Hey Linda Perry—what’s going on?
The former 1 Non-Blonde turned pop hitmaker (Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Pink’s “Get the Party Started”) had some unkind words for Katy Perry (no relation; if they were, how awkward would that family reunion picnic be?).
“Who wants a f—ing Katy Perry record? I’m sorry. You’re gonna get the two songs that are probably the hits that are good, but the rest of the album is gonna be crap. It is, it’s gonna sound like s—,” Linda told journalist Heath Daniels earlier this week.
And then, of course, she backtracked… sort of. Watch the video here, and find out why she’s also not exactly nuts about Adele:
Do you agree, readers? Or do you live for microwave popcorn?

She’s probably just mad about people constantly asking her if she’s Katy Perry’s grandmother.
I’m sure the same could be said of some of Linda Perry’s albums. One (if there is one) or two hits, and the rest of the songs are crap. That’s true for most Top 40 bands and artists. It’s rare to find a complete, beginning to end masterpiece of an album.
she said the f word about Katy Perry?
wow
That is one bad picture of Steven Tyler.
Linda Perry is telling the TRUTH. Hopefully Katy Perry can find her inner classic album in the future… *Prince side eye*
Relative to what?
Art is totally subjective.
Her whole point-of-view makes no sense.
Apples are better than oranges?
Prove it.
Linda who – just making a name for herself in the public when no one knows who she is. It may be easier for her to join the D-list and get relevant.
Katy – not a brain surgeon. Is just the new thing and does not need the hate. She will get enough when she is old like linda
She’s right. Katy’s singles are undeniably catchy, but ultimately not very substantial…
It’s terrible music but it’s definitely catchy. Everything is too calculated with her career from her faux-marriage to her cookie-cutter music.
I’m actually surprised some sort of Mentally-Challenged Rights Group didn’t create an uproar over that TGIF video. It sounds like she’ s mocking somebody with an impression of somebody mentally-challenged instead of trying to talk with head gear on.
Does a good pop single need to be substantial?
I hope you don’t mean Firework. She sounds like a dog yelping.
“And so I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed
Just to get it all out, what’s in my cracked out head
And I, I’ve been feeling a little constipated
And so I wake in the morning and I try to take
a dump and I take deep breath
while I’m get real high
And I scream to the top of my lungs
What’s f goin’ on with these kids?”
No, just pop songs in general.
It’s supposed to be fun, peppy music. And that’s exactly what it is.
I have to respectfully disagree–I love guilty pleasure pop music — Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga (first album mainly), Britney and Avril on occasion….. but I just cannot get into Katy Perry. At. All. I think she is horrible. I haven’t liked a single song of hers, ever.
Linda Perry is certainly no Patti Smith, but I’ve gotta take her side in this one.
Good songwriter, great one hit wonder, but bad judge of Katy Perry. Teenage Dream is actually a pretty fun, rather good album. The thing is, you know when you’re buying it, it’s a Katy Perry album. I’m not looking for musical genius. I’m look for pop fun.
Exactly and I actually quite like it. My favourite song on the album is actually Humingbird Heartbeat which was never released.
It is a fun pop album. There are 6 or 7 good songs on the album if your looking for fun disposable pop songs that make you wanna dance and sing along in the car. She’s had 5 number ones off this album and she’s definitely got one more left if she wants to release it. And anyway there is nothing wrong with being a “singles” artist in the digital age.
She is so right! Love her analogy that KP’s music is like microwave popcorn
So does that mean Linda Perry is old, stale popcorn?
Nope. She’s movie theater popcorn. Greasy, stale, and usually found on the floor.
I didn’t realize she wrote that JLo single.
Good one, Skye!
I want to like Skye’s comment.
Katy Perry is the reason why music sucks today.
No. American Idol and all the other music shows are why it sucks today. They are just saturating it with all the same S__T!
We were talking about this earlier today only about books. Books these days are crap because the publishers just need to flood the market with something, anything. It’s the same with music. In the rare event that an actual artist shows up it’s usually hushed up so you don’t realize that everything else the industry is feeding you is absolute garbage.
Is she upset still because people didn’t take to her like she was god’s gift to music?
