30 Seconds to Mars cover U2 for 'MTV Unplugged': Watch the EXCLUSIVE VIDEO here!

There are a handful of necessary elements that go into any great edition of MTV Unplugged.

There should be acoustic instruments, of course, but there should also be an almost uncomfortable level of intimacy between the artist and the audience (who always seem to be sitting extremely close to the action). And for it to become truly memorable, there should be at least one cover song thrown into the mix (or, if you’re Nirvana, covers should make up half of your set list).

For their Unplugged debut, 30 Seconds to Mars delivered all of the above, including a pretty stellar run through U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” (for which they also invited a gospel choir). You can check out Jared Leto and friends’ exclusive performance of that U2 classic after the jump.

In addition to channeling U2, 30 Seconds also knock out quieter takes on their bombastic hits like “Kings & Queens” and “Hurricane” for their episode of Unplugged. You can catch the entire performance starting tonight (Tuesday, July 19) at 8 p.m. Eastern, both on MTV’s home page and on Starburst’s Facebook page.

Do you have any favorite MTV Unplugged performances or moments? Obviously, the Nirvana episode is legendary, though the episode featuring Hole has always been underrated (Courtney Love’s assaults on “Drown Soda” and “Best Sunday Dress” could be her best live performances ever). Let us know your personal Unplugged highlights in the comments.

I always think Maxwell’s Unplugged version of Kate Bush’s classic song “This Woman’s Work” should be held up as a fantastic standard…gives me goose bumps.

    • ginad

I totally agree. I’m not a huge Maxwell fan, but that song gives me goose bumps too.

I like the cover…but then, I like 30 Seconds to Mars.

I think one of the best Unplugged performances ever (save Nirvana) was Dashboard Confessional. I thought their set was amazing. Some bands just have a better ability to go with acoustic instruments and good voices.

That was pretty awesome. I have listened to 30 Seconds to Mars on the radio, but I think I am going to have to go and buy their album. I’m impressed.

The first Unplugged that always comes to mind for me is LL Cool J. One of the first times I remember seeing a rapper with a live band really tear it up. And he had those little white squiggly things in his armpits…his deodorant?

  • conorcass

Yeah this was good, but Nirvana covering Bowie’s The man who sold the world surely has to be the best

I love 30 Seconds to Mars. They have a great style and a good eye when it comes to performing. Have you seen their music videos? They’re beautiful, directed by Jared Leto himself. I also love U2. And I know 30STM will put their own twist on it like they did to Bad Romance by Lady Gaga. I can’t wait, I hope they live up to my expectations.

Pearl Jam. Porch. The whole band ends up rocking out. Eddie writing on his arm, the extended vocals before the final chorus. Made me love this song and PJ.

Another good one. He almost falls off the chair, but you can tell he is totally in the moment.
