Really, did someone write that “gaga is saving the music industry”, Really? Lady Gaga, while having some great songs is just as manufactured as Katy Perry, Rihanna and a lot of other so-callled pop stars.Don’t get it twisted “Paper Gangsta and so happy I could die” are on constant rotation on my itouch, but to claim she saved the music industry is a bit much. How about listening to some ‘Adele’, ‘Jessie J’ or mumford and sons’. Yeah they may not have the same record sales( adele is headed to double platinum), but the vocal talents of those artists do not need to be swept under the rug for the likes of Lady Gaga.

    • Futurama

Gaga writes her songs. Katy Perry and Rhianna do not.

      • Jonathan

Katy Perry most definitely does. It doesn’t mean they are well-written, but she does have that sense of legitimacy.

      • Dave

Katy Perry does indeed write her songs.

      • Danielle

Ummm…you should get your facts straight Futurama. Katy Perry writes most of her own music/songs.

      • REALLY

KATY PERRY DOES WRITE HER SONGS. HELL, ANYONE CAN WRITE A EFFING SONG. WHO GIVES A FFFF….
SO WHAT IF RIHANNA DOESNT EITHER. SHES YOUGNER THAN GAGA, WITH 10 #1 SONGS.

      • PN

Katy Perry co wrote every song on her Teenage Dream album. Lady Gaga co-wrote every song on Born This Way. Rihanna didn’t on her latest album. Some artists do write songs on their albums while others let outside writers handle all the songs and the singer just sings the lyrics in the booth in the studio. You can’t please everybody sometimes with the writing.

    • Jonathan

I agree with Adele and Mumford & Sons, but I thought Jessie J’s album was not good. She’s got a very good voice, but she needs better songs. I’d throw in Robyn instead :)

    • Brian

@taree.johnson Hey F*ck you, Lady Gaga is not manufactured and she is saving the music industry. Adele is an amazing singer, but she’s not as great a performer as Lady Gaga. to even compare Jessie J(a talentless hack) to Lady Gaga who is extremely talented is completely blasphemy and retarded. Gaga can sing circles around Jessie J is not even funny. and Gaga writes all of her music. Jessie J’s voice is beyond terrible. she’ s a terrible singer. she can’t sing for sh*t. and mumford and sons suck big time.

  • taree.johnson

ok..I give you that, but I’m not budging on the idea that she alone is somehow saving the music industry.

  • Sharlin

No one will ever beat NSYNC!!!!!!

  • teana

@ 99 cents is not the same, period. this shows exactly how Gaga achieves fame and records. by pulling a Mariah Carey discount (that’s how she got #1s she kept her CD singles at 99 cents or even 49 cents when the rest where 6.99) and of course she will always be remembered as the Kayne West of Pop. Madonna is still the Queen even when away since Gaga came out..People still bring her out and see cheap Madonna moves in Gaga. MADONNA IS THE UNDISPUTED QUEEN OF POP. PERIOD

  • Dean

    Generic Madonna music

  • baibaiwo

I guess Britney still holds the number 1 spot and it will probably be hers for a long time.
Lets admit it, Gaga is at her peak, not to be mean but she will probably go downhill steadily from here. The buisness is like that, you won’t stay up there for long

  • XTina

Mark my words, GaGa, sales will plummet in the second week.

    • Matt

F*ck you a**hole, GaGa’s sales will rise big time the second week, mark my words.

      • Jonathan

Let’s not be unrealistic; there’s ZERO chance that Gaga will sell more than 1.1 million in her second week. I’m a fan, but when an album is 99 cents for two days, plus given away free with a phone (which counts as a purchase) and these things are no longer occuring in the second week, sales will go down. It’s a fact.

      • Just Me

The free CD’s DID NOT count as sales….It’s a FACT!

    • PN

I don’t think it will plummet. I think it will stay strong, but not at the level of that 1.1 million week. Maybe a 30 to 40 percent drop the second week. Look people were so excited to get the album and that’s her core, loyal fans getting it the first week. The curious as well as people who are hearing her for the first time will buy it in later weeks.

