Kanye West drops 'Watch the Throne,' but not before comparing himself to Hitler

When he woke up this morning, rapper/producer/provocateur Kanye West probably expected there to be a lot of headlines about him flying around the Internet. And while there are plenty of people writing breathlessly about the arrival of Watch the Throne, his long-awaited album-length collaboration with Jay-Z, West is grabbing just as many Internet eyeballs because of his comments at the Big Chill festival in the U.K. over the weekend.

On Saturday night, West paused in the middle of his set to rant about how much people dislike him and how persecuted he always feels. “I walk through the hotel and I walk down the street, and people look at me like I’m f—ing insane, like I’m Hitler,” he told the crowd. “One day the light will shine through and one day people will understand everything I ever did.” That day will remain in the distant future for the people in attendance, who booed West for comparing himself to the architect of the Third Reich.

It seems like West is saying that he is hated as much as people hate Hitler, which seems hyperbolic even for him. Also, it probably isn’t even true. We haven’t done any sort of research on this, but we imagine Hitler’s approval rating is still way lower than Kanye’s, even though the former has been dead for six decades.

Of course, the crowd might have also been upset because West was a half hour late arriving to the stage, though he managed to get everybody back in his good graces when he went blamed the media for driving celebrities to early graves. “Thank you for protecting your artists that are still here,” he said. “This is for [Alexander] McQueen, for Amy [Winehouse], for Michael [Jackson] and for all the media, can you lighten up on all your artists that are still here?”

West has apparently been watching a lot of sternly-narrated documentaries about World War II, as one of the hooks on Watch the Throne contains a reference to the Holocaust. “This is something like the Holocaust/ Millions of our people lost,” he raps on “Who Gon’ Stop Me.”

A theory: Perhaps West is merely at his craziest during the final days of summer every year. After all, the MTV Video Music Awards (where West made one of his more notorious appearances two years back) are just around the corner.

Hitler? geez, I don’t know. I’ve always viewed Kanye as a verbal Larry Flynt with expensive samplers and computers for his “music”.

No honey, people look at you like you’re a douchebag. And a whiny one to boot.

Kanye comparing himself to Hitler just reminds me of the Garfunkel and Oats bit – Who said it? Kanye or Hitler. Awesome stuff.

      • m

Yes! I love me some Garfunkel and Oats.

I’m just wondering if all the spam comments work? Whenever I see one of those comments, I skip right to the next one. They can’t be working. Well, maybe for idiots.

    • Sid

He seriously needs to get a grip on reality.

    • Rush

Yo, I’m reelly happy fo you and Imma let you finish, but, Stalin was the best homicidal megalomaniac dictator of all time, OF ALL TIME!!!!

    • Rush

The title is “Watch the Throne”. He was going to title it “Dibs on the Bathroom.”

  • Holly

I don’t agree with Kanye, I mean people hate him a lot, but not quite as much as Hitler. Maybe more like Sadam Hussein, or Tom Cruise. It is hard to compare though.

    • KC

Maybe if he didn’t act like such an egotistical tw@t and realize just how overrated he is, people might give him their spare change.

    • e.e.

More like lice, actually – fairly harmless but annoying as hell.

    • Holla

Holly shut your f$$$ a$$ Kanye is right you need to go get f$$$ and quit hatin you c$&@

  • Chris Perez

    Stooopid Monkey!

  • Dave

If he maybe stops acting like a jerk, no one will hate him. GASP! Logic! I mean, the dude’s music is pretty good, it’s his personality….

  • Chris Perez

    Stooopid Mon key!

  • Hans M.

Seriously, if anyone hated him as much as the man who had millions gased and had millions others slaughtered across Europe, he would have been shot a long time ago. I don’t see people wanting him killed because that was the hate for Hitler. Kanye’s just annoying and not too hard to ignore.

  • K8

The only thing I hate about Kayne is his assumption that we care about him at all

    • M&M

Precisely what I was thinking, K8!

    • Steve

Dude, you just made the best comment about Kanye, ever! Seriously!

    • abadstroller

Hel-LO. Exactly. Ignore KW and his “work”, and he will eventually go away.

    • Bjork’sSwanDress

Like all misunderstood geniuses (myself included), Kanye will not and should not be embraced by everyone, especially K8 and her fellow commenters/fans herein. I can’t say for sure because I’ve only ever met him/her digitally, but K8 strikes me as a rebel leader of sorts, finding a scapegoat for brilliantishness in the form of Kanye. She has many soldiers in her cause, yes, but it seems like K8 and her clan are more interested in extolling the virtues of Tami Taylor than recognizing that they have played right into Kanye’s hand by talking about him at all. By talking about how no one should be talking about Kanye, isn’t K8 talking about Kanye?

