The death toll in Saturday’s tragic stage collapse at the Indiana State Fairgrounds has risen to five, according to a State Fair spokesman. The accident occurred before country duo Sugarland was set to take the stage for their headline performance. An announcer had reportedly just warned the crowd of the advancing storm and gave instructions on what to do in event of an evacuation when a fierce wind kicked up causing the enormous rigging above the stage, which included lights, scaffolding, and sound equipment, to come crashing to the ground.
In addition to the five confirmed fatalities, hospitals on Sunday morning were treating the 40 or so people, including three children, who were injured in the accident.
State Fair officials have canceled all events scheduled for Sunday.
Indiana State Police are expected to hold a press conference some time later this morning.

Seeing all the dirt in the air & how wildly people’s clothes were blowing around in the video it’s shameful that concert was allowed to go on.
Thoughts and prayers for those that died and the injured. The weather can be very unpredictable in the midwest – we get fast changes in our weather as well. No one could have predicted this. The previous commentor on the weather just doesn’t understand. We can all say things like that in hindsight
like they always say, if you don’t like the weather in indiana, wait 10 minutes and it will change…

The weather changed very quickly. That wind seemed to come out of nowhere. I was about 10 miles away from the fairgrounds. Suddenly there were dirt devils about 40-50 ft tall forming in a parking lot when there had barely been any wind, just moments before. I have lived here 3 yrs and I have never seen anything like that happen.

I live in Michigan. The weather is unpredictable. And I read that that very afternoon it was sunny and dry. They were expecting bad weather, but not until later. Fortunate that it happened between performances, because not only would those on stage be in danger, but there probably would have been quite a few more people near the stage in the crowd. This is very sad and unfortunate.
I’m from Indianapolis…the weather was perfect Saturday afternoon until at least 6:30pm. The wind gust came out of nowhere – at least 30 minutes ahead of the storm.
My prayers go out to the families of those who passed away and to those who were injured.
Talk about bringing the house down…one killer show!
