Happy 53rd birthday, Madonna! You're still our lucky star

Fifty-three years ago today in Bay City, Michigan, one crazy little Ciccone roller was born. (and yes, it was—no joke!—a Saturday.)

Today we salute the woman she’s become: a superstar whose single name is so well known across the globe, it nearly subsumes, you know, that other one; a vanguard of pop and power and general cultural next-leveldom whose thighs still look like a 19-year-old Romanian gymnast’s, and whose boyfriend is, in fact, a 19-year-old Frenchman. (Just kidding, pervs; he’s a wise and seasoned 24.)

So let’s watch some classic pre-fame Madge to celebrate. Here she is, auditioning for Fame in 1982:

Happy Birthday Madonna. A great singer/songwriter. Her only real failure-her movie career which was terrible most of the time.

That would change as her new movie W.E. is coming out this fall and the buzz is awesome! She may not turn out to be a great movie star but a movie director perhaps!

Since it’s her birthday I’d like to take a second to thank Madonna soooooooo very much for NOT appearing in any movies over the past few years, it’s like a birthday gift to movie fans every day of the year, a thousand times thank you!

I think my favorite moment is a special where Kurt Loder visited her while filmin the video for Take A Bow. I always thought she looked so beautiful, glamorous and confident. Probably my fave style moment for her too.

Love Madonna, but come on, EW. This isn’t new footage. VH1 played it over a decade ago for Before They Were Stars.

It’s funny because she’s almost decent here, but it’s like she’s more relaxed. I’ve watched her in movies where she didn’t do this good a job. Oh, well, failed actress but huge successful pop star. She still gets the last laugh and will no doubt be worth a billion dollars in her lifetime.

I’ve been in love with Madonna since I was 11, and I’ve seen her live in concert four times. It was 1987 when I first discovered her True Blue album (on vinyl) in my mother’s collection. I have way too many great Madonna memories to count. But if I had to pick a favorite, mine might be different from a lot of other people’s: even though I was 27 when she performed “Hollywood” at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, I can still remember the heart-thumping excitement I felt at seeing her. That whole kissing-Britney-and-Christina thing was something else; I’m just talking about Madonna’s entrance. Even during a comparatively pretty deep lull in her career, even so many years after she burst onto the scene, all Madonna had to do was just stand there and her entrance was electrifying.

Watching her performance with Britney, Christina, and Missy Elliott at the 2003 VMA’s. It was epic and arguably the greatesyt of all time! Perfectly executed. Also, her “Hung Up” music video.

I’ll just say this–every August 16th for the past 10-15 years or so on Madonna’s birthday, I pull out one of her albums and play it. I just pulled out the Celebration CD that came out in 2009, both the double CD and the single CD versions. I actually listened to some of her songs during a road trip on I-95 in Georgia in August 2008–her songs from her 1986 True Blue album still hold up to this day! And even her underperforming albums like Hard Candy actually sound better and fresh years later than the year I first heard it. I remember the 24-hour Madonnathon day that MTV did in August 1990–a remarkable mix of her videos, concert videos and that interview she did with Kurt Loder. I saw some of the hours, but it was very well done. I loved her first album of 1983- great dance music! As well as her later albums. Didn’t like American Life from 2003. For her to have over 50 hits in her career and still get airplay on radio, she is still a true pop icon.
