as it becomes available.”

The band has canceled the next five shows on its current tour to support of their extremely well-received fourth album Nine Types of Light, which debuted at no. 12 on today’s Billboard charts. Smith joined the group full-time in 2005, just in time to record their breakout Return to Cookie Mountain, and his diagnosis was announced shortly after the completion of Light.

Smith was a quiet guy who was passionate about music and brought a sturdy dynamism to one of indie rock’s most exciting, thought-provoking collectives. TV on the Radio is a geniuses-only club, and Smith’s absence—both as a musician and as an all-around good guy—will be deeply felt among the remaining members.

For a sample of Smith’s excellent work, check out the video for “The Golden Age” (which appeared on the band’s 2008 album Dear Science). Smith lends the track a deceptively sinister low end and also wears those spirit animals awfully well: READ FULL STORY »

Lady Gaga has been courting controversy her entire career, to the point where the star sometimes takes heat for stuff she hasn’t even done yet.

And while she’s busy beating back people hating on her choice of album cover art, she also alienated legions of “Weird Al” Yankovic fans (or at least the two million people who follow him on Twitter).

The longtime parodist published a blog post today explaining why his new track “I Perform This Way”—a parody of Gaga’s char-topping smash “Born This Way”—is currently being given away for free and not getting a featured spot as the first single from his upcoming new album (nor is it getting a proper video treatment). Check out his version after the jump.

Update: Yankovic’s manager told the New York Times on Wednesday evening that Gaga’s camp has given permission for “Perform This Way” to appear on Weird Al’s next album.

Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson team up for smokey 'Superman' video

Nelson-Snoop

Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson have a lot in common: They’re both legends in their respective genres. They each make dubious choices when it comes to collaborators. Both are braid enthusiasts. And both love country music.

Of course, they are also both advocates of a certain herbal substance that will grab a handful of headlines today. Appropriately, Snoop just dropped a new video for “Superman,” which features a guest spot from Nelson. Check it out after the jump.

Lauryn Hill's Moving Target tour lands in Los Angeles: Old-school songs with new-school flavor

Lauryn Hill’s latest tour, Moving Target, finally made its way to Los Angeles on Monday night, following a weekend appearance at the Coachella Festival in Palm Springs.

The singer hit up downtown’s Club Nokia for a healthy dose of songs pulled from several realms of her musical history, including her time with the Fugees, her Grammy-winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and even a little tribute to Bob Marley. [Note: The photo shown here isn't of Hill on Monday evening, because press photos were not made available.]

Hill opened her concert—which, despite reports of extreme tardiness in the past, started only about 20 minutes after the scheduled time—by declaring to the crowd: “If it’s okay with you, we’d like to do some classic music.” And classic music she certainly did, launching with her Miseducation hit “Everything Is Everything,” before rolling into Refugee Camp All-Stars’ “Sweetest Thing” and weaving back to Miseducation with “Lost Ones.”

But to be honest, her use of term “classic” should be interpreted loosely, especially when you consider how Hill, wearing an oversized dress and suit jacket, performed the songs. While she certainly sang the lyrics to the aforementioned tunes, they were only recognizable as the songs we’re familiar with at certain, fleeting points. Not that that’s a bad thing—Hill’s voice is still deep and luscious as it ever was but anyone hoping for a tour through the recorded versions of her songs will be sorely disappointed.

The Kanye West Foundation, a charity founded by his late mother to help combat the high school dropout rate by providing music production programs for under-served youth, closed last month.

The New York Times obtained an email its former executive director, Joseph Collins, sent to associates in March. “I am reaching out to let you know that the Kanye West Foundation (kanyewestfoundation.org) has officially closed it doors after a successful 4+ years of programming and events,” Collins wrote. “It has been an incredible experience working with Kanye and the board to realize his mother’s vision and I am honored to have been given the opportunity to lead the Foundation.”

Collins declined to comment for the Times. A rep for West has not returned EW’s request for comment.

Lady Gaga gets nearly naked, slams haters, and defends 'Born This Way' in new interview

Categories: Divas!, Ladies, Lady Gaga, Pop

Lady Gaga has a message for anyone who thinks her image is contrived or fake: “F— off.” In the latest issue of NME, Gaga stood up for herself and her artisctic integrity. Though she’s known for her wild outfits and crazy style, they don’t define her. Mail Online found some potty-mouthed quotes from the interview.

“Let me tell you something,” she began. “If you f—ing rip my hairbow and my wig off my f—ing head, my shoes, my bra, every single thing on my body, and you throw me on a piano with a microphone, I will f—ing make you cry.”

Jeff Bridges signs a record deal, inches closer to becoming his character from 'Crazy Heart'

Crazy-Heart

Jeff Bridges won an Oscar for his portrayal of a down-and-out musician on the road to nowhere in Crazy Heart, and now he’s officially on the road to real-life musician-dom with a record deal on Blue Note—the jazz-originated label that is currently home to Norah Jones and Amos Lee, among others.

Bridges will team up with old friend and producer T-Bone Burnett (who also twiddled the knobs on the Crazy Heart soundtrack, which won him an Oscar as well) to release an album. It will contain a handful of original compositions as well as covers of songs by Tom Waits, Bo Ramsey and Greg Brown.

His solo debut, due later this summer, will also feature guest appearances by the likes of Roseanne Cash and Sam Phillips (among others), though there is no word on whether or not Bridges’ greatest duet partner will be along for the ride.

Between the album news and Bridges penchant for getting real with reporters, it’s like the actor really is morphing into his Crazy Heart alter ego Otis “Bad” Blake (though honestly, better him than Clu 2).

What do you think readers—are you stoked for Bridges’ latest role?
