Jay-Z and Kanye West making surprise VMA performance? They probably should have advertised that

Considering he has made the show so memorable in the past two years, and he also has an extremely high-profile album out and a tour to promote, it seemed a little bit strange that Kanye West’s name wasn’t on the guest list for tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. But according to one report, West will be making a surprise appearance on stage with his Watch the Throne tag-team partner Jay-Z for a performance.

According to E!, the duo’s appearance has been kept deep under wraps (their seat-saving placards were missing during rehearsals this week), and according to those connected to the show, the slot was still up in the air (though some speculated that they could end up closing the show).

Rumors are also running around the Nokia Theater at L.A. Live that they could also be teaming up with Beyoncé, who is featured on “Liftoff,” one of Watch the Throne‘s finest, most pop-friendly moments.

This is good news for the VMAs, which was lacking some punch on stage. Lady Gaga should provide a headline-worthy opening performance, but after that MTV still has about 110 minutes to fill.

There are plenty of other rumors spinning around the VMAs, including surprise performances by Justin Bieber and Bad Meets Evil (aka Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″), though neither of those concepts seem to have any weight to them.

Here’s the big question: If Jay-Z and Kanye West were going to show up and perform on the show, why wouldn’t MTV advertise that? Considering the lack of buzz surrounding the show (partially due to the fact that they haven’t had a host to promote it), it would seem like Jay and West’s appearance would get some eyeballs on the TV screens. Surprises are nice, but so is knowing you’re not going to be wasting two hours.

Who cares. MTV was once a music channel. Time to end the VMA’s and turn it into a reality channel..smh.

I got an iPad 2-(32GB)  for $ 23.87 and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $ 38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $ 657 which only cost me $ 62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, shr.tn/6Kd8

Adele is overrated. All she did was sit in a chair and she won for best artistic video? BS. Gaga deserved it more..BTW,I wanna share a good news to you.My best friend ,she just has announced her wedding with a millionaire man who is a celebrity !they met via

you can’t get any buzzworthy than Adele. she’s going to blow off the roof.

Definitely! And not a fame whore like the others. Just a great talent.

Put Jay-Z and Kanye in a cage with Taylor Swift, I’ll watch.

MTV’s way of advertising it is by leaking the surprise and having outlets like EW write articles about their “surprise” appearance. A seemingly unexpected appearance might be a better way to create buzz than if it appears planned.

Nobody is really going to watch this year. It’s a really weak lineup as far as new music goes. Adele is really the only reason why people are going to watch, and you can catch it on youtube now, so you don’t have to watch the rest of that promotion stuff.

Adele, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, & the other performers can entertain us too. It’s not a one-man freak show. Lady Gaga’s a good performer, but so are the others.

I’m actually far more excited for this year’s VMAs than last year, and I was excited about Chelsea Handler hosting. I think the no-host idea is smart, it leaves more room for performances and “surprises.” Most of the performers last year seemed to be phoning it in, hopefully tonight recaptures the energy of 2009… Aaand beyond Lady Gaga, there are some killer performers; I love how EW is acting like Gaga is the only worthwhile act – Adele, Beyonce, the Britney tribute, the Amy Winehouse memorial…

They really should have Odd Future perform and not just present…that would cause quite a stir.

Literally the entire performance would be censored, what is the point? Also, that Kanye/Jay-Z song is the worst on the album, I don’t see why they should play that.

Funny what we call a surprise. I’m only watching the show to see Adele and for the Amy Winehouse tribute.
Don’t know why this article makes it seem like Lady Gaga is the only worthwhile thing. She’s not that special or interesting.

Thanks for the warning. Now I can do something a lot more exciting than watching a has-been and a hack attempt to talk in rhyme over stolen music. Anyone want to join me in cleaning the underside of my tables?

I think not advertising it will make the peformance exciting. I think Jay-Z will perform on stage, then Kanye will come from the audience right to the stage! People are waiting for this performance just as much as Lady Gaga, Adele and others. I don’t think they packed enough artists to perform for that show. Would have liked Britney Spears to perform, but she’s getting ready to tour in Europe.

MTV is known to do this on their Video Music Awards saying a special performance without announcing who it is. I remember when Tom Petty performed on the last performance on the 1989 VMA awards and Axl Rose came on stage , no introduction, to sing Free Fallin’ with him! It was out of left field and made their performance exciting and entertaining to watch!

Funny what we call a surprise. Can’t be if you know about it before it happens and then tell everyone so they all know before it happens too. LOL
I caught a commercial for the VMAs and they had all of these people we would see there, but then when it came to performances they only had like 4 names. Who knows what will happen.
