Odd Future duo Mellowhype get horrorific in church: Watch their '64' video here

For a group that refuses to be boxed into a genre of any sort, Odd Future sure seems to love horrorcore imagery.

In the video for “64,” Odd Future subsidiary Mellowhype’s new single, the duo takes us to church. But not as we know it—making it a haven for zombies, snakes, and talking corpses.

Sure, the clip is straightforward hip hop first. But one viewing reveals some pretty obvious references to the horrorcore genre.

Cat eye contact lenses? Check. Crawling zombie girl in a nightgown? Present. Evil pastor? He’s there. Not to mention the snakes slithering over Hodgy Beats and his biblical references (“My bedroom’s Jerusalem/ And I’m Judas”). Check it out: READ FULL STORY »

NKOTBSB at IZOD center: Crotch grabbing, happy fans, and...Naughty by Nature?

“It took us 14 years but we did it,” a girl said to her friend, as waves of women filed out of the IZOD center in East Rutherford, NJ, last night after nearly three hours of musical time travel (two stops: 1989 and 1999) courtesy of NKOTBSB, a.k.a. New Kids on the Block + Backstreet Boys.

It hadn’t been long since I last indulged my inner teen; I attended my fourth Backstreet Boys concert at Hammerstein Ballroom last year. But last night’s supergroup affair was, frankly, super. And though the crowd was comprised of more New Kids fans than Backstreet, it didn’t damper the show.

I had heard of some tour stops turning sour because of fan wars, but there was no such pettiness last night—thanks mostly, I believe, to the concert’s structure. After a intro with both groups, New Kids came on stage with “Summertime,” and Backstreet followed with “The Call.” Then New Kids returned with “Dirty Dancing” and so on. The tag-team performances were jarring at first, but if in doing so their intention was to bridge the gap, then mission accomplished. This Backstreet fan left the show a little bit more of a New Kids fan than I was when I walked in. READ FULL STORY »

Bad Meets Evil, 'Hell: The Sequel': The EW Review of Eminem's latest project

bad_meets_evil

Below, find an expanded version of the review out this Friday in EW’s print edition:

Recovery saw Eminem finding the more dynamic moments hidden between his blasts of bluster. Sure, there was still an awful lot of shouting, but even full-throated rage-athons like “Cold Wind Blows” allowed a lot more Marshall Mathers to show off his full skill set while Slim Shady was catching his breath. It was a revelation that lead to the best work of his career.

Hell: The Sequel, his release under the moniker Bad Meets Evil (a tag-team with friend-turned-foe-turned-friend-again Royce Da 5’9″), finds Em returning to mostly eye-popping intensity. That doesn’t necessarily make Hell: The Sequel a step backwards—Em remains the finest battle rapper on the planet and proves that he’s the Michael Jordan of MCs (in the sense that he turns Royce from a perfectly acceptable spitter into a lyrical beast, especially on the hard-hitting single “Fast Lane”).

The pair spew acid-tongued battle raps that shout down celebrities (Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber join the hit list) with obsessive conviction, and though they spend most of their time boasting about their greatness, they manage to do it with enough invention to keep it fresh; the brevity of the EP keeps it from overstaying its welcome.

They even leave room for two breaks in the action: The first comes in the form of the Bruno Mars-produced pop nugget “Lighters,” which makes the rest of the EP’s dark leanings all the more fulfilling, while the second drops in on the album-closing “Loud Noises,” allowing Shady Records signees Slaughterhouse do most of the driving and spins the bombast in a more sideways direction).

Unlike some previous Eminem releases, there are no greater statements embedded in Hell: The Sequel, but it does serve to remind the world that Eminem remains one of the best rappers alive. As Jay-Z once said, sometimes the world needs a reminder. B+

Justin Timberlake on his music career: 'I don't have a single song ready to go'

Justin-Timberlake

Currently, there is no shortage of Justin Timberlake in show business. The guy is headlining two upcoming comedies (Bad Teacher and Friends With Benefits) and just recently ruled one of the best episodes of Saturday Night Live in a long time.

But if you love JT for his elastic pipes and sweet dance moves, you’re probably pretty bummed, and you’ll stay bummed for a while.

“I don’t have a single song ready to go,” Timberlake recently told Playboy. “People keep asking me when a new song or album is coming out, and I don’t know what to say. Music is not my focus right now. It may be someday. It could happen next month or next year but right now it’s not where it’s at for me.” READ FULL STORY »

Bonnaroo producers confirm second death at this year's festival

Categories: Bonnaroo

After opening the festival with the tragic news that 32-year-old Beth Myers had passed away on the camp ground, Bonnaroo officials confirmed that a second person died at this year’s four-day Eminem-headlined extravaganza in Manchester, Tennessee.

