Barbra Streisand sets a six-decade record on the pop charts. Can anyone match her?

When Barbra Streisand’s 48th album (not including the 12 soundtracks she has sung on), What Matters Most: Barbra Sings The Lyrics Of Alan and Marilyn Bergman, debuted in 4th place on this week’s Billboard 200 chart with sales of 68,000 copies, she became the first solo artist to earn a top five debut in six different decades.

Streisand first entered the Billboard chart in 1963, with The Barbra Streisand Album, which debuted at number eight, but it wasn’t until The Second Barbra Streisand Album‘s number-two bow later that year that she first cracked the top five. Since then, the Broadway belter has notched an additional 17 top five debuts, and impressively, she’s scored 31 top ten debuts overall. (For perspective, Frank Sinatra has 40 top ten albums, the Rolling Stones have 36, and The Beatles have 30.)

Unfortunately, Streisand couldn’t surpass Game, Jay-Z and Kanye West, or Adele to add another number-one album to her collection. Since, according to chart expert Paul Grein, “Streisand is the only solo artist who has had a #1 album in each of the last five decades, from the 1960s to the 2000s,” if she can pull out another chart topper during the 2010s, she will extend her record to six decades.

But I shouldn’t be raining on her parade! The reality is that Streisand’s chart power has endured for a whopping 48 years, an incredible feat in any industry, much less the here-today-gone-tomorrow music scene.

Few artists can claim that kind of longevity, and it is to Streisand’s credit that she has remained a notable and lucrative commodity. I guess it helps having talent!

Are you a loyal Streisand consumer? Did you pick up her latest album?

Lady Gaga got so into Jo Calderone that she wore a fake penis at the VMAs

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

Though her performance may have been confusing and long-winded (not to mention not entirely original), you have to give Lady Gaga credit for her show-length turn as alter-ego Jo Calderone during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. As many people pointed out, it was probably the longest she has ever kept the same outfit on, and she managed to keep up the attitude throughout the show (though her Karate Kid accent was sort of all over the place). The whole thing even earned the approval of LGBT advocates.

Most of all, she definitely inhabited the male-ness of her persona. In fact, according to a scoop from the fine folks at Us, she was so method that she actually wore a prosthetic penis underneath her pants. She did do an awful lot of crotch grabbing over the course of the show, and apparently she actually had something to hold onto (though to be fair, her hand drifts towards her groin even when she’s in lady mode).

Gaga has always played around with gender, and this is hardly the first time she has been thought to have something swinging between her legs. Remember all those rumors about her being a hermaphrodite? And she famously donned some very visible strap-on junk for a photo shoot for Q magazine in Britain. So while the two-and-a-half hour shape-shift into Jo Calderone was new and bold, it wasn’t the first time she has packed a little extra heat.

Does the prosthetic penis change the way you thought about the Jo Calderone character? And, more importantly, what’s next for Lady Gaga? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

The Jersey Shore's Pauly D working on an album with 50 Cent: You ready to fist pump?

Filed under: Music and tagged: , ,

Pauly-D

Jersey Shore’s Pauly D recently revealed that he plans to do more on the music front than just DJ.

“I’m focusing on music. That’s my passion,” he told Billboard of his future plans. “I’m working with 50 Cent now.  I’m going to do an album with him. It’s going to be a little bit of everything. It’s almost like DJ Khaled and kind of David Guetta but my own DJ Pauly D style.”

There was a time that news like that would elicit shock and awe from me. Something like, “I can’t believe a reality TV star is putting out an album!!!”

But I’m all screamed out. This stuff happens often. Also, it must be noted that Pauly actually has a skill. DJing is no joke craft. He’s currently holding court on Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale tour. Whether he’ll be a talent gatherer with a good ear for music like DJ Khaled or a gifted, hit-making producer like Guetta remains to be seen, though.

For now, I’m going to save my voice, because, hey, he might know what he’s doing. Working with 50 is a good start, too. He definitely knows a thing or, um, 50, about big albums, great songs, and singles.

What do you guys expect from Pauly D’s forthcoming project? Looking forward to fist pumping to his beats? Let us know.

Jack White, Insane Clown Posse, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart walk into a bar... No really, it's actually happening

jack-white-icc

That sounds like the beginning to a filthy joke about powdered wigs and Faygo, but those three parties are actually getting together for what should be a wild collaboration.

According to the greatest press release ever written by a human, band collector/empire runner Jack White will be producing a new version of a forgotten Mozart ditty called “Leck Mich Im Arsch” (which apparently translates to “Lick Me in the A–” — as Amadeus proved, Wolfie adored a good bawdy joke). To execute the song, White has called on fellow Detroit natives Insane Clown Posse to add new lyrics to the melody that will be played by Nashville garage-metallers JEFF the Brotherhood.

