The Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am forgets lyrics, but cell phone saves his 'Party' verse

Imagine being a superstar, performing on stage in front of thousands nightly. You’d probably want to know the lyrics to your tunes like the back of your hand, right?

Well, the Black Eyed Peas‘ will.i.am, usually on-point with his rhymes when it’s go time, dropped the ball recently during a taped performance of “Don’t Stop the Party” on French television  show Taratata.

Luckily, his smartphone saved the day; still, points were definitely deducted from what could’ve been a great showing. Check out Will’s quick-save method after the jump.

Woman found dead at Bonnaroo camp ground

Filed under: Music and tagged:

Tragedy hit this weekend’s Bonnaroo festival today, as the festival’s organizers confirmed the death of a 32-year-old woman at the Manchester, Tennessee music event’s camp ground.

The cause of death had not yet been determined. The woman—whose name has been withheld pending notification of her family, but has been identified as having lived in the Pittsburgh area—was found by her friends on Thursday night (June 9) at the camping area.

It continues an uncomfortable trend of casualties at music festivals, especially at Bonnaroo. This represents the ninth death in the festival’s ten years, including the 2010 death of a man from Wilmington, North Carolina, who passed away after having a stroke on the grounds.

Drugs tend to come into play with festival-related deaths (21-year-old Ben Muller died of a drug overdose at Coachella in 2008), while others simply seem to stem from pre-existing health conditions (a 39-year-old man passed away at Lollapalooza in 2009 following a heart attack).

However, the heat almost certainly exacerbates these things; the man who passed away at Bonnaroo last year was found to have a core temperature of 108 degrees.

Bonnaroo began on Thursday and will continue through Sunday night, featuring sets from the likes of Eminem, Lil Wayne, Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons.

Move over, Glee—there’s a new musical-TV competitor coming, and it goes by the name of Smash.

That’s right: NBC’s Broadway-set series is poised to give FOX’s behemoth singing series a run for its money in the genre with its own Glee-style production numbers woven into its storylines.

And now, NBC has signed a deal with Columbia (the same label that releases Glee‘s music) to produce a soundtrack for the show. The announcement came with a bonus: Smash‘s star, American Idol season 5 runner-up Katharine McPhee, has also signed a solo record deal.

Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. team win at Brooklyn, NY show, in spite of rumors and inflated expectations

There’s an ugly sense of entitlement in New York City when it comes to expectations of hip-hop concerts. For lack of a true term, let’s call it “That’s all?” syndrome.

First off, let me explain what my idea of a good concert is. You, the customer, get an energetic, quality performance from the headlining artist—one worthy of the dollars spent for the evening. Sounds good, right? Wrong! Well, not in New York, at least.

Last night, Kanye West was the man of the evening in Brooklyn, New York, hosting the Heineken Red Star Access G.O.O.D. Music concert and showcasing his talented roster of G.O.O.D. (Getting Out Our Dreams) acts. Yes, Kanye West—the man who’s worked with everyone from Nas to Madonna, and is currently wrapping up a highly anticipated album with Jay-Z.

And there lies the problem, folks. A concert that in no way suggested it would be a “Kanye and his celebrity friends” event was clouded with that very idea. Twitter buzzed with rumors and hopes of Jay-Z dropping in for a surprise appearance. The two were “supposed” to announce the release date for their collaborative effort, Watch the Throne.

So by the time Kanye finally stepped on stage just after midnight, dressed in black from bandanna to designer shoes and with several Jesus pieces dangling from his neck, everyone in Skylight One Hanson (a gorgeous venue, but an acoustic nightmare) knew that they’d be in for a treat bigger than just Kanye and the G.O.O.D. team.

Wombats

Diplo is the American superproducer behind such dancefloor-filling hits as M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” and Santigold’s “Starstruck.” The Wombats are a trio of Liverpudlians who craft bright, buzzy indie pop concoctions that have made audiences on both sides of the Atlantic shake and swoon. And now, the two camps of jet-setting soundsmiths have come together.

In fact, Diplo got his hands on the Wombats’ new single “Techno Fan” (from their 2011 album This Modern Glitch), and the resulting piece of beat science can be found below in an exclusive Entertainment Weekly premiere. Follow the jump, turn up your speakers and clear some floor space:

For Shania Twain, the road back to musical relevance has been long and arduous one, as we’ve recently seen in the country superstar’s painful story of betrayal — and its aftermath – told in detail on Oprah; in a shocking tell-all book, From This Moment On; and on her OWN reality show Why Not? Katy Perry adds another layer to her alter-ego in new video preview for 'Last Friday Night (TGIF)'

katy-perry_3001.jpg?w=300&h=296

Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce. Jennifer Lopez sometimes becomes Lola. Nicki Minaj needs a family tree to track her alter egos (including Roman Zolanski and Harajuku Barbie).

Clearly, to be a dominant woman in music today, you have to have more than one personality, and Katy Perry has dipped her toe in that world via her nerdy other half, a 13-year-old braces-wearing girl named Kathy Beth Terry.

Equal parts Joan Cusack from Sixteen Candles and Amy Poehler’s “Kaitlin” character on SNL, Kathy Beth Terry has already appeared in a teaser for the video for “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” (not to mention that single’s cover art), and now she’s in a video that gets a little more inside the personality of Terry. Watch it here:

James Franco adds 'experimental electronic musician' to his giant resume

James-Franco

OK, James Franco. We get it. You are bionically high-achieving.

You go to school, you teach, you write, you act, you paint, you host award shows, you are an excellently homicidal soap-opera villain. You’re willing to give stuff a try, and that’s noble, but it got ridiculous about 67 projects ago.

And now you’re going to drop an EP of experimental electronic tracks with drag performer Kalup Linzy (who acted alongside Franco on General Hospital)?

It’s called Turn It Up and it’s set to drop July 12. In fact, there’s even a little snippet of a song called “Broken”:
