What’s the best revenge on a bad ex-boyfriend? How about performing your kiss-off song while standing in your bridal suite wearing nothing but a white lace teddy and a grin of deep satisfaction? That’s how the music video for Beyoncé’s new single “Best Thing I Never Had” opens, and damn if Ms. Knowles isn’t at her peak — in voice, in looks, in taste in opulent wedding gowns (by Baracci Beverly Hills). Check out the video below, directed with impeccable lighting by Diane Martel, and then let’s discuss it a bit more!  READ FULL STORY »

Adele, Katy Perry help music sales go up for the first time in seven years

Adele

At the halfway point of 2011, it shouldn’t be surprising that Adele’s 21 is the top-selling album of the year. But did you know that thanks to that big boost, alongwith solid entries by the likes of Lady Gaga and Mumford & Sons, album sales are actually up for the first time in seven years?

According to the mid-year report published by Nielsen SoundScan, a few more than 155 million albums have moved in the first six months of 2011, compared to the just under 154 million that sold during the same time in 2010. That’s a whopping one percent gain!

It’s always good to be up, but considering album sales have been in total freefall for years (at this time last year, sales were down 11 percent compared to the same time in 2009), there was really no place to go but up.

There are some real reasons to celebrate, though. READ FULL STORY »

The Music Mix Recommends: U.K. dark-rock quintet The Horrors, now all prettied up

The-Horrors

A curious thing has happened to The Horrors. The onetime goth-shoegaze outfit just released 10 surprisingly lovely new tracks from their upcoming album Skying online—and suddenly, they sound anything but horrifying.

The uplifting Skying, slated for a U.S. release on Aug. 9, marks a serious departure from their previous two albums, 2007’s Strange House and 2009’s Primary Colours.

Gone are the eyeliner-heavy zombie gazes and song titles like “Death At The Chapel” and “Jack The Ripper,” replaced by stylish, mesmerizing janglers like “You Said” and “Changing the Rain.” READ FULL STORY »

After cancelling a Louisville concert on Saturday, Taylor Swift today nixed three more gigs this week due to bronchitis, according to her website. The country-pop star was advised by doctors to postpone concerts this week in Charlotte and Atlanta, though she still plans to perform in Montreal on July 14. The Charlotte show on July 8 has been pushed to Nov. 16; the Atlanta concerts on July 9 and 10 have been moved to Oct. 1 and 2. (The Louisville show will take place on Oct. 11.) Swift is currently touring the world in support of 2010′s now somewhat ironically titled Speak Now.

Former Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams releases new single 'Love Gun': Listen here

The three former members of Destiny’s Child are keeping busy these days.

Beyoncé just topped the Billboard 200 with her latest release 4; Kelly Rowland has been doing well with the release of her single “Motivation,” featuring Lil Wayne; and today, Michelle Williams dropped a new single,”Love Gun,” which is set to be included on her upcoming fourth studio album, slated for a fall release.

While Williams focused on gospel on her first two solo albums, the synth-laden “Love Gun” has a similar vibe to the dancey tracks on her last album, Unexpected, which spawned two hit dance singles in “We Break the Dawn”—actually, a personal fave of mine—and “The Greatest.”

Williams calls “Love Gun” “inspirational pop.” “Think of Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’ or Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten,’” she said in a statement. “Music with a message but at the same time fun and will get people dancing.”

Give “Love Gun” a listen here:

Beyonce tops Billboard albums chart -- but marks her lowest debut as a solo star

Beyoncé, unsurprisingly, leads the Billboard 200 albums chart this week with her fourth album, 4.

What should raise a few eyebrows, however, is that it sold 310,000 copies—her lowest opening yet as a solo artist. Her 2003 debut Dangerously in Love opened with 317,000 albums.

Considering that 4 has yet to spawn a hit single, the numbers actually do make sense, though. Her first pitch, “Run the World (Girls),” failed to crack the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, marking the first time that a lead single from Beyoncé didn’t jump into the top 10.

For comparison and contrast, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way debuted with a robust 1.1 million (with the caveat that her sales were significantly goosed by a 99-cent Amazon price run) and Adele’s 21 bowed with 351,000 albums.

Adele’s 21 continues to hang in some five months after its release, jumping back up one spot to No. 2, with 92,000 units sold. At No. 3 is Kanye West protege Big Sean’s debut album Finally Famous, with 87,000 sets bought.

Check out the rest out the top 10 after the jump.

Noel Gallagher announces solo album details, talks fight with Liam: 'He was like Randy Savage'

Oasis guitarist and chief songwriter Noel Gallagher has announced that his debut solo CD, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, will be released in the United States on November 8.

According to the Guardian, at a press conference today in London, England, Gallagher said that while the CD was not “stadium rock,” he believed it would appeal to fans of Oasis, who famously and acrimoniously split in 2009.

Gallagher has already recorded a second collection, an as yet unnamed collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous (a pseudonym of British electronica act The Future Sound of London), which will be released next year.

At the press conference, Gallagher spoke about the Oasis breakup and recalled a confrontation with his brother and former bandmate Liam, during which the latter wielded a guitar “like an axe.”

The guitarist also compared his brother to the recently deceased wrestler Randy Savage. According to Noel, “He was quite violent. At that point there was no physical violence but there was a lot of World Wrestling Federation stuff, he was like Randy Savage or something. It was an unnecessarily violent act and he nearly took my face off. I was like, you know what, I’m f—ing out of here.”

Federal prison inmate Clayton Hill told HipHopDx.com recently disclosed that he believes he knows who murdered iconic rapper The Notorious B.I.G., then 24, March 1997.

Hill, a onetime member of the Nation of Islam, claims that he met with a man named Dawoud Muhammad shortly after in Atlanta at Muhammad Mosque #15 and was given the gun used to kill B.I.G. (real name: Christopher Wallace), making Hill an accessory to the crime.

“[Dawoud Muhammad] stated to me that he was on the run for the murder [of Wallace],” Hill says. “He disclosed that he was the shooter of The Notorious B.I.G. because he was a former Blood gang member and was paid to do so.” Hill plans to release an e-book, Diary of an Ex-Terrorist, about his time with the Nation of Islam. Pia Toscano signs with Interscope Records

Looks like Interscope chairman and American Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine really took those “I’ll Stand By You” lyrics to heart. A spokesperson for Pia Toscano confirmed to EW that the season 10 ninth-place finisher has signed a recording deal with Interscope Records. Her debut album will come out later this year, and her first single, “This Time” — an acoustic guitar and beat-driven track by Ester Dean — will drop July 12 just in time for Toscano to perform it as part of her set on this summer’s American Idols LIVE! tour.

As long as this album isn’t called The Princess Pia, and as long as white jumpsuit enthusiast (saboteur?) Gwen Stefani isn’t costume-directing the cover, I am PUMPED about this news. You?