  • Chris

Actually… As far as the whole Gada vs. Tayor comparison goes, Britney Spears beat both Gaga and Taylor Swift… She sold 1.3 Million in one week back in the day… So, they both kinda lost that comparison… And she did it way before buying digital got huge. People still bought whole CD’s for full price back then… Shocking, I know…

    • PN

I think that some people now don’t like how high CD prices are, so they went to Amazon to get Gaga’s album for that low 99 cent price. So the artist wins both ways on the full price and low price ends with the strong sales like what Gaga did. If only Britney Spears would have done this with her new album, she would have matched her 1.3 million of her 2000 album with 2011′s Femme Fatale! Taylor should have done that too, but Gaga beat her to it!

  • Mary

If any of the other female pop divas CD’s were on sale for 99 cents for most of the first week and then went on to sell over 1 million copies GaGa’s Monsters would be cutting them apart.

  • Brother Jerome

    Freakazoid.

I miss the cute kooky girl she once was, but I think her evolution into this hard edged(literally with her prosthetics) creature is just her losing her innocence and seeing the ugly side of fame. She’s a different person with a harder shell and she wants to express that. With her first two records, it felt like everyone was invited to the party. This record is GaGa behind iron gates yelling I love you and waving to the crowd, but you can’t touch her anymore. Born this Way is a bizarre, interesting, sometimes annoying mishmash of eighties sounds- icy German New Wave, Bruce Springsteen earthiness with sax solos, soulful Donna Summer-like vocals, and hair band guitars. She also mixes in electronica and Shania Twain/Def Leppard beats and background singers. You and I could have been from one of Shania’s albums. It’s boldly, intentionally cheesy. I’m disappointed by Born this Way and Judas, but I enjoy Marry the Night, Electric Chapel, Hair, the Edge of Glory, and You and I. With You and I, I keep wishing she didn’t use Mutt Lang as the producer. It’s the best song on the album because it’s so heartfelt, and it’s almost ruined by the overblown production. This record is more of a total experience than her previous two. Some parts entertain me, and some throw me off balance and make me uncomfortable. As a total body of work it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s not a failure either.

    • True Blue

“As a total body of work it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s not a failure either.”

That’s how I feel about the record as well. It’s not a flawless album, but it’s far from crap. It’s a solid album, and hopefully we’ll see her take things to a new level on her next album. Also agree about You & I being the most heartfelt song on the album.

  • jared4ever

Even with the early pirated releases she still kicked ass. Queen Gaga!

  • Listen

I know our country gets dumber by the day, but let’s do something called MATH.

According to the figures, Gaga sold 1.1 million copies. If 440,000 of those were sold digitally for .99 cents, then that means 660,000 albums were sold physically. Let’s say that 10 songs equals one album (I chose 10 because the price would total to $9.99 which is generally the cost of an album at Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and most online retailers like iTunes). So digital album sales would be the equivalent to 44,000 physical album sales (440,000 digital albums/10 songs = 44,000 albums). 660,000 + 44,000 = 704,000 physical albums. Still impressive, but not enough to make history. This is how numbers lie and can be manipulated. She doesn’t deserve the accolade because she didn’t earn it the way those who came before her did. If any of those other artists who have sold over a million first week (Whitney Houston, Taylor Swift, 50 Cent, Lil’ Wayne, N’Sync, Norah Jones, etc.) had their album available for .99 cents, don’t you think their totals would have been in the 2 million (or somewhere close) range?

    • jordan

I agree she didn’t earned it. If Taylor’s or Lil wayne’s album were for sale that cheap. It will go beyond to 2 mills.

    • PN

But this is a big name artist with Lady Gaga. If this was a second tier or lesser known artist, they wouldn’t have sold as big as Gaga did. Gaga used all avenues of media to promote her album and she succeeded.

      • Mike

Fans of other artists including madonna are setting themselves for failure. Even if they get a .99 sale price, it doesn’t mean 1 million sold. Lady Gaga is simply a powerhouse. I can’t wait to see their excuses…lol.

    • jay

BLESS THIS POST!!! TAYLOR ONLY SOLD 44,000 COPIES IN AMAZON FOR $4…AND THE 1 MILLION + IS ALL PHYSICAL ALBUMS SO….YEAH