Producers announced that 24-year-old Christopher Yoder of Raleigh, North Carolina died of hyperthermia after being airlifted to a local hospital. That’s not an unusual affliction, especially considering temperatures ran well into the 90s for the duration of the festival (though the results of a toxicology test could reveal more about Yoder’s passing). Myers’ cause of death had not yet been announced; an autopsy was ordered to determine cause of death.

“The safety of our patrons is our No. 1 concern, and we are deeply saddened by this,” the festival organizers said in a statement. Yoder’s passing marks the tenth death in Bonnaroo’s 10-year history.

Kanye West track 'Mama's Boyfriend' leaks, rapper unleashes childhood hate for those eyeing his mother: Hear it here

Nearly a year after Kanye West debuted the lyrics to his spiteful single-parent jam “Mama’s Boyfriend” at Facebook’s headquarters last July, the track–which didn’t make the cut for 2010′s acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy–leaked online last night.

“It took me 32 years of my life to write it,” Kanye said of the soulful College Dropout-esque track last year. “It means a lot to me.” It’s obviously one that hits close to home for West, who was mostly raised by his mother after his parents divorced.

Written from the perspective of a child, he attacks any guy trying to be his mom’s new man on “Boyfriend.” Even back then, Kanye knew what strategies grown men would use to get her.

After reportedly suffering through a brief bout with food poisoning, it appears Selena Gomez is ready to perform again.

Yahoo reports that the actress and lead singer (naturally) of Selena Gomez and the Scene checked into a L.A. hospital on Thursday, June 9, following an appearance on The Tonight Show. But today on her Facebook page Gomez expressed her excitement to get back onstage to begin her 10-city tour.

“Feeling much better, thank you all for being so understanding,” she wrote. “Can’t wait to see you all today at Santa Monica Place for the Monte Carlo kick off.”

Today’s show makes up for the one she missed last Friday due to her illness.

UPDATE: People is reporting that at the Santa Monica concert, Gomez told reporters, “I was just very malnourished, so I was low on iron and exhausted.” She thanked her fans for coming, and sang “Who Says” and “A Year Without Rain.”

Lady Gaga speaks out at massive Europride event in Rome: Can she meaningfully affect gay rights? -- VIDEO

lady_gaga_rome

Thousands of Little Roman Monsters put their paws up on Saturday night. That’s because Lady Gaga performed at Europride, the annual, pan-European gay pride event held this year in the Italian capital.

For Gaga, who has dedicated herself to gay rights on stage and off, Europride became an especially personal affair. In a nearly twenty-minute speech she gave before performing heartfelt acoustic renderings of “Born This Way” and “The Edge of Glory,” she not only proudly identified her Italian heritage, but did something highly unusual for Gaga: in front of thousands at the ancient Circus Maximus she called herself by her birth name, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta.

Check out the video of her speech and her performance here: READ FULL STORY »

last-friday-night

“Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” is the fifth single from Katy Perry’s 2010 album Teenage Dream, and so far the acompanying videos have featured aliens, giant anthropomorphic gummy bears, lots of heavy petting and, um, fireworks.

Perry’s latest clip raises the bar considerably, featuring the debut performance by Perry’s alter-ego Kathy Beth Terry but also welcomes “Friday” expert Rebecca Black, the three members of Hanson, two stars from Glee, Corey Feldman and Debbie (Deborah?) Gibson to the party (not to mention several dozen extras as well as a copy of Just Dance for the Wii). Check out all the neon-colored action after the jump.

As Lady Gaga tweets her support for ill Clarence Clemons, we look back at the Big Man's extraordinary career

Lady Gaga has tweeted her support for Clarence Clemons, following the news that the famed saxophonist suffered a stroke over the weekend at his home in Florida.

The 69-year-old Clemons, a four-decade member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and the go-to sax man for countless other artists, had been particularly active lately, appearing on two singles—“Hair” and “The Edge of Glory”—on Gaga’s Born This Way, and performing with the pop star at the recent American Idol finale.

“Little monsters, my very close friend +musician on The Edge of Glory, Clarence Clemons is very sick,” the singer tweeted earlier today. “Can we all make some get well videos?” Of course, Clemons’ collaborations with Gaga are just the latest chapter in the storied career of the artist who has also worked with Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, Jackson Browne, and, yes, a certain Boss man, to name but a very few.
