According to the BBC, the rock legend talked about his former drug problem to writer Robert Shelton in the course of an interview which took place in March 1966. “I kicked a heroin habit in New York City,” Dylan said. “I got very, very strung out for a while, I mean really, very strung out. And I kicked the habit. I had about a $25-a-day habit and I kicked it.”
Shelton would go on to write the the 1986 Dylan biography No Direction Home. He uncovered the interview tape which featured Dylan’s confession while doing research for an updated version of the book.
Of course, it is worth pointing out that the mercurial Dylan’s utterances have at times been more, well, “truthy” than truthful, particularly when the living legend has been discussing his own history. What do you think about this latest revelation?

A musician in the ’60s addicted to heroin? NO! Say it ain’t so!
Well it would explain a lot of his behavior. Kind of a douche (especially toward Donavon in Don’t Look Back).
I find it a bit hard to believe. Not because I find it hard to believe Dylan did heroin, per se. But because if he was truly “strung out” on H, it’s not the kind of thing you could keep a secret from those around you. Yet no one has ever uttered a word of this, despite a zillion books chronicling that period?
Seems unlikely.
Donovan’s crew threw a bottle at Dylan’s. Dylan’s crew confronted Donovan’s and they played music. Dylan’s “It’s all over baby blue” blew away anything Donovan could ever hope in achieving. End of story.
One of entertainment’s greatest, and four comments? Happy Birthday Bob.
Wow. I heard that water is wet.
