According to police officials in London, the autopsy performed on late singer Amy Winehouse (who passed away Saturday at the age of 27) returned inconclusive results, and no cause of death has yet been established.

They are now awaiting the results of toxicology tests, the results of which should be back in two to four weeks. Since police have determined there was no foul play involved in Winehouse’s death, her body was released to her family shortly after the conclusion of the autopsy. Her parents are reportedly planning on a private family memorial for her as soon as possible, perhaps as early as tomorrow.

Fans continue to gather at the makeshift memorial set up for Winehouse across the street from the home where the Grammy-winning singer lived. Her father, Mitch Winehouse, addressed the crowd and thanked them for their outpouring of support. “Amy was about one thing and that was love,” he told the group. “Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well. I can’t tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier for us.”

Russell Brand on his friend Amy Winehouse: 'She was a f--ing genius'

Amy Winehouse’s passing has inspired a number of famous friends and admirers to voice their sadness over her untimely death over the weekend. Among those (including some from collaborators Mark Ronson, Tony Bennett and the Dap Kings), the most indelible tribute has come from an unlikely but fitting source: Actor and comedian Russell Brand.

In a long blog post titled “For Amy” that appeared on the Get Him to the Greek star’s official site, Brand (who has famously grappled with substance abuse himself over the course of his life) wrote of how universal the arc of addiction is: “When you love someone who suffers from the disease of addiction you await the phone call. There will be a phone call. The sincere hope is that the call will be from the addict themselves, telling you they’ve had enough, that they’re ready to stop, ready to try something new. Of course though, you fear the other call, the sad nocturnal chime from a friend or relative telling you it’s too late, she’s gone.”

Of his friend Winehouse, he worte: “She wasn’t just some hapless wannabe, yet another pissed up nit who was never gonna make it, nor was she even a ten-a-penny-chanteuse enjoying her fifteen minutes,” he wrote. “She was a f—ing genius.”

Brand first saw the young Winehouse perform at a Paul Weller concert, an experience he recalled vividly.”From her oddly dainty presence that voice, a voice that seemed not to come from her but from somewhere beyond even Billie and Ella, from the font of all greatness,” he recalled. “A voice that was filled with such power and pain that it was at once entirely human yet laced with the divine. My ears, my mouth, my heart and mind all instantly opened. Winehouse. Winehouse? Winehouse!”

According to Brand, who has been sober for eight years and who still attends AA meetings, Winehouse’s death should serve as a wake-up call to how people treat addicts. “Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today,” he wrote. “We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. … We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care.”

Amy Winehouse autopsy scheduled for today

Filed under: Music, News and tagged: , ,

An autopsy on Amy Winehouse, who was discovered dead in her north London home on Saturday, is scheduled for today, though results of a full toxicology report will take weeks, according to Reuters. After conducting a post-mortem examination into the singer’s death, the coroner’s office told reporters that police investigated the scene and determined it “non-suspicious.” Winehouse has a long history of drug use, but police are saying there was no sign of drugs in her house.

The funeral could take place on Tuesday, according to the AP.

Winehouse’s father, Mitch, visited a fan-made shrine outside the residence on Monday, and thanked fans and the media for their consideration and condolences.”You people in the street, I can’t tell you what this means to us,” he told the gathered crowd. “It’s really making this a lot easier for us. Amy was about one thing, and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family, and her friends, and to you guys as well. We’re devastated and I’m speechless. But thanks for coming.” READ FULL STORY »

Taylor Swift thanks Newark crowd for 'insanely loud shrieks and screams'

Being a parent can be challenging. But there are perks as well…like, say, taking your 8-year-old daughter to a Taylor Swift concert so you don’t look like a creepy middle-aged dude bopping up and down by yourself alongside tween girls in homemade “TS Rules 4Eva!” t-shirts. Thankfully, my daughter Violet is a huge fan, enabling me to go to Swift’s Sunday night show in Newark, New Jersey under the guise of parental superstar, when in reality I was pretty excited to attend myself. It wasn’t just the show I wanted to see (although I do dig Swift’s music). It was also the spectacle around the show. READ FULL STORY »

'Rehab' band Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings pay tribute to Amy Winehouse

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Following the sad passing of Amy Winehouse today — the singer died of unknown causes at the age of 27 — Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (and the entire Daptone Records Family) released a statement lamenting her loss. The band, who backed the singer in two of her most popular tracks, “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good,” issued the following message: “We are very sad to have lost Amy Winehouse today.  She was one of a kind and we were fortunate to have had the chance to make music with her.  She was always gracious and a pleasure to work with in the studio and on the road.  She brought a lot of people joy with her voice and her irreverent personality.  It is a tragedy that she was taken from us so soon when she had much more music to give.”

Though she only had two albums to her name at the time of her passing, singer Amy Winehouse made a deep impression on the pop culture universe thanks to the worldwide phenomenon that was her Grammy-sweeping 2006 album Back to Black.

For the better part of two years, Winehouse appeared on magazine covers, in concert, and all over television and radio promoting her album, which bridged the gap between old school soul, classic lounge attitude, and post-modern feminine toughness.

A series of self-destructive patterns followed her in the years hence, but Winehouse’s time at the top of the world still stands in these five great video moments.

It’s almost enough to make you believe in numerology. Amy Winehouse’s death today — at 27 — makes her the sixth rock star to die at exactly that tragically young age.

The founding member of the “Forever 27 Club,” as it has come to be known, was ex-Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones, who was discovered dead at the bottom of his swimming pool in East Sussex, England, on July 3, 1969. The Coroner’s report ruled it “death by misadventure.” Jimi Hendrix died about a year later — at 27, too — in a London hotel room on the morning of September 18, 1970, after combining too many sleeping pills with too much red wine. Janis Joplin, 27, was found just two weeks later dead inside her psychedelically painted Porsche in the parking lot of the Landmark Motor Hotel in Los Angeles. The cause of her death was ruled a probable overdose of heroin.  READ FULL STORY »

Amy Winehouse, gifted Grammy-winning vocalist, frequent tabloid subject, passes away

Amy Winehouse was one of the most successful and critically lauded British vocalists of all time. The singer, who has been found dead at her home at the age of 27, released just two CDs during her tragically short career, but sold millions of albums around the world and was a multiple Grammy winner. Although her troubled personal life often threatened to overshadow her musical output, Winehouse would also prove to be a huge influence on a generation of British female artists like Adele.

Amy Winehouse was born in London on September 14, 1983, and attended the BRIT performing arts school, whose other other students have included Adele and Leona Lewis. Winehouse was raised listening to veteran, jazz-inclined singers such as Dean Martin and Julie London and the singer’s love for that era of music could clearly be heard on her debut CD Frank, which was released in the UK in October 2003 to frequently ecstatic reviews. In an early profile of the singer in the London Times, writer Dan Cairns described the album as a “staggeringly assured, sit-up-and-listen debut, both commercial and eclectic, accessible and uncompromising, the kind of record that people will still be playing far into the future.” Frank was shortlisted for prestigious UK Mercury Music Prize and also earned Winehouse, who co-penned the majority of the album, an Ivor Novello songwriting award.