      • Sid

Well they were both kinda paranoid, weren’t they?

      • Bjork’sSwanDress

Sid – what on earth are you talking about? i know i don’t have a central nervous system, but i don’t think anything/one that did would be able to figure this out.

    • shelly

AGREE! Much ado about nothing. He just related Hitler to a hated person, and then vompared himsdelf. Probably didn’t take a lot of thinking, just came out of his mouth. The press makes much too much of Kanye and his foolishness. Just ignore him, and maybe he’ll go away.

      • Billy

I hate it when people vompare demsdelfs. :)

    • Stef

EXACTLY. His self-importance has inflated his ego way too much. Maybe one day he’ll realize that most people don’t think about him at all.

    • Lola

    • me

Perfect response, K8. You hit the nail on the head….too bad you can’t hit Kayne too…

      • Nshi

        That is racist.

  • Lisa

Lucky for Kanye, LaBraun pissed everyone off this year…Well that is until he says crap like this.

  • Cris

“… and for all the media, can you lighten up on all your artists that are still here? But keep listening to me as I continue to rant and say obnoxious things so you can print them so I can then complain about how you hate on me.”

    • Ap

Hate to break it to you but entertainers and athletes have been saying things like this for years. It’s the warped media that we live in now that tries to find a story out of anything.

I dont “hate” Kanye… But I think he is a totally classless human being that will only ever love himself.

I’d give him a nasty look if I ever saw him walking down the street, too.
…If I saw Hitler walking the street, I’d smack him with a lead pipe

  • Ap

    Oh Kanye…such a bad hyperbole.

But for someone who hasn’t raped or killed anyone, who’s never had a DUI or drug bust, he is unfairly criticized.

Matter of fact I think his legal record is pretty clean.

If only he were, I so don’t want to go there, but it surely seems like that’s what has happened.

    • hobbes242

I don’t think you can simply base it on a person’s “legal record”. Running up on stage at an awards show and declaring that the person who just won an award is not deserving of it is not illegal. But it will make people dislike you.

      • Ap

I base it on legal record simply because it seems like it’s okay to have a record yet frowned upon for your ego.

I don’t know about you but I’d rather have the ego around than someone with a questionable legal. (I’m looking at you Sheen.)

  • Alex

Kanye, first of all this is just another example of your inflated ego flaring up once more. comparing yourself to Hitler, really?

and you are baffled as to why people look at you like your’e crazy and don’t like you. NEWSFLASH it’s because you make yourself completely and utterly unlikeable SO much of the time. if he actually tried to be a better person I think people would respect him as both an artist and a person.

  • lettergirl

dude, we don’t like you because you’re a massive tool. stop being a d-bag and your likeability factor will go thru the roof. i don’t care how catchy or good his music is, i can’t stand the sight (or sound) of him. blech…just go away (and take that annoying lady gaga with you. i get it–you’re an artiste and you are ‘edgy’. whatever…).

  • Rusty

I LOVE Kanye West. I think he is the funniest person on the pop culture landscape. I mean who has created the most ridiculously hilarious water cooler moments in the past seven years? Nothing he’s ever done has really been *that* bad. He’s not peeing on under aged girls or molesting kids or throwing items at service workers. He just goes off script every now and then and it annoys people. The worst thing he ever did was prevent a gorgeous, twenty-year-old millionaire from making an acceptance speech for a meaningless award of which she’ll have a dozen before her career ends (I know what he did was rude, but really, how sorry for her are we supposed to feel?) People really do seem to make Way too much over the admittedly stupid stuff he does/says. He’s completely harmless and seems like a decent guy underneath his issues. Being a bit unhinged often times goes along with being a great artist. So Kanye is my boy and even though he does/says dumb sh*t, I still love him.

    • CB

Do you even know who Hitler was?

      • Rusty

Yes, I do. What is your point?

    • boocat

You have your taste in your mouth…

    • asher

@Rusty – I can definitely see where you are coming from, you have a good sense of humor about it all!

    • Jay

@Rusty: If you think the Taylor Swift incident is “the worst thing he ever did”, you are tryly ignorant and have no right sticking up for him

      • Dort

I’m still p1ssed that he embarrassed Mike Myers during the Katrina telethon. He just makes me cringe.

      • Rusty

Yeah, that’s a great fleshed out argument there, Jay. I still have no idea what he’s done that’s been *so* bad. I guess he’s done worse things because you say he does. Well, that’s great. Thanks for that.

And Dort, I think that Mike Myers incident was one of Kanye’s funniest moments. In this age of overly coached PR nonsense, Myers response was a real true moment of humanness that is very rare these days. It was classic and hilarious. And I think Mike Meyers survived the embarrassment just fine.

  • hobbes242

It’s hilarious that he even manages to be arrogant about how hated he is.
