Gwyneth Paltrow raps N.W.A. song, hip-hop world doesn't implode as a result

The Graham Norton Show is an institution in the U.K.——a place where celebrities who share the couch with host Norton are often challenged to showing off hidden talents and revealing deeply personal facts about themselves.

Last week, Norton welcomed actress and singer Gwyneth Paltrow to the show, and during a discussion of her musical tastes (which vary wildly, as we well know), Norton brought up that Paltrow is a huge fan of hip-hop.

That revelation isn’t so surprising, especially considering she counts the Carters as personal friends, but she upped the ante by dropping Ice Cube’s opening verse from N.W.A’s statement-of-purpose anthem “Gangsta Gangsta.”

Watch her lay it down, with backing track assistance from Geoffrey Rush and comedian Jason Byrne:

Sadly, Lady Gaga didn’t join the proceedings until after Paltrow’s rap, though she did manage to exchange quite a few bon mots with her.

Paltrow’s performance might be seen as blasphemy, but honestly, it isn’t any more embarrassing than anything Ice Cube has put into the world over the past few years, and he’s the dude who originally wrote the verse.

She does come across as a pretty unlikely rapper (and no matter how much husband and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin associates with Jay-Z, he still isn’t all that street either), but does this officially make her more hood than Natalie Portman?

And which actress will be next to spit some rhymes, perhaps by Public Enemy or X-Clan? Kate Hudson, you’re on the clock.

She needs to just STOP with the music, any music. And she also needs to cut and condition her dry hair.

Except when she doesn’t, which is 99.5% of the time…

    LOL!!!

I think it’s cool that she has varied musical tastes, and why not? I myself have everything from Kanye West, to Arcade Fire, Taylor Swift, We Are Scientists, Nas, Garth Brooks, Lady Gaga, Prince, Queen, AC/DC, Aretha Franklin, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Sleigh Bells, and everything in between. People will find ways to hate on a person no matter what.

I’m pleasantly surprised to see that Gwynnie has diverse musical tastes. Take THAT, y’all who’d think she has only Glee soundtracks and chamber music on her iPod!

Gwyneth can’t touch Natalie Portman. That’s one of my favorite SNL shorts… “I never said I was a role model”

My favourite female rapper is Otep. One of the best rap songs is T.R.I.C.

I really wish Gwynnie would stop trying to prove how “down” she is. She’s still an annoying, boring, pompous wannabe.

one of these days she’s gonna get cussed out by some gangster. Not everyone is so tolerant or the white girl trying to hobknob with the “natives”.

For the record: I posted a comment pointing out that the author of this post incorrectly identified the song (thinking it was ‘Straight Outta Compton’ rather than ‘Gangsta, Gangsta’). I questioned the musical knowledge of the author, but, in accordance with the rules of this blog, kept my language clean and stayed on subject.

I come back a few hours later to find that my comment gone (along with a few replies) and the text “magically” changed.

Oh well, I guess admitting to a correction to original copy (not to mention the courtesy of an acknowledgment) is something they no longer teach in J-schools.

I really used to dislike Gwyneth on a personal level. However, I feel like she’s been much more likeable over the past year or so than she ever was before and my mind has changed completely about her. She seems like she’s relaxing for the first time.

Great article. I cant wait to hear more about your research tool. If it is as good as your other products, then you will have another winner. Your article pretty much summed up what I have been seeing too. Great to see some hard data.