I vaguely remember her having some similar rant about Madonna back in the day when her ONE hit, What’s Up, got moderate airplay. Her ONE song only became huge after DJ Miko released a remake/remix of it for the clubs.
Hate and envy are horrible human traits, traits she seems to embrace enthusiastically.
Just because she has an opinion on somebody’s music doesn’t make her jealous. I will say though that Pink is just as bad as Katy Perry.
What’s going on?
Why do people keep saying “what’s goin on”??
The song is called “What’s Up”
no offense, Ugh…
What’s up with that?
Cause she says that phrase ad nauseum in her one hit song as a performer.
Hey, yeah, yeah, hey.
cranky senile lesbian… “what the hecks going on?”
Is that tuna I smell?
@ lori…YUP.
Well she does say what’s going on like 9 million times in that track so it’s easy to see why people might be confused. Man do I hate that song.
It’s that song people run away from when it plays. I’ve seen it happen actually.
You know, I love Pink’s “Get the Party Started,” but it’s not any more meaningful or landscape-changing a song than any of Katy Perry’s songs. If anything, Katy’s “I Kissed a Girl,” while not a great song, is more influential than anything Linda Perry has produced, good or great. And people need to lay off Katy and her album. It produced more #1 hits than most albums that are more acclaimed.
That’s the first thing I thought. What is so meaningful about Get This Party Started? Is she commenting on world hunger through an anthem for public drunkeness?
My thoughts exactly. Dont go around calling someone elses music crap when one of your biggest (and only) hits has the line “i’ll be burning rubber you’ll be kissing my ass”. Its not like her music is insanely deep and thought provoking.
Seriously. Get This Party Started is pretty much up the same alley as Last Friday Night lyrically. So what room does this lady have to be talking?
That’s not the only song she’s written. “Beautiful” and “Letter to God”, give those songs a go and then you can talk.
Also, bad news reporting. You don’t exactly find out why she’s not nuts about Adele from watching that video.
She’s absolutely right. Katy Perry’s music is light, fluffy and completely unsatisfying. Some of her songs are entertaining in a air-headed kind of way, but not worth an entire album.
Agreed. And that’s all she’s trying to say. Nothing more, nothing less. People are making it so personal.
It’s a very odd criticism, particularly given what Katy accomplished this week.
I do think it’s fair to call Katy Perry a singles artist–it’s not like there’s a particularly-compelling “story” or artistic direction to the album–but she’s already had FIVE SINGLES that hit NUMBER ONE. And, there are a few other songs on the album (Hummingbird Heartbeat, for instance) that easily could have replaced any of the five number one singles and also done well on the charts.
Having that many good songs on an album makes it worth buying.
That’s a good, fair point. But honestly, who listens to albums anymore? I could listen to all of Katy’s hit singles in a row and enjoy them without caring that they don’t collectively tell a singular story. That’s what pop music is unless you’ve been around long enough and have the vocal talent of a Beyonce. But we wouldn’t ask anything more of Britney Spears, would we? And Katy is more talented than that.
Yepper. Not my type of music, but 4nonblonds disin a cd with 5 #1′s has no merit. Its hard for me to buy that cd when I can turn my radio to any of 4 stations and have a 50% chance of hearing a KP song. There are plenty of cds that are great all the way through but they never get airplay.
She has a right to her opinion but I Want to buy a Katy Perry Album and it’s actually a solid album . Although we do need some substance it’s not cool to be so harsh.
KATY PERRY SHOULD ONLY BE WELL KNOWN FOR ONE THING (WELL, TWO) AND THAT’S HER GREAT LUNGS.
…AND I DON’T MEAN THEM FOR SINGING.
I agree Katy Perry is pop fluff–but her album just tied the record for most #1 singles on an album—so if more than 50% of the songs were number one hits how can you say it only has 1-2 hits and the rest crap?
Well I was listening to her 5 x No.1 hits in the U.S and they are all crap! I mean her voice is actually terrible…. Have you listen closely to ‘Fireworks?” I mean the lyrics are beautiful and so is tune… but her voice uggh! … even the auto tune couldnt help…she is a prime example of a manufactured Pop Star… and sadly it WORKS!! Her previous album ‘ One of the Boys’ stood out to me as an artist, But ‘Teenage Dream’ is just DESPERATE, for attention!!