The track will be available on September 13 both digitally and as a seven inch single (it wouldn’t be a White production without some level of vinyl scarcity). The b-side will be a song called “Mountain Girl,” which is apparently an ICP rap about a shotgun wedding and meth addiction.

We haven’t heard the song yet (there is some sort of small preview here), but obviously it’s one of the most awesomely unusual tag-teams to come up in a while. UPDATE: OH WOW.

Then again, considering Alice Cooper is working with Ke$ha and Kid Rock has teamed up with just about everybody, maybe slightly crazy people from Detroit are destined to work in unusual pairings.

Readers, what do you think?

Rapper Clifford “T.I.” Harris is a free(r) man, released from prison a month before his scheduled late-September discharge date.  The Atlanta native left the Forrest City Correctional Facility in Arkansas early this morning.

T.I., 30, and wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested September 1, 2010, on suspicion of drug possession during a traffic stop in Los Angeles, violating the terms of his probation following his term behind bars for a 2008 weapons conviction.

This morning’s leave ends his 11-month sentence. MTV reports that he’s on his way to a halfway house, though his publicist would only confirm that he’s left jail.

In any case, T.I. is glad to get back to his family and work.

“Feels great to be back where I belong…Back in the arms of those who need me the most,” he tweeted at 9:30am today.

“The storm is over & da sun back out,” he continued. “IT’S OUR TIME TO SHINE SHAWTY!!!!! Welcome to the beginning of our Happy Ending!!!!”

With a new album, Stronger, due Oct. 24, and its first single “Mr. Know It All” freshly released just yesterday, Kelly Clarkson is officially ready for her 2011 closeup.

That wasn’t quite the case earlier this summer, when a number of songs—many of them old, written for other artists, and not at all intended for the final tracklist of Stronger—leaked online without her knowledge or permission.

Clarkson recently described the feeling to EW, saying, ““Oh my God, have you ever been robbed? I have. I’ve been physically robbed a couple of times, but this is much worse.”

Thankfully, she’s now got happier things on her mind. Among them? Talking to EW about some of the songs that shaped her as a woman and as an artist.

You can find some of her favorite picks in the issue of EW on stands until this Friday, and read on below to learn even more about the soundtrack of Kelly Clarkson’s life: READ FULL STORY »

What's your song of summer 2011? Tell us here

LMFAO_240.jpg

Ever since Memorial Day, LMFAO have been everywhere. They were djing the Video Music Awards. They were serenading every actor and supermodel on the CW network. They were so busy dominating Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with “Party Rock Anthem” that they managed to turn “party rock” into a noun, adjective, verb, and adverb.

So is it fair to say that “Party Rock Anthem” was the song of the summer? Hell party-rockin’ yes!

Or no, depending on your tolerance for that perpetually-psyched dancing robot guy. But whether or not you’re an LMFAO fan, there were many contenders for song of the summer in 2011.

Among the ubiquitous radio singles: Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (TGIF),” Hot Chelle Rae’s “Tonight Tonight,” Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks,” Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory,”  Britney Spears’ “I Wanna Go,” Maroon 5′s “Moves Like Jagger” (feat. Christina Aguilera), Bruno Mars’ “The Lazy Song,” Black Eyed Peas’ “Just Can’t Get Enough,”

The club tracks: Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything,” Rihanna’s “Cheers (Drink to That),” Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now” (feat Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes), Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “Otis,” Big Sean’s “My Last” (feat. Chris Brown), Meek Mill’s “Imma Boss” (feat. Rick Ross), Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci,”

The slow-burners: Lil Wayne’s “How to Love,” DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One” (feat. Rick Ross & Drake), Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem,” Miguel’s “Sure Thing,” Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood’s “Remind Me”

The shoulda-been hits (a.k.a. the stuff I’m adding to the list just because I love it): Dierks Bentley’s “Am I the Only One,” Martin Solveig’s “Get Away From You,” Ida Maria’s “Cherry Red,” Wild Flag’s “Romance,” The Knux’s “Run” (feat Kid Cudi), Swizz Beatz’s “Everyday (I’m Coolin’)” Eleanor Friedberger’s “My Mistakes.”

What am I missing? Tell us your favorite songs of the summer in the comments below.

Kelly Clarkson debuts new single, 'Mr. Know It All': Hear the first song on her upcoming album 'Stronger'

Filed under: Music and tagged: ,

Kelly Clarkson’s got a lot of amazing love songs — but she’s also the samurai of shooting guys down, telling them “I Do Not Hook Up,” “You Thought Wrong,” and even just “Don’t.”

