The 2011 BET Awards were broadcast on Sunday night from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and the big winner was Chris Brown, who lit up last year’s show with his tribute to Michael Jackson. The event was star-packed with a Who’s Who of R&B and hip-hop celebs ranging from P. Diddy to Justin Bieber to the multi-talented offspring of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The evening of awards and performances (many with bleeped lyrics) kicked off with a medley from Mary J. Blige and a no-hold-barred monologue from host Kevin Hart. The theme of Hart’s schtick was that he was going to dish out some tough love to the assembled stars. And he proceeded to take gentle jabs at folks like Busta Rhymes (for his busy outfit) and Rick Ross (for his flabby man boobs), but seemed to lose his nerve when it came to roasting Diddy.

Kevin Hart, the host, kept threatening to tell it like it was but he never really did! he seemed to lose his nerve early on. I’d give him a C. No one will ever top Chris Rock’s years of hosting the MTV awards. Remember when he was going for the jugular of top stars in the audience. Guess they don’t make em like that anymore!

Kevin is mild as a comedian when compared to Chris Rock.He’s got his own comedic style. But Chris Rock was wilder when he hosted the Oscars one year! He chewed up every actor in the audience! And I remember when Rock chewed up everybody in the audience when he hosted the MTV awards for a few years.

Chris Brown just made some consistent hit records this past year. With Deuces, Yeah 3X (on the pop charts) and Look at Me Now! That’s why he won. I like his album a lot better than the last one. Even though he had this riff on GMA, that didn’t take away from his music. He can be contradicting and arrogant sometimes when he does magazine interviews, but his music has been solid as of late.

The arts (music/acting) have shown prejudice in the past. But today I think their is equality for achievement. The term African American sickens me. Should I say I am French, Irish and Italian American. We are all Americans period. The blues are the basis for all Rock n Roll. Muddy Waters, Albert King, BB King are all amazing. I just listened to a record with Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaugh – that is amazing.
I’m surprised that Rihanna won! That Beyonce late entry into that female artist award failed. They should have put Fantasia in that nomination instead. And even if Rihanna’s album Loud is the most pop sounding album she’s made, good for her for winning in the female category! It’s had a lot of hits. Alicia Keys’ hits-heavy 2009 album had already run its 2-year course, so I didn’t see her winning it. And good for Willow Smith and Jaden Smith to win their first major awards, even if their father Will Smith didn’t put a new album out! They’ve been doing it this year in music and movie platforms!

I’ll say it. If they’re going to have this show, they need to get rid of the movie category. It makes teens look like idiots when Twilight wins all the awards at the MTV Movie Awards, but teens are stupid. Black people are not stupid. I doubt the five movies that most entertained black people this year were For Colored Girls (33% on Rotten Tomatoes) , Death at a Funeral (40%), Takers (27%), The Book of Eli (48%) or Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, Too (27%). When you nominate this crap it makes it hard to take the rest of the show as seriously.

This awards show does what every corporate circle jerk show does: Ignore the majority of the artists in the genre and pick just a few because of payola and kickbacks, not because of talent.
In reality, the producers, not the “artists” do all the work. They have a pre-conceived notion communicated explicitly by the men in suits of what the album should be before a note has been recorded. This leads to a boring product which excites a number of people who like to be told who to be and what to buy. The brainwashing system is so advanced, they should award the psychologists who perform the feat of selling the worst our culture has to offer to unwitting saps.
You buy these generic albums not because it is a good product, but because you have been pre-conditioned to accept a cheaply made and formulaic facsimile of music. The joke is on you. Thanks for helping our country dumb down its music and its culture via music.

Michael Vick played his butt off last fall with the Philadephia Eagles! He is well deserving of that award. Even though his team fell short in the NFL playoffs, he played with dedication and he was team driven with his fellow players in the games.

Justin Bieber’s last album and music had more of an urban R&B /hip-hop sound with a few shades of pop. And some harder edge and beats. He has that Usher-meets-Chris Brown patchwork sound in his music. It’s not that gooey bubble gum pop one would have expected from a teen singer like him. And he’s actually good when he does do songs with either Usher or Chris Brown or Kanye West.

Darius Rucker won a CMA for Best New Artist.
You forgot about Charley Pride from the ’70s. He had 29 number 1 country hits and won numerous country awards. Well received in country music circles and still pulls in fans to his shows years later. Darius Rucker has done very well as a country artist lately. Blacks can sing any genre and win awards in any of those music shows. It’s not so limited to just R&B or doing the latest collaboration.

I don’t think that will work. They tend to have a like or dislike of their artists versus the supportive nature of the minority based awards shows. I see a huge difference sometimes. But all the awards shows are diverse now–there’s not this divisiveness like in the 50s or 60s.

Thank you to someone who mentioned Antron Brown! I watch the drag racing shows on ESPN2 and he has done very well in that sport! Last year at this time in July/August, he won all of the West Coast races for some 3 weeks in a row! So I follow someone in the sports that aren’t basketball, football and tennis. I like Michael Vick, but this was definitely his year. Hope the BET people consider Antron for the sportsman award next year.
