Amy Winehouse was not going to adopt a 10-year-old child, says rep

As is common whenever a celebrity of her magnitude passes away, there has been a steady cavalcade of rumors floating around about Amy Winehouse.

Over the weekend, news started surfacing that Winehouse was in the process of adopting a 10-year-old girl from the island of St. Lucia (where Winehouse had spent quite a bit of time) when she died. A British newspaper spoke to the girl and her grandmother, both of whom said the plan was in motion and that both of the girl’s parents had signed off on the idea. There was even a photo of Winehouse and the girl that floated around online.

But according to Winehouse’s rep, there’s no truth to the story (celebrity site Gossip Cop first reported the rep’s denial of the story on Sunday). While Winehouse did meet the girl in St. Lucia, there were no plans for adoption.

Another story that broke over the weekend claimed that the next James Bond film would feature Winehouse’s music in it, though considering that film won’t even start shooting for another few months, it’s unlikely they have come close to making any decisions about the soundtrack. In fact, while several reports have surfaced about Winehouse’s unreleased music, there still remains no concrete plan to put anything out, though there are a number of demo tracks that exist that could be cleaned up for posthumous release.

There are a few stories that are true: Winehouse’s father Mitch did give away a bunch of his daughter’s clothes to fans gathered outside her home, and Amy’s music has in fact skyrocketed up the charts, with Back to Black sitting in the number one spot in the U.K. this week and also in the top 10 in the United States.

And Mitch Winehouse met with British politicians earlier today to discuss the possibility of setting up a drug rehab center in Amy’s memory. Expect more rumors surrounding Winehouse and the legacy she left behind to continue in the coming weeks and months, but just remember to take them all with a fistful of salt.

This story reeked of opportunism so I’m not surprised to see it’s false.

Agreed, Marissa. The opportunists who were leaching off her weaknesses during AW’s like are still out there, even after her death. Her parents seem real, caring, and loving through the whole ordeal–and it’s so moving to see how sad they are and touched by true fan expressions of sympathy and love. I believe that the real Amy–the young unblemished girl in the photos of her youth–would as a “clean and sober” adult in recovery would approve of her family’s generosity to fans and young people in crisis. The tiny pink ballet slippers tucked into Mitch Winehouse back pocket made me gasp to witness the potent eloquent grief of a fellow parent.

The chances of Amy Winehouse adopting a child were about the same as those of Casey Anthony!

  • Mr. Yes

It is my understanding that she was going to adopt a 10-year-old scotch.

    • Mr. No

      No.

none of this discussion is really even relevant anymore, is it?

    • Meli

And yet you felt it was relevant enough to actually comment on it, didn’t you?

  • Phil

Whoever in their right minds thought Winehouse would be adopting anyone into her care, is obv. seriously deluded and possibly on the same crazy train she lived most of her life & should seek help.
Sidenote, as a fan, one particular Winehouse song that never got any attention was a pre- “Nothin’ On You” B.o.B. collaboration entitled “Grip Ur Body” from 2008 in which Amy’s vocals are used on the hook. Its actually a great song, and NOT on B.o.B.’s debut. It is on iTunes on his “12th Dimenson” EP. So if you are a fan of hers or B.o.B.’s, or both…ENJOY!

Amy Winehouse was not going to adopt a 10-year-old child? Thank God for that! How could someone who acts like a drunken 10-year old child raise one?

  • Lynne Ellis

It is such a loss to have another brilliant talent gone. It is pure speculation that fuels peoples desire to criticize one of the worlds’s greatess unknown musical genuises. I will miss Amy’s talent as should everyone else instead of finding it necessary to degrade her they should mourn our loss.

Good job Team EW – lower down on your front page at ew.com, the headline is “Amy Winehouse Was Adopting Child”. EW, keeping the facts out of the news.

  • Dave

She was supposed to record a theme song with Mark Ronson for the last Bond movie (Quantum of Solace), but they never finished the track and Ronson had commented that Amy wasn’t ready to be recording music at the time, probably because of her drug and legal issues.

  • Jack Scoggins

Amy Whitehouse needed to adopt a drug and alcohol counselor.

How is this even relevant anymore in today’s world?

    She killed herself.

    Get over it.

And anyone who bought her records, directly and monetarily, as well as spiritually, supported her killing herself.

Those who bought and liked her music, may as well have killed her themselves.

Her fans kept her monetary kitty full of drug and alcohol money.

Her fans are the ones responsible for killing her.

    Some adoring fans huh?

    • adam

Guaranteed you have supported an artist that at some point in their lives had a drug or alcohol problem.

      • Gabby

Agreed. Jack, get off your high horse.

  • The Real Slim K

Why couldn’t it have been Bono? Jack Scroggins might not have liked that, but I would have.

Well, this just looks ridiculously out of place without the spam comment that was obviously deleted.
