Duff McKagan gives us the lowdown on reuniting with Axl Rose, his band's new CD, and how to invest your poker winnings

Duff McKagan is best known for playing bass for Guns N’ Roses in their Appetite for Destruction heyday—a period during which McKagan abused his body so badly that his pancreas ultimately exploded.

These days, McKagan’s extracurricular activities are of a more sober stripe: He has written about finance for Playboy; regularly contributes columns to both ESPN.com and Seattle Weekly; and is even now available for hire as a public speaker.

“I spoke to a bunch of businessmen in Seattle,” says McKagan. “Titans of industry. The thing is that business and success, and how hard it is, doesn’t look any different whether you’re playing a gig at eleven o’clock at night or you’re going to work at nine in the morning at a law firm. So I talk about that. But ultimately all those guys want to know about is how many chicks I’ve f—ed!”

The man is also still rocking hard as the frontman for his band, Duff McKagan’s Loaded, whose latest CD, The Taking, is out tomorrow. After the jump, McKagan talks about his new release, his forthcoming memoir, his recent reunion with Axl Rose, and why he is very much not “the Bernie Madoff of metal.”

Matthew Morrison unveils Elton John duet

You can’t hide from Matthew Morrison these days. He’s on Glee. He’s on talk shows. He’s live in concert. He’s on record. And now he’s in an Elton John song sandwich.

Morrison just dropped his duet with John, which mashes up “Rocket Man” and “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” into one blast of classic Elton; listen here. (The song will be available for download on Amazon tomorrow).

Morrison’s clean tenor pairs well with the Rocket Man’s, though his pipes lack the signature oomph of Elton’s elastic instrument.

Plus, “Rocket” has been covered to death, and Morrison’s version lacks the strangeness of William Shatner’s, the spookiness of Maynard James Keenan’s, or the meta-hilarity of Stewie Griffin’s.

What do you think, readers? Tell us in the comments below.

'Glee' star Darren Criss calls his show 'A magical marshmallow castle in the sky,' admits you may have had enough of him, and more in new interview

Glee has been a tremendously fertile musical venue for stars both established (Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos) and new (Matthew Morrison’s album is due out next month).

The latest beneficiary of the Glee effect is Darren Criss—a.k.a. gay dreamboat Blaine Anderson—now the undisputed star of the new album Glee: The Music Presents The Warblers.

In a cover story in the new issue of Billboard, Criss talks about the album (which hits stores tomorrow), his projects outside of the show, and the sudden success that has been thrust upon him. “When I look back on Glee and on this album, it’s like I was offered to live in a golden marshmallow house in the sky,” he told the magazine. “It’s like, ‘Sure! I’ll take it!’ I never thought that it would ever happen, that I would get a magical marshmallow castle in the sky, but my God, thank you.”

Criss had already developed something of a reputation before joining the Glee cast last year, as the mastermind behind the viral hit A Very Potter Musical, and also made waves in the musical community with his company StarKid.

According to Criss, he’s still trying to balance everything with the pressure of being the new guy on one of the most feverishly followed shows on TV. Still, he’s carving out a place for himself. “I’m still the new guy, so I don’t want to go around saying, ‘We should do this. We should do that.’ But Ryan [Murphy] is always open to ideas, and I did at one point say, ‘Hey, Neon Trees’ “Animal” is a really great song,’” he explained. “And about a week later it showed up in the script.”

As for a possible upcoming solo album, he says: “We’re working on it—we’re really excited and it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I’m so thrilled that it’s something that can happen because of Glee, and like the Warblers album, I hope I can do it justice and make it something that people can really enjoy.”

And just in case you think the show has gone a little overboard with Blaine in the past few weeks, don’t worry—Criss feels your pain. “They kind of called it out, which I’m glad they did,” he joked. “Blaine definitely had his moment in the sun. I think it’s time to focus back on the characters that fans of the show really know and love … I think we’re focusing a little more back on New Directions and taking a little bit of a break from the Warblers.”

Do you agree, Gleeks? Or is there no such thing as too much Blaine? Let us know in the comments below.

Lady Gaga reveals cover art for 'Born This Way' album: Do you like Gaga as a machine?

lady-gaga-btw

On the heels of the leak of latest single “Judas,” Lady Gaga revealed the cover image for her forthcoming album Born This Way in a series of tweets yesterday and today.

(The reveal of Gaga’s album artwork has become something of an event in itself.) As you probably expect, the image, shown here, is one clearly intended to make you think and, maybe, wonder a bit: It depicts Gaga as something of a metal minotaur, part human and part…motorcycle? Yup, part motorcycle.

Fun fact: The lady who plays Cougar Town’s delightful wackjob Laurie Keller—that would be Freaks & Geeks and Dawson’s Creek alum Busy Phillips—goes big at the Coachella Music Festival every year. (In fact, she’s probably rolling up there right about now.)

So considering that fact, and the fact that Cougar is returning from hiatus this coming Tuesday, April 18 in a special, we-need-viewers timeslot after Dancing with the Stars, we thought it more than high time to see what trips her fine-tuned musical trigger. (Surprise: She’s got a taste for indie rock!) Here’s what’s on Philipps’ iPod:

Mumford & Sons strip down 'The Cave': Watch a piece of their intimate New York City show

The success of English group Mumford & Sons urges me to conjure up an old-timey kind of saying. Something like, “Good music always wins.”

Though it may not always be true, it’s wonderful to see a band or artist that doesn’t necessarily try to make pop music or fit the archetype of a MTV generation superstar win. Essentially, they’re a folk collective–not exactly fodder for club DJs and big radio stations. But there they were at the Grammys months ago alongside legendary Bob Dylan, earning the appreciation of Johnny-come-latelies new fans. And now their year-old debut album Sigh No More is platinum in the U.S. Cheers to them!

Earlier this week the boys performed at P.C. Richard & Son Theater in downtown New York City, playing several cuts from Sigh to a crowd of chic women and bearded men. The entire set–including comedic quips from the foursome–will be posted April 19th on iHeartRadio’s YouTube channel. Until then, you can check out their stripped down performance of “The Cave” after the jump. In it lead singer Marcus Mumford humbly describes his group as “pretty mediocre, overweight, sweaty Englishmen trying to play music.” We know they’re better than that. He’s right about the sweaty part, though.

Watch Boston duo Karmin's amazing cover of Chris Brown's 'Look at Me Now'

Nicki, Ke$ha — meet Amy Heidemann. She’s one half of Boston musical duo Karmin (the other is Nick Noonan), and she happens to rap as well as she sings. Which, as luck would have it, is very, very well.

In just three days, Karmin’s fantastic cover of Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now” has been viewed over 560,000 times on YouTube. In it, Amy flawlessly recreates verses spit by Brown, Busta Rhymes, and Lil Wayne, while Nick backs her up on keyboard (and sings occasionally himself). Never thought a white girl could convincingly flow like Weezy? Think again: READ FULL STORY »
