Dave Grohl Q&A: The Foo Fighters frontman talks about the new Foos album, saying no to 'Glee,' and playing 'Smells LIke Teen Spirit' for the first time in 18 years

On Tuesday, the Foo Fighters released their seventh CD, Wasting Light, and recently debuted a new documentary, Back and Forth, tracking the band’s tumultuous 17-year-long history.

And let’s not forget that this August will mark 20 years since the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” the song that signaled a seismic shift in modern music—and made megastars of Grohl’s previous band, Nirvana.

All of which seems to have left Grohl, 42, feeling a tad, well, old. “It’s weird when there’s a kid on the bill who comes up and says, ‘Your band was my first concert,’” he muses. “You just think, ‘Oh no. I’m that guy, now? What am I, f—ing Gandalf?’”

In truth, few people would confuse the Foos overlord for the Lord of the Rings wizard. Apart from anything else, Gandalf doesn’t drop the F-bomb nearly as much as Grohl who, after the jump, foul-mouthedly talks about Wasting Light, Back and Forth, and what it was like to play “Smells Like Teen Spirit” for the first time in 18 years.

William Shatner reveals track list of his space-themed album and surprise guest stars -- Bootsy Collins and Brad Paisley are just the beginning

A lot of people talk Shat about Captain Kirk’s music career, but you have to give William credit for sticking to his guns (or in this case, phasers): he’s 80 years old, he stars on a CBS sitcom, he slashes travel prices, and he still finds time to pursue his much-maligned passion for music.

Bill Shatner just posted the track list to his upcoming Searching For Major Tom, a collection of space-themed cover songs that are supposedly heavy on the metal influences (so Saruman of him).

Yes, this means that after thirty-plus years, fans will finally hear a studio version of Shatner’s bizarre talk-sing take on Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” which he first performed at the Science Fiction Film Awards in the ’70s and has since become a so-bad-it’s-impossible-to-stop-watching YouTube favorite.

The list of covers promises the strangest collection of tunes The Shat has yet recorded—which is saying something, since this is a guy who recorded an album combining Shakespeare monologues with “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” and “Mr. Tambourine Man” in the ’60s. And some of his most interesting—and most well-known—musical co-stars. READ FULL STORY »

We already know that Jay-Z’s new website has plenty of confusing design elements and interviews with famous actresses, but today it also became a source for new music.

Santigold, who is signed to Jigga’s Roc Nation Management, dropped a new bomb called “GO” on the site today, and she invited friends: The track features contributions from two-thirds of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Karen O provides  backing vocals, and Nick Zinner lends his trademark guitar noise), and the song was co-produced by Q-Tip, Switch and Santi herself. Give it a spin here. READ FULL STORY »

The single isn’t even released yet, but Lady Gaga is already getting heat for her upcoming “Judas” music video.

Three Arizona-based Latino Activist groups that are condemning “her message of racism and intolerance” in the still-unaired clip. (Although they are also calling her “Lady Rerun” and “Lady Caca” in their statements, so it is possible their next move could be nothing more than a series of “your momma’s so fat” jokes).

The 25-year-old pop star—who will portray prostitute-turned-disciple Mary Magdalene in  the video—is being accused of racial intolerance by virtue of her fixation on Catholicism.

“So, Lady Gaga is playing Mary Magdelene [sic] in her new video,” says Jorge Serrano of Take Back Aztlán, a group that believes much of the Southwestern United States was stolen from people of Aztec descent. READ FULL STORY »

Bruno Mars monkies around in 'The Lazy Song' video: Watch here

Categories: Bruno Mars, Music Videos, Pop, R&B

Excuse the corny headline, but this video was begging for it.

Bruno Mars and his crew of monkey-masked homeboys goof off at his house, ditching whatever responsibilities they’ve got in the clip for his latest single “The Lazy Song.”

It’s a thrifty offering, yet what it lacks in budget is made up for in fun; Bruno and the boys thought up some pretty zany choreography—and do it all in one unbroken camera shot.

For a song about not doing anything, they sure do get busy in it. Check out their antics after the jump.

Rebecca Black's 'Friday' will find a home on 'Glee'; which seat should she take?

Rebecca-Black

In Hollywood, you know you’ve reached critical mass when you’re asked to appear on The Simpsons. In the music world, another Fox show provides the same stamp of transcendence (just as long as it’s not performed by Foo Fighters or Kings of Leon).

Glee is that show, and its latest adoption is Rebecca Black’s viral behemoth “Friday,” which recently surpassed 100 million views on YouTube,

According to nymag.com, the song will appear an upcoming episode that centers around the prom, and will either be sung by Kevin McHale, Chord Overstreet and Mark Salling, or the combination of Salling and returning guest star Jonathan Groff, reprising his role as Vocal Adrenaline leader Jesse St. James.

At this point, both Black and Glee have faced so many backlashes (and, uh, frontlashes) that it’s impossible to tell whether it’s OK to still like them, or whether you should try to be ironic about it or not. What do you think, readers—are you ready for the fun fun fun fun? Should Black make a cameo? Tell us in the comments below.

Ke$ha's $leazy Tour: On the $cene in NYC -- are Carl Bernstein and Nora Ephron closet Ke$ha fans?

A line of showgoers—most of them teenagers, and collectively wearing approximately one metric ton of glitter—furled down three city blocks in Midtown Manhattan last night to see Ke$ha perform at the Roseland Ballroom.

The crowd was about what one would expect from a Ke$ha concert: Boys wearing mesh tank tops, girls sprinkling glitter on each other’s bare legs, some put-upon parents who’d rather be anywhere else, some Cool Moms who were all too happy to chaperone, and 20-somethings like myself who were pretending to be there for ironic purposes but were actually pretty stoked.

I was surprised, though, by how unexpectedly awesome the show was. Judging from some less-than-stellar TV performances, my expectations were low, but for what it’s worth, Ke$ha sounded at least as good live as she does on her recorded tracks. And as far as onstage antics go, she packed infinitely more entertainment value and energy into the show by way of pure, unabashed silliness than Britney Spears did in her much more expensive and lavish Circus tour.

I left the concert with an understanding and appreciation for Ke$ha that I hadn’t had before—and having to pick glitter out of my hair for the next three weeks is a small price to pay for enlightenment. READ FULL STORY »

Green Day's 'American Idiot' Broadway musical to become a movie; who should they cast?

Categories: Green Day

Green Day’s American Idiot, the rock opera based on the band’s album of the same name, will stage its final Broadway performance on April 24 in New York, but it looks like the story may move to the big screen once the stage curtains close.

The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Universal is negotiating the screen rights to American Idiot, and carrying over the show’s director, Michael Mayer. Apparently screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (he won an Oscar for Milk) and Tom Hanks are also in the project’s gravitational pull (Hanks would be involved in some kind of production capacity and probably not playing St. Jimmy, the show’s nefarious dealer/guest-star magnet).

Which brings us to the next point: There are plenty of issues in translating splashy stage musicals into compelling films—you need look no further than 2008′s  Mamma Mia! for proof—but the biggest sticking point in making a movie out of American Idiot will be finding a suitable performer to play the lead role.

Celebrity cameos in the St. Jimmy role from Melissa Etheridge, AFI’s Davey Havok and Billie Joe Armstrong himself aside, the Broadway cast is largely made up of stage vets like Van Hughes (Hairspray, 9 to 5) , David Larsen (Good Vibrations), Rebecca Naomi Jones (Passing Strange). Also, Justin Guarani. Yes, that one.

Who would you like to see reprise their roles onscreen, AmIdios? Original Johnny (and Tony-winning Spring Awakening alum) John Gallagher Jr.? Original Jimmy Tony Vincent? Or are there better-known TV or film actors with the singing and dancing Broadway-baby chops to fill those roles—and the celebrity draw to fill cineplex seats?
