Gavin DeGraw released from hospital, but events that led to singer's assault still a mystery

According to his publicist, Gavin DeGraw has been officially discharged, and though he seems to have escaped an attack by multiple assailants with only minor injuries, police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened that led up to DeGraw’s trip to New York’s Bellvue Hospital in the wee hours of Monday morning.

According to police sources, DeGraw’s account of the evening is pretty hazy, but it appears as though he got into some kind of verbal argument with a group of people around four a.m., and the argument escalated into violence.

Dazed, DeGraw somehow walked nearly a mile (from 6th Street to 19th Street) and was lightly clipped by a cab before somebody saw him and dialed 911. The person who called DeGraw an ambulance said that his shirt was bloody and that he appeared to be intoxicated (DeGraw was spotted earlier in the evening at an East Village bar called the National Underground, which he co-owns with his brother).

There have been steady updates from the DeGraw camp about his condition, and the singer did tweet about the incident: “Hi my friends. Honestly, I don’t remember much,” he wrote. “I only know I can recover from here. Thank u all for your genuine concern. I love u guys.”

Police haven’t made any arrests, though they believe they are looking for three men and hope that security footage may give them more leads, since DeGraw could not accurately describe any of his assailants. They are also trying to get to the bottom of how the confrontation started in the first place.

DeGraw has been on the road with Maroon 5 and Train for most of the summer has a new album, Sweeter, that is scheduled to come out on September 20.

      never heard of him before

Anybody proof “reed” that headline??? The verb you’re groping for is “led” not “lead” which is the stuff you find in pencils.

Probably out trolling for boys. Like Kevin Spacey was when he got robbed.

Wow, assume much? You don’t even have a clue, but you already know what happened.

    • hello

He apparently was leaving the bar he co-owns. That’s why he was in that part of town. If he was intoxicated he could have run his mouth, said something he shouldn’t have and got beat down for it. I could see if he was in a typical area where the male prostitutes work like Kevin was, but he wasn’t.

There is, actually, an adult bookstore on First Avenue, between Fifth and Sixth Streets…

      • hello

He wasn’t beat down in a gay adult bookstore by a bunch of male prostitutes, so unless they find the men and they say he came on to them, I’m not going to jump to conclusions.

I’ve always been a big Gavin DeGraw fan. He is a talented singer/songwriter who stays true to his music without being too studio-glossy, for lack of a better phrase. He is an amazing live performer, unlike other over-produced musical “talents.” That may be why some of you have never heard of him. Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

If people would stop getting drunk there’d be a lot less incidents like this. (fights, accidents, etc.) But without people getting liquored up there’d be a lot less need for court systems.

The hospital is spelled Bellevue not Bellvue.