So we were excited to hear that the new single from her album Stronger (which comes out Oct. 25) is called “Mr. Know It All,” and you can hear her call this bad guy other names (Mr. Play Your Games! Mr. Bring Me Down!) by clicking here to play the song on her official site, or checking it out below:  READ FULL STORY »

Drake talks about making his upcoming album, growing as a rapper, and finding a mentor in Stevie Wonder: An EW Q&A

drake

The summer’s nearly over. But rap wiz Drake is feeling the heat. The deadline to submit the final version of his sophomore album, Take Care, is one month out. To say the least, it’s crunch time. Though, it seems he’s comfy in the clutch.

While holed up in his “quaint” Toronto studio recently, Drake checked in with EW to give us a progress report on the album, due on his birthday, October 24. Creatively, he says he’s “at a great place” and has a tons a recorded material to select from.

In the EW story on stands now, he gave us five recording rules to live by. Here, though, we get into the rest of the conversation—one that includes, among other things, how Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album impacted his project, how his song with Stevie Wonder might make you shed a tear, and why you won’t hear him crying about his riches this go around.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: In what ways are you challenging yourself this album?
DRAKE: I push myself in a lot of aspects when I write a song. I write a piece and where most people would stop and say “Oh, that’s the hook right there,” I’ll move that to the first four bars of the verse and do a new hook. That makes the song easy to learn and catchy. That’s how I like to challenge myself. I’ll write something and everyone that’s around might be like “Oh that’s that hook right there.” And then I’ll write something better than that.

How many tracks are you shooting for here?
Obviously, I can only fit so many songs on a CD. So what I’m doing is there will be a Take Care physical edition in stores that’ll hopefully have 15 to 17 songs on it. Then I know a lot of people do deluxe editions. But since October 24 is a special day for me, I got, like, a Take Care birthday edition that I’m going to put on iTunes that will have extra songs. I really want to encourage people to be excited about the album releasing. I remember how excited a lot of artists used to make me. I used to want to buy the physical copy to see the artwork. And if there were any bonus tracks, I’d go find them. I’m definitely trying to cause some of that excitement. I hope people go get the songs off the birthday edition. It’s going to be great, man. I’ve got a wide array of music this time. I’m very excited.

Talk to me about your team. Who are the people who are helping guide you through the album?
There are about three or four major opinions that I respect. Obviously, the main one would be [engineer and producer] 40 (Noah Shebib). He’s worked with me every single night I’ve set foot in the studio since Comeback Season. He knows what I’m capable of and he’s not afraid to say “You can do that better” or “That’s it” or “I know you can write a better verse than that.” And Oliver El-Khatib, who has progressed from my friend who just used to advise me on how to dress to a guy who came up with the artwork for So Far Gone to, since he’s such a creative brain, that he’s become one of my managers. Then my DJ Future the Prince has a great ear for music. And probably the most important person in the equation is Hush, who is a friend of mine who grew up rapping in Toronto and he’s present every night. If anyone knows what I’m capable of, it’s Hush. We love rap the same way and we have the same exact ear. So I know he’s hearing what I’m hearing. I never take criticism personally from anyone. I love feedback, but especially when it comes to Hush. He understands rap probably better than anyone else I mentioned. And he’s a close friend of mine.

Rap has become like fast food. Fans want it quickly and a lot of it. It’s only been a year since Thank Me Later and your fans seem to be starving for Take Care. Do you think they’ve forgotten that artists need life experiences to craft their art? READ FULL STORY »

Beyonce's pregnancy reveal breaks Twitter record: Why do we care so much?

Beyonce-pregnant-VMA

When Beyoncé unbuttoned her purple sequined jacket Sunday night at the MTV’s 2011 Video Music Awards and revealed that she has something baking in her oven—her first child, to be exact—the building roared in celebration.

If you weren’t at Nokia Theater L.A. Live to experience it in person, the next best thing was logging on to your choice social network and shooting off your reaction. For millions, Twitter was their first destination.

Techland reports that fans hopped on the medium to express their shock, happiness, and such at a rate of 8,868 tweets per second. That beats news of Osama Bin Laden’s death in May, which drew in 5,106 tweets per second, and the Super Bowl, which earned 4,064 tweets.

Crazy, right? The question is why did so many people care so much? Well, for one, people looooooove them some Beyoncé. She’s a major pop star who, unlike most of her peers, has managed to steer clear of celeb shenanigans. Add the fact that she’s married to Jay-Z, arguably the best rapper ever, and that they both keep the details of their life together on the hush-hush and bam, here’s the answer: We’ve never seen them so excited to let a secret out of the bag! Watch them let it go after the jump:
