BET Awards: And the winners are...

The 2011 BET Awards were broadcast on Sunday night from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and the big winner was Chris Brown, who lit up last year’s show with his tribute to Michael Jackson. The event was star-packed with a Who’s Who of R&B and hip-hop celebs ranging from P. Diddy to Justin Bieber to the multi-talented offspring of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The evening of awards and performances (many with bleeped lyrics) kicked off with a medley from Mary J. Blige and a no-hold-barred monologue from host Kevin Hart. The theme of Hart’s schtick was that he was going to dish out some tough love to the assembled stars. And he proceeded to take gentle jabs at folks like Busta Rhymes (for his busy outfit) and Rick Ross (for his flabby man boobs), but seemed to lose his nerve when it came to roasting Diddy.

Here’s a rundown of the evening’s major winners:

  1. -Best Male R&B Artist: Chris Brown
  2. -Best Female R&B Artist: Rihanna
  3. -Young Stars Award: (tie) Jaden and Willow Smith READ FULL STORY »

Cee Lo Green is doing himself (and supposedly his fans) a favor and stepping down from his duties as opening act on Rihanna’s LOUD tour.

Green, who was taking bouncing between his duties as a coach on the smash NBC music competition The Voice in L.A. and as Rihanna’s opener in cities all over, apparently will just be too busy to give the top-notch performance many would expect of him.

But since The Voice is wrapping up their first season next week, the question is what will be tying up the Gnarls Barkley singer’s time? Well, his people told the Los Angeles Times that he’ll be recording a new album and working on a book.

So simply put: Cee Lo didn’t want to spread himself too thin. He’s got better things to do other business to attend to. Sad Green won’t be holding Rihanna down on the remaining dates of her tour? Let us know.

Selena Gomez's 'Love You Like a Love Song' music video: Watch it here

With pop music, you know what’s fun? Watching a starlet come into her own. And that’s exactly what’s happening with Disney delight and Justin Bieber love Selena Gomez, who just released the video for her newest pop jam, “Love You Like a Love Song,” from her latest album, When the Sun Goes Down.

From the start—which finds a hugely, beautifully coiffed Ms. Gomez being called up on stage at an Asian karaoke joint to sing her song the clip is pure candy, a light-and-fluffy treat. She has a lot of fun with the karaoke theme, as we see her morph through several different, visually stunning scenes during the song, with lyrics on the screen to boot.

My favorite Selena iteration? When she’s singing/riding in the convertible with her James Dean-ish man, mostly because of the seriously sultry cat-lady glasses she wears. (There’s some other killer eye wear in the clip, too.) The whole thing just screams: Fun!

Stephen Colbert debuts 'Charlene II (I'm Over You),' drops single on iTunes

All this week, Stephen Colbert has been presenting music-themed editions of The Colbert Report in a series he dubbed “StePhest ColbChella,” featuring a number of great performances and a multi-part package about his visit to Jack White’s Third Man Studios in Nashville.

On Thursday night, the series concluded with Colbert’s performance of “Charlene II (I’m Over You),” the sequel to the stalkeriffic song the host first delivered in 2006. He was backed by the Black Belles, a mysteriously well-dressed goth garage group also signed to White’s record label.

In fact, Colbert is now an official member of the Third Man roster—”Charlene II (I’m Over You)” is currently available on iTunes and can also be purchased on vinyl. Check out Colbert’s live run through “Charlene II (I’m Over You)” after the jump.

Rihanna furious with MTV Canada over erroneous Chris Brown report

Though they have both gone out of their way to put the incident behind them, neither Chris Brown nor Rihanna have been able to shake the long shadow of Grammy night 2009, when Brown assaulted his then-girlfriend.

The latest resurrection of the story comes care of MTV Canada, who felt the wrath of Rihanna after they reported on a tweet that showed up in her Twitter feed on Thursday morning.

The tweet (which was revealed to be fake) read, “I admit, I provoked Chris to hit me. It was not entirely his fault. #ImSORRY.” A handful of sites reported on the message, but Rihanna zeroed in on the article posted on MTV Canada’s news site (which has also disappeared), tweeting “are u f—ing kiddin me?????? You’re supposed to be a RELIABLE source for news on music and this is the bulls— u post?”

In response, MTV Canada sent out a defense tweet, saying “We were reporting on a story that was posted on several sites today. We had no intention to be salacious.”

This isn’t even the first Twitter-related incident involving Rihanna and Brown this week. A tweet recently showed up in Brown’s feed that was addressed to Rihanna and said “You got that pic I sent you?” Fans went crazy thinking that the two had been in contact, and the tweet was reported on several websites, but Brown later deleted the message and corrected people, saying “Don’t listen to the blogs. Stop tryna make a story out of nothing.” (That message has also been deleted.)

The lesson in all this? Both Rihanna and Chris Brown should let their tweeting fingers take a rest for a good, long while. All it seems to do is create problems for them, and if their feeds are that easily hacked, it’s probably not safe for them to continue using the service anyway. Don’t you think, readers?

Justin Bieber gets tackled during fragrance unveiling in New York

Justin Bieber is diversified, which keeps the teen titan in the black but also apparently forces him to learn a little bit of jujitsu.

During an appearance at Macy’s in New York City to present his brand new fragrance (which is cryptically called Someday), he was accosted by a man who hopped a barricade outside the store.

According to the local New York ABC affiliate, Bieber was holding court inside the store but decided to head out onto the sidewalk to shake some hands and sign some autographs for the thousands of tweens who gathered to get a glimpse of the him but were denied entry into the store.

Bieber took a swing back at the man, who has not been identified, and was not hurt in the incident. UPDATE: According to new reports, the man in question was a plainclothes police officer who was attempting to help the singer and was restrained by Bieber’s bodyguards.

You can track the brief altercation in the video after the jump, but be warned that it’s taken from quite a distance (though it really captures the size of the crowd) and contains a lot of NSFW potty-mouthed narration from the knuckle-headed videographers.

It’s been nearly six years since rapstress Missy Elliott released her last album The Cookbook, leaving many of her fans wondering when its follow-up is dropping. Now Elliott has revealed to People that she’s got a more serious issue to deal with: her health.

Elliott, 39, told the magazine that she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an incurable disorder that affects the thyroid, in 2008.

“I was [driving and] trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn’t keep the brake down and almost crashed,” she said of the ill effects the illness had on her in the beginning. “I couldn’t write because my nervous system was so bad—I couldn’t even use a pen.”

This apparently isn’t the only revelation we’ll be getting from the artist either. Missy also mentions that she’ll be the focus of the June 29 season premiere of VH1′s Behind the Music, where she’ll reportedly speak on being molested as a child.

After being found guilty in February for conspiring to deal cocaine, reggae superstar Buju Banton (né Mark Myrie), 38, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, Yahoo reports.

The Jamaica native was given the lowest sentence possible for his crimes, conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, and using a telephone to facilitate a drug trafficking offense.

“The days that lie ahead are filled with despair, but I have courage and grace and I’m hopeful, and that is sufficient to carry me through,” he said in the statement. “The man is not dead. Don’t call him a ghost.”

Prior to being found guilty in February, Banton scored a controversial win at the Grammys for Best Reggae Album for Before the Dawn.
