George Michael is experiencing a different kind of “Freedom.” On Monday, the singer took the stage at Prague State Opera, where he promptly announced he had broken up with his longtime partner, Kenny Goss. In fact, they had split long ago — Michael announced that he and Goss had not been together in over two years. “My battles with substances are well-documented and my partner went through similar problems with drink,” he told the crowd before singing “Where I Hope You Are.” “The truth is my love life has been a lot more turbulent than I have let on. This is probably the first break-up song I’ve written.”
The performance was Michael’s first on his “Symphonica” tour. He has not toured since serving jail time last year for driving under the influence. During the show, he also tipped his hat to another singer who struggled with substance abuse — Michael nearly teared up singing a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Love is a Losing Game.”
That’s unfortunate but – while I enjoy George’s music and probably always will – the lack of respect he showed to his partner over the years in such a public way, made this fairly inevitable. I’m sure there was more going on behind closed doors on both sides, but the surprise here is not that it happened, but that it lasted as long as it did. Hopefully, both have learned and will take those lessons forward in life.
Mike, I get what you’re saying, but the public have no idea what kind of arrangement they had in their relationship. They might have had an open marriage – it’s more common than you’d think. The small issue I have with this story is why he told the crowd his ex-partner had an issue with substances.
Rob – just from what we’ve seen, I suspect they did have an open relationship. What I question is whether they had an open PUBLIC relationship. It’s one thing to have the arrangement between the two – it’s another when it’s out in the open for all to see because one of them keeps getting caught with his pants down. I can only imagine if they had an open relationship, it was probably supposed to be discreet. Then again, I just said ‘imagine’…
Yeah, there was no reason for him to mention that his partner had alcohol problems. That was pretty beyotchy of him to bring up. Especially at a concert, presumably in front of thousands of people.
There’s no such thing as an “open marriage/relationship. It’s just plain retartded to say you’re in a relationship with somebody and then agree to see other people. You’re just looking for trouble.
I’m not saying this applies to all, but the gay guys that I know are very promiscuous. I know one guy that cruises on a daily bases. I’m still trying to figure out why he does this given the fact that AIDs is still out there.

that have no place in reporting: nearly, almost, could, maybe, and might. Reporting that George Michael “nearly teared up” is exactly the same as reporting George Michael did not tear up. He either DID, or he DID NOT. I realize that news has to come from somewhere—but real journalists don’t try to squeeze it from turnips.

I’ve always enjoyed George Michael’s music, but, don’t really understand why he felt the need to announce something so personal at a concert. I think celebrities should keep their private life private! Glad to hear that he’s cleaned up his life though.
I think part of the reason is that he was singing a song inspired by those events in his life. I think recognizing one’s shortcomings are a great lesson for others.
Um.. What do you think these singers/musicians sing about? Other peoples’ personal lives?
