Leona Lewis may or may not have stolen her new single 'Collide': Listen here and decide

Leona Lewis has had a hard time trying to get back to the Oprah-approved level of success she attained with her smash single “Bleeding Love” a few years back, and her latest single “Collide” isn’t going to do her any favors.

For one thing, it is not awesome: EW’s Tim Stack declared it “a misguided dip into dance-pop” that “lands with a major thud” in his review of the track, which appears in the forthcoming issue of the magazine. (In other words, it’s no “Buffalo Stance.”)

But the other thing that may stand in her way is the fact that she has been accused of stealing the track wholesale from dance artist Avicii. They have had a track called “Penguin” that has been circulating for a few months, and Lewis’ “Collide” is little more than her singing over their track.

Lewis addressed the issue (on Twitter, natch). “With regards to my song, avicii was aware & agreeing publishing splits for himself and his manager,” Lewis wrote. “When avicii sent his track out to have a song written over it I totally fell in love with this version and i think he’s super talented.”

However, according to Avicii (again, via Twitter), that was all news to him. “To answer everyone, the first time i heard leona lewis collide was today,” Avicii (né Tim Bergling) wrote. “I didnt produce it and neither me or my manager could approve it.”

Bergling even addressed a pair of tweets directly to Lewis, including an invite to clear the air. “Since we never met or even spoke, please let me and my manager know who told you that and what confirmation they gave you,” he wrote.

Follow the jump to hear the two songs.

The punchline of this story is that neither Lewis nor Avicii can claim the rights to the melody. As Bergling pointed out on Twitter, his track sampled a tune called “Perpetuum Mobile” by Penguin Cafe Orchestra (according to Bergling, though, he went through proper channels to clear the sample).

This seems like an awful lot of hand-wringing for two songs that land so squarely on the side of not good at all, but let us know what you think of this fiasco in the comments.

She’s done. The hype of Cowell’s big “discovery” has waned and she’s just no big deal after all.

Bleeding Love is a great song. And she has a great voice. I miss her.

If this were 1996, Leona would be giving Celine a decent run for her money BUT her adult contemporary sound isn’t drawing any younger listeners b/c it’s boring. It sounds like something from the late 90’s. She has a fantastic voice but she needs better material. Otherwise, her music and Pia Toscano’s new song “This Time” will be played only on light rock stations.

Leona Lewis’ new song reminds me so much of what Donna Lewis was doing in the late ’90s with this light sounding dance pop. But not trying to be groundbreaking. This song by Leona Lewis kind of takes a minute to build in interest. It does sound too 1996 or 1997 to me.

Is it just me, or is this song trying to be Alexis Jordan’s “Happiness” and overwhelmingly failing?

If that happened, Leona Lewis needs to get more original with the songs and producers that she records with. She can’t sound like someone else. I’m surprised that she’s riding on that dance pop trend after relying on ballads on her first two albums as singles.

Honestly, I am not very impressed with the song. Leona has had so much potential, and yet her songs now sadly feel like a whimper.

Sorry Kyle, you can say what you want about Lewis’s “Collide” (although it’s not nearly as bad as you make it out to be) but dissing Avicii’s “Penguin” is, well, just wrong!! That song is awesome and BPM (on Sirius) plays it all the time.

Well, I like Leona’s song. I don’t know why it’s so hard to get things cleared or to MAKE SURE they get cleared though…especially if you’re releasing something as a single.

Fade Into Darkness is not Avicii’s best, but it is a good song and has been circulating since last Novemeber when Pete Tong played Avicii’s Essential Mix on Radio One. It’s a great electro dance song for people who are fans of the genre. If you want quality Avicii, I suggest you check out Le7els, Bromance, Blessed, and Hang With Me…and I am probably missing a bunch of others. Bottom line, Syco stole this from Avicii. Leona’s song will tank because of the bad press, as it should. I am sure it is not Leona’s fault – it’s Simon Cowell and the producer Sandy Vee. And, if they did have permission from Avicii to use the beat, I would assume Avicii would have been more than happy to produce it rather than have someone else do it. Smells like a load of BS coming out of the Lewis camp…

avicii penguin isnt a finished song thats the problem he was shopping out vocals for months trying to finish the song and she did it without his permission herself. its out now and its better.

    ‘Collide’ Will Be #1 !
We Will Never Know FOR SURE If Syco Stole The Track & Used It Without Permission. But I Believe Leona More Then Avicii’s. But Avicii Sent His Song To Every Record Label In Existence, So He’s Gotta Expect Artists To Lay Their Vocals On It And Release It & Simon Wouldn’t Risk Stealing The Track, Just For Leona To Fade Away In The Industry! Plus Leona Said Herself Avicii Will Get Half The Earnings & Credits When Its Released! All This Hype Has Got Outta Control. Dont Forget She’s Got An Album Coming Out In November! Avicii Needs To Move On & People Should Stop Dissing Leona!

I Do Agree Simon Is Kinda Slacking With Leona Now & Its Kinda The Same With Every Artist He Has. But Thats Just Him! But To Leona HE IS MAKING A MASSIVE MISTAKE! He Wuld Regret It If Leona Fell Flat On Her Face. Leona’s Talent Is Far More Important Then His Precious Earnings. Her Feelings Are Involved Here. Money Is Nothing!

  • J Hall

I don’t feel the song is goood enough for Leona, we are used to better, she has an amazin voice and that’s what we want hear, I hope the album is not all dance music, but we still love her.

  • Feeny

Totally stolen. This is happening more and more often–mainstream taking from lesser known artists from the house/electronic genre since they have the major labels (like SONY in this case) to back them up if any legal action were to take place. Chris Brown – Yeah 3x from Calvin Harris, Beyonce heavily sampled (bought rights though) from Major Lazer, Black Eyed Peas from Boys Noize. Nothing nowadays is original material and it sucks that Leona and her label will most likely get away with everything. She’s an amazing singer but I’ve lost a ton of a respect for as a person to buy into her label’s crap. Avicii’s been working up a vocal mix to his Penguin song for MONTHS and even released it (Fade Into Darkness); albeit it being unofficial. Utterly ridiculous.

To be fair to Leona, this is not been comfirmed as the US release. This song has only started to premier throughout Europe and it will do really well in Europe, and has been getting amazing reviews. There is a planned second single coming soon after this which will no doubt be more suited to the US.
