Kelly Clarkson on leaked songs: She was 'robbed'

Kelly-Clarkson

In mid-July, Kelly Clarkson returned from a vacation in Tahiti to discover that almost an album’s worth of her songs had leaked onto the Internet. Naturally, she was none too pleased. “Oh my God, have you ever been robbed? I have. I’ve been physically robbed a couple of times, but this is much worse,” Clarkson tells EW exclusively in her first public remarks about the incident.

Clarkson says she has no clue how songs including “Let Me Down,” “Dumb + Dumb = U,” “Cleopatra,” “Don’t Be a Girl About It” ended up online. But once they did, fans, eager for new material from the singer, quickly snatched them up.

Sure, the tunes were well-received, but there was a problem: They were old, and most of them weren’t even meant for her. “There are songs out there that are from eight or 10 years ago [from when Clarkson was recording her first album, Thankful.] … People are always asking me to write for other artists. They’re awesome songs, [but] they’re just not songs I would normally sing.”

The singer was also concerned for her fans — and her image. “Those songs came out and people are like, “Oh my God, what direction is Kelly going?” she says. “I think what made me mad was that: 1) People stole from me, and 2): Everybody had no idea what my next album was going to sound like. That really caused a lot of confusion.”

A couple of the leaked tunes (Clarkson won’t say which ones) will make it on to her fifth studio album, Stronger, which is schedule to drop Oct. 25. (Her lead single, “Mr. Know It All,” is scheduled to be released in early September.) “Here’s the best part though,” she promises fans. “Nothing that’s leaked is the final version. Those are all demos.”

So while she’s excited for her next album, she admits that even she hasn’t heard the final version of the release. “I don’t even have it, by the way, because I’m so freaked out to put it on my computer,” she says.

For more from Clarkson, including some scoop on Stronger, pick up the Sept. 2 issue of Entertainment Weekly on newsstands Friday.

It is impossible to fall out of love. Love is such a powerful emotion, that once it envelops you it does not depart. True love is eternal. If you think that you were once in love, but fell out of it, then it wasn’t love you were in. There are no ‘exit’ signs in love, there is only an ‘on’ ramp. (( H_o_t_B_l_a_c_k_w_h_i_t_e. c_0_m )) Lots of my friends found their lovers through the se’rvice. You may have a try… ;)

What if you were in Kelly’s position @Amanda? If you were an artist and someone hacked into your computer and leaked unreleased songs you wouldn’t like it.

      • I used to really like Kelly

until she turned into whiny, whiny, wah wah wah. She’s so far removed from the cheerful, fun girl who everyone loved on AI. She seems so jaded now.

      • @ I used to

You are a moron who probably has nothing of value to steal, including your identity.

      • tom

That’s why I would probably consider this to be some kind of freak accident lol

    • AK

Yes, how terrible that an artist is upset about having their work stolen.

      • tania

I agree no one wants anything stolen from them, Kelly should be upset that her songs got stolen and put on the internet.

    • Sara

      Sara,

Just wait for your identity to be stolen over the internet, then you’ll be crying a HUGE river. Wait a minute, I don’t think anyone would want to be you based on your dumba$$ post. Actually, maybe you need to be concerned since this happens to not only the smartest but the dumbest.

      • Wha’ever

… are you talking to yourself… ? You meant Amanda, right ?

      • tania

        Sara I agree with you 100 %

      • This has to be

one of the unintentionally funniest posts on EW.com.

      • cafe101

what kind of sickos steal crappy music and share it with the entire world like this? they must not speak english or whatever

      • Sassy

cafe 101 STFU. Kelly’s music is amazing. It is her music and nobody has the right to steal it from her. You seem tone deaf. You should see a doctor.

    • ann p

wow amanda hate much. so shes is still naive, to most people thats a nice thing. god said to cherish the meek, which is a good idea whether you are christian or not. so hate on

      • J.P.

        She’s an uneducated wench.

      • J.P.

Amanda is the wench, not Kelly. We like Kelly.

    • ames

well, it she would stop saying “my album is coming out in…”, only to have every album come out 6-12 months AFTER she said it would, maybe folks wouldn’t be so anxious!

      • Sassy

I think Kelly agrees with you, but she does not make those kinds of business decisions. It is a crazy complicated business. Ups and downs, kill or be killed type of biz. Some things I am sure are out of her control. I think she is doing pretty well in a screwed up biz.

    • Sassy

Can you please drown in that river Amanda? You are an ignorant jerk. It is Kelly’s music/work, and she has every right to be mad that someone stole from her!!!!

  • Dee

Have I ever been robbed while on vacation in TAHITI? No, I can honestly say I have not.

    • cafe101

Who knows, she probably got ripped on vacation and thought she was uploading some digital photos to flickr or whatever

  • John

    Well, aren’t you lucky.

