Hear Matthew Morrison and Gwyneth Paltrow duet on 'Over the Rainbow' -- EXCLUSIVE

EW was the first to tell you about Matthew Morrison’s duet with his Glee co-star Gwyneth Paltrow for Morrison’s upcoming album.

Now we can offer you a sneak peak at the results with this exclusive taste of their collaboration on the classic, “Over the Rainbow.” The tune has become somewhat of a staple for Morrison as he performed it during his Glee audition and has also tackled it on the series.

Paltrow, meanwhile, is reportedly working on her own record deal and will be back as Holly Holliday on Glee‘s April 19th episode. The pair’s “Over the Rainbow” will be available to download tomorrow on iTunes and Morrison’s album is scheduled for release on May 10 (you can find the dates for his summer tour here).

Listen below to Morrison and Paltrow’s cover: READ FULL STORY »

On Saturday night, Eric Clapton finished his three-night celebration of the blues with Wynton Marsalis and Taj Mahal at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater.

EW was on the scene at the concert, a disappointingly academic, PBS-ready affair with only a few glimmers of the throbbing passion and anguish that have defined this great American musical tradition. READ FULL STORY »

Jack White Q&A: He talks to EW about life after the White Stripes, becoming a mogul (or not), and more

With the White Stripes officially retired, Jack White could spend his days having cocktails on his tropical lanai if he wanted to. But he is, famously, not that kind of guy.

Instead, he’s running a musical empire in his adopted hometown of Nashville, keeping his hands in two well-established bands (Raconteurs and the Dead Weather), and taking his Rolling Record Store, which he debuted at this year’s SXSW, on the road — while also raising a family and proselytizing for vinyl nearly full-time. EW catches up with him below.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Now that the White Stripes are done, you actually seem more busy than before.
JACK WHITE:
Younger musicians might look at someone who’s quote-unquote “made it,” and think well, that’s it, they won the lottery now they can do whatever they want, and that means go to the Bahamas and just party all the time. But my opinion has always been if you call yourself an artist, you have a responsibility to that liberty that you’ve given yourself.  You don’t have a day job where you work 9 to 5 at a factory because you’re an artist? Well, okay, well then you better make some art. That doesn’t mean you can sit around all day and do nothing. That’s the way I treat myself, and those are the artists I respect who do that. And it doesn’t have anything to do with being a workaholic or anything like that; it’s about creating all the time, because that’s what you can’t help but do.

You have built up sort of a sovereign Third Man nation down in Nashville…
We have a live venue, which is the only live venue in the world where you can record on analog tape in front of an audience and it comes out on vinyl four weeks later. There’s gonna be a lot of special shows on Record Store Day I can’t tell you about yet — I did one with [rockabilly legend] Wanda Jackson. Everyone’s playing there, it’s great for up-and-coming punk bands and all that.

If you’re a producer and a label-runner, does that mean there will there be less music-making for you? READ FULL STORY »

What should surprise 'Idol' castoff Pia Toscano do next?

Pia-Toscano

Now that the shock of Pia Toscano’s dismissal from the ranks of the American Idol finalists has worn off and all her tears are dry, it’s time to face an important question: What is the 22-year-old singer going to do next?

It may seem harsh, but Toscano’s window of opportunity is quite small right now. She’s the talk of the Internet at the moment, but by the time America gets around to voting off another singer next week (and it better be Stefano Langone, America!), she’ll already be forgotten (just ask Naima Adedapo or Karen Rodriguez).

She’s probably fielding a deluge of calls and offers right now, and any decision she makes over the course of the next few days could affect her for the duration of whatever music career sits in front of her.

So what’s a ninth-place finisher to do? Glad you asked.

Prince announces another epic residency on 'Lopez Tonight'

One thing you can safely say about Prince: dude is unpredictable. Sometimes he’ll invite Kim Kardashian on stage with him, only to throw her off moments later (when royalty commands you to dance, you dance, woman).

Other times he’ll record collections of absurdly politicized lit- jazz tunes. And just when you think he has retired to Paisley Park to hide from the world and do whatever it is guys in those houses do, he appears like a magical sprite to announce another big event.

On last night’s episode of Lopez Tonight, the Purple One suddenly appeared out of nowhere to reveal not only that he was going to be playing the show next Wednesday (April 13) but that he was also launching a 21-night residency in Los Angeles. Witness the phone call here:

On the Scene: Nicki Minaj and the Roots play Times Square and geek out hard

Nicki-Minaj

Last night, Nicki Minaj painted Times Square pink.

Accompanied by the Roots, hip-hop’s most fluorescent femme fatale gave a concert at Manhattan’s Best Buy Theatre to launch Casio’s new Tryx camera.  It was a fun, unpretentious 11-song set, culled mostly from tracks off her debut album, Pink Friday.

The Roots kicked off the affair, blasting their comically schizophrenic, funkadelic sounds. After nearly 20 years, the Roots still remain one of the most immersive live acts to witness in person. The sheer number of bodies on stage can be overwhelming—I mean, where do you look? (Okay, to be fair, you’re probably looking at the Muppet antics of the ever mesmerizing ?uestlove on drums.) Britney Spears: Remember when she danced like this?

“I genuinely love what I do,” Britney Spears told MTV last Sunday in a pre-taped special for new album, Femme Fatale.

But lately, it hasn’t been entirely easy to feel that love in Spears’ low-impact live performances (see: Good Morning America) and videos (“Til the World Ends”). Maybe that’s why we found it surprisingly fun, and even a little poignant, to uncover this YouTube flashback (below) of Britney at her turn-of-the-millennium prime: READ FULL STORY »

Kelly Clarkson tears through a medley of hits on 'Ellen': Watch it here

Can you believe it’s been almost a decade since Kelly Clarkson beat out Justin Guarini to become the first American Idol? And can you believe there was a time when “Kelly or Justin?” was actually a valid question?

Still the all-time reigning Idol in terms of worldwide sales and vocal prowess, Clarkson performed a knockout medley of her hits yesterday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Although her upcoming fifth album has been held back until September, the Texas powerhouse wasn’t holding herself back when she ran through “Miss Independent,” “Walk Away,” and “Since U Been Gone” for a lucky Florida crowd. Watch it here: READ FULL STORY »
