Doctors have ordered Gregg Allman, the Southern rock legend and frontman of the Allman Brothers Band, to cancel a series of upcoming tour dates because of a respiratory infection.
He will require several days of hospitalization and four to six weeks of bed rest, so the 13 dates scheduled between August 26 and September 15 have been called off. Allman will still play the famous Sturgis Rally in South Dakota tonight, and he hopes to make up the canceled dates later in the year.
This is the latest in a long line of health-related issues for the 63-year-old Allman, who has Hepatitis C and is still recovering from a liver transplant he received last year. He had already canceled a series of shows in Europe back in June thanks to the same respiratory ailment. “His doctor hoped that with rest he’d get better, but unfortunately the issue has persisted,” Allman’s publicist said in a statement released yesterday. “Treatment is going to involve several days of hospitalization and 4-6 weeks of bed rest at home.”
Get well soon, Gregg! The man who wrote “Midnight Rider” deserves a little rest anyway. And hey—it will give you time to work on that undoubtedly-wild memoir.

Just saw Gregg at Buffalo Chip SD outside of Sturgis. He sounded wonderfu! Had no idea he wasn’t well. I got tears when he sang “These Days” . His voice is rich and melodic as ever!!! If any of his people read this: o brought my album “Laid Back” which I purchase in 1974 when I was 14 yrs. Old hoping to have him sign it, but couldn’t get through…. All the way from California this multi-colored lady is in the Denver airport goin’ back home and taking my unsigned album with me. Get better Gregg!!! And I will check you out we are ever in the same town together again!!! Love you!
I know what you mean about “These Days”. Got my picture taken with him and my Laid Back album signed in Huntsville Al. in 2005. Loifetime dream comes true!!!!!
Is this respiratory illness in any way related to the Hep C? I too have this disease so I send to you Gregg my very best wishes for recovery. I absolutely LOVE your music and have since the early 1970′s.
Hope you get well soon. We will miss you in New York this year.
