Latin heartthrob Ricky Martin sold more than 60 million albums during his run at the top of the charts in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with hits such as “Living La Vida Loca,” “She Bangs,” and “La Copa de la Vida.”
Through it all, though, he was hiding a big secret about his sexuality that didn’t come out until much later.
Martin has done VH1′s Behind the Music once before, but he returns for a second round to discuss his amazing success and, yes, the latest beat in his career and life — his coming out as a gay man — in an episode, Behind the Music: Ricky Martin, that airs on the cable network this Sunday, Aug. 14, at 10 p.m. EW has the exclusive preview clip from the hour-long episode.
“I was trying to believe so hard from the bottom of my heart that I was not gay because what I was presenting on stage was not that,” Martin candidly says in the clip, which you can find below. “So it was very confusing.” He goes on to discuss his relationships with men — and women! — while he was a rising star in the ’90s.

Huh, no rude, bigoted or irrelevant – except mine of course;o) – comments from the sheeple yet???
Everyone knew he was gay from the beginning. H ell, even Barbara Walters called him a f@g to his face.
Please remove your homophobic comment.
Barbara Walters is a c*nt.
Way to go Barbara!

Being in Menudo is his only affront to humanity.
Give me a break, Mr. I’m-So-Cool. Menudo was just five kids singing pop songs. There’s no crime here.
He was wonderful in Menudo. That one big start really took his career to better places.
Watching that clip, all I could think was, “Damn, he’s aged well.” Gay, straight, whatever – he’s smokin’.
I have been inspired by his vocalizing his truth. Every person who is successful and widely known who “comes out” is helping hundreds of millions of people who are gay all over the world. I appreciate him a lot even though I’ve never been a huge fan of his music.
Musica + Alma + Sexo Tour concerts are fantastic.
Ricky RULES!!!
My wonderful husband took me to vegas and surprised me with a ricky martin concert at Caesar’s Palace. It was AMAZING! I screamed for two hours he was so good!
Still love you Ricky … no matter what!
Only people with faulty gaydar didn’t know. Same goes for Adam L and Clay A.. Who cares? It’s not like the masses of people who bought his music had any chance with him anyway. I don’t understand homophobes. If the person is enetertaining, enjoy them. What’s the problem?
I’m halfway through Ricky Martin’s book, and it’s interesting to read what he says about his struggles with his identity. You can go on about “gaydar” all you want, but we’re still talking about an individual who was raised Catholic and taught from a young age that being gay was a terrible sin. Selling a few million records doesn’t make that kind of indoctrination any easier to overcome. In fact, fame can create some nasty paranoia. People need to be allowed to come out in their own time and on their own terms. It took a long time, but Ricky Martin was finally able to do that, which is probably why he is happy now.
Your post reinforces my stand against organized religion particularly Roman Catholicism. Brain washing the masses while covering up their own perversions.
@Templar: I totally agree.
Gay or straight? Does it matter? Ricky has a beautiful voice, a smokin’ body and seems like has finally achieved the life he has longed for. A 2 beatiful babies!
We love you Ricky Martin for ever & ever!