  • Pie Thrower

Was one of these songs played on the world’s smallest violin?

    • 4120

Die in a fire Pie Thrower. Stupid B*tch.

      • Marilyn

    • Sassy

Shut up Pie Thrower. You are not funny and a real jackass. I hope someone steals your sh*t someday. Please let us all know about it so we can laugh at you.

  • Mike

You do realize that she was asked the questions and didn’t volunteer the information herself, right?

    • Mike

Intended as a response to the ridiculous violin comment.

  • Chase

actually, most of the leaked songs this year were leftovers from albums. Songs she has talked about, like Getaway from the Breakaway era, her friend Jessica told us about that one, and then she mentioned it on the Yahoo! concert for My December. The My December leftovers were ones the producer himself mentioned. Like Too Much and Racehorse.

  • …..

    Love her.

  • Chase

@amanda, @Pie Thrower, are you thick? When you records songs for a living and a record company counts on your records to sell in order to make money in order to continue to produce music, premature song leaks are actually kind of a big deal. So yeah, I think she has every right to feel robbed and complain a bit.

  • Danny

I can’t imagine what it must be like to have unfinished work stolen and handed out for anyone to hear. What vulnerable, no-win situation to be in. Kelly’s handled it well. I’m glad to hear that in spite of all this, the album is finally moving forward and that not all of the leaked tracks have been scrapped. Can’t wait.

  • TQB

You know, Kelly could sit back, record crappy pop songs and be a rich woman. Instead she cares passionately – even obsessively – about her songs. We’ve seen this before – such as when “Already Gone” was released with the same score as Beyonce’s “Halo.” It’s this kind of passion that makes her a cut above the average pop star. If you care about your work, of course you’re going to feel robbed and mad to have anything less than your best product out there.

    • Ted

I agree with you TQB. I wouldn’t want that to happen to me or anyone else. Thanks for your comment. Love Kelly!!

    • Sassy

Well said Chase, Danny, and TQB. At least there are some human beings on here and not a bunch of uncaring unempathetic douchebags. Love Kelly Clarkson. She is a very special person with a heart of gold and amazing killer pipes!

  • Chase

oh my someone has my name here!!!

I cant wait for new official final recordings. What Doesnt Kill You will probably make the new record. It repeats the line “stronger” over and over

    • dee

When Gossip Girl finishes are you going to come out of the closet?

      • umm

        That’s Chace actually-nice try though

  • Ben

I hope she gets a cover story in the next issue!

    • Hermione

      DAMN STRAIGHT!

    • Kelcie

WOW. I can’t believe it’s been 8/10 years since Thankful. She’s been out a long time! Glad she’s still making music.

  • Chase

The problem with leaks is that its gonna happen… we’re in a digital age and if you dont want your stuff getting out, lock it down. Jay-Z just prevented his album from leaking by using fingerprint technology, no emails, producers not keeping any of the material. Someone will always get their hands on stuff and leak it nowadays.

  • Hermione

I f*cking love Kelly Clarkson and I feel like we haven’t had any new stuff from her in FOREVER. I appreciate the amount of care she takes before releasing a new CD though, instead of just churning out radio hits just to make money. CAN NOT wait for her new album.

  • annechantal

Some guy named Kal Frisinger from WI and Fernanda Barros from some other foreign country were the original leakers of the songs, along with people from the Kelly Clarkson Express.

    • @annechantal

Seriously, what’s your beef with Kelly? Anytime there’s a leak, you’re the first one to comment or post….pot, meet kettle.

      • swimmer

Annechantal is just a sick psycho b**ch

      • Jake

        exactly!

    • swimmer

Yes, some dude from Germany hacked into Kelly’s computer and leaked her songs but the nobody from the KC Express leaked those songs.

      • Chase

yep. Last years batch of leaks that included Cleopatra were hackers, who nailed many many pop stars and sold the songs. They have been caught and punished.

      • Chase

The KC Express is not even ALLOWED to post links on the board. Whoever shares whatever outside the forum is their business. LOTS of people shared the songs that dont even know about the Kelly Express

      • LMFAO

        Try a salad, fatty.

    • Lisa

      @annechantal:

Every. single. time. you open your mouth or put fingers to keyboard, you are uttering a lie.

Yes, there was a German hacker who was caught and taken care of …. but NO ONE from the Kelly Clarkson Express has willingly traded/sold/bought unreleased tracks of hers. And to point fingers at them, including Fernanda, is absolute insanity.

When you’re pointing that finger, you should be looking in the mirror.

    • Bianca

      LIES.

    • S

Who are you? I see you all over everything about Kelly Clarkson. I think you have been doing harm to her. Please leave her alone. She has enough to deal with in her line of business w/o you messing with her.
