Robyn covers Coldplay's 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall': Listen to it here

I thought Robyn’s cover of “Since U been Gone” was my favorite song cover the Swedish songstress had ever done, but then I heard her take on Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.”

Love is a strong word, but I don’t hesitate using it in this case. She gives the band’s latest hit what can only be described as “the Robyn treatment,” and it has left me in a state of synth-pop euphoria.

Could this cover (which she did for BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge) be a hit for Robyn? I think so. Listen and weight in! READ FULL STORY »

Family and friends mourned the loss of British soul singer Amy Winehouse this morning in London, England.

The Associated Press reports that Winehouse’s parents and brother attended the Jewish funeral. In addition to family, attendees included Mark Ronson (who handled production on Winehouse’s Grammy-winning breakthrough Back to Black) and friend Kelly Osborne, who wore her hair in a beehive as a tribute to Winehouse’s signature style.

“Goodnight, my angel, sleep tight. Mummy and Daddy love you ever so much,” said father Mitch Winehouse to his daughter, who passed away on Saturday of as-yet-undetermined causes at the age of 27.

The service concluded with a rendition of Carole King’s “So Far Away,” which was one of Winehouse’s favorite songs. Winehouse was then moved to Golders Green Crematorium, where she was cremated.

Winehouse’s father Mitch released a statement about the last time he spoke to his daughter, which you can read in full after the jump.

Cee Lo Green announces new Goodie Mob album, because he is not at all busy

Cee Lo Green is slowly morphing into the hip-hop James Franco.

Not only is the “F— You” singer still promoting his excellent 2010 solo album The Lady Killer (he’ll be performing the single “Bright Lights Bigger City” at WWE’s SummerSlam show on August 14), but he has also expressed interest in doing another project with Danger Mouse as Gnarls Barkley and is apparently going to be setting up a residency in Las Vegas. Oh, and he is also one of the key players on The Voice (also known as The Only Reason To Watch NBC Anymore).

So even though he had to bow out of his opening slot on the Rihanna tour due to his over-extended schedule, Green is still pushing ahead with yet another project. (And no, he will not be appearing on General Hospital.) Luckily, this one is a home run—the Atlanta native tweeted yesterday that not only would the new Goodie Mob album drop this fall, but that it would be called We Sell Drugs Too.

Along with Outkast, Goodie Mob (consisting of Cee Lo, T-Mo, Big Gipp and Khujo) helped launch the Dirty South revolution in ’90s hip-hop, introducing elements of back-porch grit and gospel-tinged soul into an often stagnant rap universe overcrowded with Diddy productions. READ FULL STORY »

Amy Winehouse album sales surge following her death

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Since Amy Winehouse died on Saturday, fans have been honoring the British singer by playing her Grammy-winning neo-soul watershed Back to Black, giving the album a posthumous spike in sales.

Within hours of her death, Black climbed all the way to No. 1 on the iTunes charts in the U.S. and the U.K., and stayed there until Monday. (Today, on the U.S. side, Eric Church tops the chart, with Winehouse holding the No. 2 spot.)

Billboard also predicted that, due to sales from over the weekend, Black will re-enter the top 20 on its Billboard 200 albums chart—which comes out on Wednesday and reflects the sales tracking week that ended on Sunday night—with as many as 20,000 – 25,000 copies sold in the U.S. That’s a big jump from the week before Winehouse passed, when Black moved just a little over 1,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Though Black was a major breakthrough for Winehouse, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in March of 2008, just after the singer performed on the Grammys via satellite from London and walked home with five statues, Winehouse never released another album.

Several reports noted that she’d been working on a follow-up, recording in the Bahamas and London, and London’s Daily Telegraph reported Monday that her unfinished third album could be released posthumously. While it is believed that Winehouse only recorded demos, sources told the newspaper that there was plenty of material available for another album.

Haley Reinhart signed to Interscope Records

She’s weird and she’s wonderful — and now she’s got a record deal, too! American Idol contestant Haley Reinhart has officially been signed to 19 Entertainment/Interscope Records, a rep for the label confirms. Haley, who slinked and growled her way through constant criticism and into third place during the most recent season of Idol, is currently working on a debut album.

The deal marks yet another achievement in what has been a particularly good year for Idol contestants who didn’t take the crown. Runner-up Lauren Alaina was quickly signed to Mercury Nashville Records following the completion of the show, and ninth-place finisher Pia Toscano, who, like Haley, nabbed an Interscope deal, has already released a debut single, “This Time.”

This deal makes a lot of sense: Adele is dominant right now, and in the wake of Amy Winehouse’s tragic death, people are all the more reminded that they enjoy female singers with a good bit of raspy soul. Haley Reinhart would fit right into that niche.

It has been over four years since Leslie Feist, one of Canada’s most beloved aughties-indie exports, dropped The Reminder, her breakout album aided by the colorful iPod-ad-assisted phenomenon “1234.”

Now she’s is back with a new album called Metals, and today she announced that it will be hitting store shelves both real and virtual on October 4. The album’s 12 songs were co-produced by Feist, Chilly Gonzales, and Dominic Mocky Salole (her longtime partners in crime) and multi-talented Icelander Valgeir Sigurosson (who has worked on a number of different projects, including Bjork’s Medulla).

She’ll be uploading video previews on her official site leading up to the release of the album, and in the one featured after the jump, you can see her and her collaborators working through one of the new tunes. READ FULL STORY »

Beyonce set to perform on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' this Thursday -- EXCLUSIVE

Jimmy Fallon‘s adding a heavy dose of girl power to his Late Night show this Thursday: Beyoncé.

On July 28 Queen B, who’s out promoting her latest album 4, will hit the stage to sing “Best Thing I Never Had,” and she’ll be backed by Jimmy house band The Roots.

It’s a great booking for both Jimmy and Beyoncé. Fallon shows he can roll with the Lenos and Lettermans when it comes to booking top-tier talent, And Bey shows that Oprah farewells and major award shows aren’t the only things she’ll get out of bed for.

I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings to Fallon; will she crank things up like she did at the 2011 Billboard Awards? Or take it down a few notches and do something a bit more intimate? Will Questlove get a slow dance? We’ll see.

Excited for Thursday night’s show? Let us know.

Mariah Carey on the Home Shopping Network: Two hours distilled into four golden minutes -- watch the video here

It’s been a little heavy around here the past few days. But luckily, there is a lamb-sprinkled rainbow cutting through the darkness, and her name is Mariah Carey.

Carey is not just a singing superstar. She is a retail wonder—one capable of putting clothes on your back, baubles on your ears, and “a cocktail of explosive fruity sensations” in the air around you.

With so many things to sell (jewelry, fragrances, purses, shoes and the like), it’s no wonder Mimi took up a two hour block on HSN this past Sunday night. In her first major appearance since the birth of her twins, Carey was in rare form, complaining about her pregnancy, directing traffic with special guest (and husband) Nick Cannon, ordering around the HSN models, and generally acting like Mariah Carey.

And while the entire broadcast was more or less wall-to-wall magic, the good people at Jezebel have condensed Carey’s appearance on HSN into a four-minute blast of free-association highlights. Follow the jump to bask in the awesomeness of Mimi unleashed:

Adele has paid tribute to Amy Winehouse, who was found dead at her home over the weekend.

In a statement on her website, Adele—who, like Winehouse, attended London’s BRIT performing arts school—says that the singer “paved the way for artists like me and made people excited about British music again.” The “Rolling In the Deep” star also says she doesn’t think Winehouse “ever realised just how brilliant she was.”  The statement is headlined “AMY FLIES IN PARADISE X.” Read it here in full: READ FULL STORY »
